What does this PR do?

Type of change: new feature

This PR adds an NVFP4 LSQ QAD recipe that quantizes both the language model and supported visual Linear layers in Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5-VL.

The recipe uses:

  • Static NVFP4 E2M1 weights with tied learnable pre/post scales.
  • Dynamic NVFP4 E2M1 activations.
  • FP8 KV cache.
  • MSE scale initialization with FP8 scale sweep.

The default multimodal exclusions remain in effect, after which the recipe selectively re-enables visual attention and linear_fc weight quantizers plus visual Linear input quantizers. Patch embedding and visual BMM quantizers remain disabled, so non-Linear visual state such as positional embeddings is not accidentally quantized.

The PR also:

  • Requires image calibration when the visual input quantizers are enabled.
  • Exports the trained LSQ post-amax after checkpoint restore.
  • Covers both tied-LSQ and dual-LSQ NVFP4 export semantics.
  • Tests real quantizer selection on tiny Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5-VL models.
  • Adds CUDA calibration and unified Hugging Face export tests for both architectures.

Usage

python examples/hf_ptq/hf_ptq.py \
  --pyt_ckpt_path <local-qwen-vlm-checkpoint> \
  --recipe general/qad/nvfp4_lsq-mse_init-fp8_kv-visual-linear \
  --calib_with_images \
  --export_path <output-directory>

The exported checkpoint contains NVFP4 visual and language Linear weights, dynamic NVFP4 activation metadata, and an FP8 KV-cache configuration. The recipe intentionally rejects text-only calibration because the enabled visual input quantizers require image activations.

Testing

Validated on an NVIDIA H20 with Python 3.12, PyTorch 2.11.0+cu130, and Transformers 5.12.1:

python3 -m pytest -vv -o addopts= \
  tests/gpu/torch/export/test_qwen_vision_recipe_export.py::test_nvfp4_lsq_visual_recipe_calibrates_and_exports \
  tests/unit/recipe/test_qwen_vision_recipe.py::test_nvfp4_lsq_visual_recipe_selects_expected_quantizers \
  tests/examples/hf_ptq/test_hf_ptq_vision_quantization.py::test_vision_recipe_requires_image_calibration \
  tests/unit/recipe/test_lsq_recipes.py \
  tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_nvfp4_static_export_cpu.py

Result: 30 passed.

The GPU tests run calibration and unified Hugging Face export for:

  • Qwen3VLForConditionalGeneration
  • Qwen3_5ForConditionalGeneration

They verify that:

  • Visual attention, MLP, merger, and deep-stack merger Linear scales are exported.
  • Language-model NVFP4 scales and FP8 KV-cache metadata are present.
  • Patch embedding and visual BMM quantizers remain disabled.
  • The checkpoint uses uniform NVFP4 metadata rather than unintended mixed precision.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds an NVFP4 tied-LSQ QAD recipe for Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5-VL visual linear layers. Static LSQ scale extraction uses post-amax values. Tests cover recipe configuration, calibration requirements, scale calculation, and exported checkpoint metadata.

Changes: NVFP4 LSQ visual quantization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and validate visual quantizers
modelopt_recipes/general/qad/nvfp4_lsq-mse_init-fp8_kv-visual-linear.yaml, tests/unit/recipe/test_lsq_recipes.py, tests/unit/recipe/test_qwen_vision_recipe.py, tests/examples/hf_ptq/test_hf_ptq_vision_quantization.py
Adds static NVFP4 weights, dynamic NVFP4 inputs, FP8 KV cache, and visual-module overrides. Tests verify enabled and disabled quantizers, block sizes, precision, and the image-calibration requirement.
Select LSQ static scales
modelopt/torch/quantization/qtensor/nvfp4_tensor.py, tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_nvfp4_static_export_cpu.py
Uses amax_post for LSQ static quantizers and amax otherwise. Regression tests cover tied and untied amax configurations.
Calibrate and validate Qwen exports
tests/gpu/torch/export/test_qwen_vision_recipe_export.py, CHANGELOG.rst
Adds compute-capability-gated Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5-VL export tests. The tests verify NVFP4 configuration, FP8 KV-cache metadata, exported scale tensors, and excluded patch-embedding scales. The changelog documents the recipe.

The recipe and inspected export path appear mergeable, but a small test addition would better protect trained LSQ scales after checkpoint restoration.

Full details: Security Anti-Patterns

Explanation

No security anti-pattern is introduced in the reviewed scope. The only changed package Python file is modelopt/torch/quantization/qtensor/nvfp4_tensor.py; its additions select amax_post or amax and perform float conversion. It adds no torch.load, numpy.load(..., allow_pickle=True), hardcoded trust_remote_code=True, eval/exec, or # nosec. No pyproject.toml or requirements.txt changes add dependencies. The .eval() occurrence is in a test file, not the package or examples scope, and is a module mode call rather than Python eval(). Therefore none of the six stated failure conditions applies.

Exercise restored LSQ parameters before checking export.

The test mutates _amax_post and exports the same quantizer. It does not cover restoration of the learned post-amax value. Save the ModelOpt metadata and tensor state, restore both into a fresh quantizer, and keep the numerical scale assertion on that restored quantizer.
