From 492c50caab670b12ab298549b93b630927047c12 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Stanislav Date: Fri, 16 Oct 2026 21:32:52 +0400 Subject: [PATCH 1/2] Keep an unchanged expression on evaluation; set is_uniform on conversion Two changes in mathics/core/expression.py: * Expression.rewrite_apply_eval_step() built a new Expression on every evaluation, even when the head and all elements came back as the very same objects, and renewed the cache of that copy only. An expression kept in a definition (e.g. a list of rules made with Join and kept as an OwnValue) then stayed "uncertain" for good once one of its symbols changed, and was evaluated again on every use. Now `self` is returned, with its cache renewed, when nothing changed. With a 962-rule list like the one of Strickland's Toda.m, every use of the list evaluated all its rules again; this was most of the time of each `expr //. rules`. * convert_expression_elements() set is_uniform from its argument (True by default) and never checked it. Every parsed expression was thus "uniform", and only its first element was searched for upvalues unless an element evaluation happened to rebuild the properties: y /: F[1, y] := 5; F[1, y] (* gave F[1, y]; WMA: 5 *) The first change made this visible in test_assignment.py, so it is fixed here too: is_uniform is now checked as in _build_elements_properties(). For a list of rules kept in a variable and used again and again (`expr //. rules`) compiling took longer than matching. The RewriteRule is now kept on the rule expression with the time it was made, and reused while no symbol of the rule (its attributes, defaults and options included) has changed since.
