From 8220f29caa9ab143486dbc83d04ebef75af8a5ee Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: kunal0137 Date: Wed, 7 Oct 2026 02:32:26 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 1/8] Guardrails: generic Jev-backed policy guardrail engine (#11) One engine class evaluates text against a configurable policy criterion by asking a configured Jev (TypeSafe) model engine typed questions and mapping the structured answer to a pass/block verdict. Noul (binary criterion) and choice question types are supported through the same implementation; different policies change configuration only. - SMSS: MODEL_ENGINE_ID, QUESTION_INSTRUCTIONS, optional QUESTION_TYPE, QUESTION_CRITERIA/VIOLATION_CHOICES (choice), VIOLATION_DIRECTION (noul), CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD (inclusive boundary), LOW_CONFIDENCE_ VERDICT (default BLOCK), FAIL_OPEN (default false), BLOCKED_MESSAGE, TIMEOUT_SECONDS; per-call overrides via pipeline directParameters - Structured verdict details distinguish PASS / VIOLATION / INDETERMINATE / ERROR outcomes with criterion, typed answer, confidence vs threshold, and reason - Judge resolution enforces model access (userCanViewEngine) and the judge engine's usage controls run inside evaluate(); recursion into the same guardrail from the judge's own pipeline is detected and blocked per thread, and a guardrail mounted on its judge's pipeline fails immediately - Evaluation errors (missing/unreachable/malformed judge, missing user context, invalid overrides) follow the configured failure policy and block by default - they never become silent passes - Registered as GuardrailTypeEnum.EMBEDDED_JEV_POLICY; docs include two pipeline examples showing two policies from one engine --- src/prerna/engine/api/GuardrailTypeEnum.java | 2 + .../guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java | 965 ++++++++++++++++++ .../JevPolicyGuardrailEngineUnitTests.java | 347 +++++++ 3 files changed, 1314 insertions(+) create mode 100644 src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java create mode 100644 test/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngineUnitTests.java diff --git a/src/prerna/engine/api/GuardrailTypeEnum.java b/src/prerna/engine/api/GuardrailTypeEnum.java index fc4bc420c7..3fd047b46a 100644 --- a/src/prerna/engine/api/GuardrailTypeEnum.java +++ b/src/prerna/engine/api/GuardrailTypeEnum.java @@ -30,6 +30,7 @@ import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.AggressiveSelfHarmGuardrailEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.DetoxifyGuardrailEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.GLiNERGuardrailEngine; +import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.JevPolicyGuardrailEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.LocalPythonGuardrailReactorFunctionEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.OnTopicGuardrailEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.guardrail.PolicyComplianceGuardrailEngine; @@ -41,6 +42,7 @@ public enum GuardrailTypeEnum { EMBEDDED_AGGRESSIVE_SELF_HARM("EMBEDDED_AGGRESSIVE_SELF_HARM", AggressiveSelfHarmGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), EMBEDDED_DETOXIFY("EMBEDDED_DETOXIFY", DetoxifyGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), EMBEDDED_GLINER("EMBEDDED_GLINER", GLiNERGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), + EMBEDDED_JEV_POLICY("EMBEDDED_JEV_POLICY", JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), EMBEDDED_ON_TOPIC("EMBEDDED_ON_TOPIC", OnTopicGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), EMBEDDED_PROMPT_INJECTION("EMBEDDED_PROMPT_INJECTION", PromptInjectionGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), EMBEDDED_POLICY_COMPLIANCE("EMBEDDED_POLICY_COMPLIANCE", PolicyComplianceGuardrailEngine.class.getName()), diff --git a/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java b/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java new file mode 100644 index 0000000000..5f6ff79347 --- /dev/null +++ b/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java @@ -0,0 +1,965 @@ +/******************************************************************************* + * Copyright 2015 Defense Health Agency (DHA) + * + * If your use of this software does not include any GPLv2 components: + * Licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the "License"); + * you may not use this file except in compliance with the License. + * You may obtain a copy of the License at + * + * http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0 + * + * Unless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing, software + * distributed under the License is distributed on an "AS IS" BASIS, + * WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or implied. + * See the License for the specific language governing permissions and + * limitations under the License. + * ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- + * If your use of this software includes any GPLv2 components: + * This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or + * modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License + * as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 + * of the License, or (at your option) any later version. + * + * This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, + * but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of + * MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. The judge model must not run a pipeline that invokes this guardrail. + + ## Example: block a request outside the approved scope + + Save this as `pipeline.json` in the guarded model engine's assets folder, set + `PIPELINE pipeline.json` in that model engine's SMSS, and restart or reload it: + + ```json + { + "pipelines": { + "askRoom": { + "input": [ + { + "reactorClass": "prerna.reactor.interceptor.GenericGuardrailInputReactor", + "params": { + "guardrailEngineId": "%s", + "inputMapping": { + "prompt": "arg0" + }, + "directParameters": { + "questionInstructions": "Is this request within the approved scope: monthly reporting questions only?" + }, + "blockOnGuardrailFailure": true, + "respondWithGuardrailMessage": true, + "blockErrorMessage": "This assistant only answers monthly reporting questions." + } + } + ] + } + } + } + ``` + + A blocked request short-circuits the model call entirely - the guarded model is never + asked, so there is nothing to mask. + + ## Example: block a response that violates the disclosure policy + + ```json + { + "pipelines": { + "askRoom": { + "output": [ + { + "reactorClass": "prerna.reactor.interceptor.GenericGuardrailOutputReactor", + "params": { + "guardrailEngineId": "%s", + "inputMapping": { + "prompt": "result" + }, + "directParameters": { + "questionType": "CHOICE", + "questionCriteria": "{\\"APPROVED\\":\\"answer shares approved figures\\",\\"OFF_PLAN\\":\\"answer mentions figures, dates, or customers not on the approved list\\"}", + "violationChoices": "[\\"OFF_PLAN\\"]" + }, + "blockErrorMessage": "The response did not pass disclosure review." + } + } + ] + } + } + } + ``` + + The output reactor maps the completed model response to `prompt` and withholds the result + when the judge marks it. A violating response is blocked before delivery. Streaming + responses are checked as each message completes; content already delivered to the caller + cannot be recalled, and this engine only protects what the pipeline still holds. + + ## Decision semantics + + - **noul** - the judge returns a violation probability `p` (0-1). `p >= 0.5` answers yes. + The confidence is the distance from the boundary. A violation blocks when the answer + points at the configured `VIOLATION_DIRECTION` and confidence meets + `CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD`, inclusive. + - **choice** - the judge selects a configured choice with a confidence (0-1). Selecting a + `violationChoices` entry is a violation when the confidence meets the threshold, + inclusive. + - **below threshold** - never a silent pass: the configured `LOW_CONFIDENCE_VERDICT` + applies (default `BLOCK`). + + Errors - judge missing, not a TYPESAFE engine, timeout, malformed or missing answers, + invalid overrides - are evaluation errors, not policy violations, and are blocked unless + `FAIL_OPEN`/`failOpen` is explicitly `true`. A guardrail screening arg0 was therefore judging the placeholder. PromptGuardrailEngine.fullPromptText(InputMessage) reads the full_prompt parameter (JSON or list of chat-shaped entries); the last user turn's contents are what an input guardrail screens, falling back to all contents when no user turn exists. GuardrailValueReader.messageText prefers it over the placeholder text part, so all guardrail engines benefit. chat-shaped message maps inside a plain parameter map resolve through extractText as well. 17 Jev + 6 PolicyCompliance unit tests pass. --- .../impl/guardrail/PromptGuardrailEngine.java | 105 +++++++++++++++++- .../interceptor/GuardrailValueReader.java | 11 +- .../JevPolicyGuardrailEngineUnitTests.java | 27 +++++ 3 files changed, 141 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/PromptGuardrailEngine.java b/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/PromptGuardrailEngine.java index a541b85892..0a1148fed8 100644 --- a/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/PromptGuardrailEngine.java +++ b/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/PromptGuardrailEngine.java @@ -39,8 +39,11 @@ import org.apache.logging.log4j.LogManager; import org.apache.logging.log4j.Logger; +import com.google.gson.Gson; + import prerna.engine.api.IModelEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.function.FunctionParameter; +import prerna.engine.impl.model.AbstractModelEngine; import prerna.engine.impl.model.Room; import prerna.engine.impl.model.RoomUtils; import prerna.engine.impl.model.message.InputMessage; @@ -66,6 +69,9 @@ public abstract class PromptGuardrailEngine extends AbstractGuardrailReactorFunc public static final String BLOCKED_MESSAGE_KEY = "BLOCKED_MESSAGE"; public static final String FAIL_OPEN_KEY = "FAIL_OPEN"; + /** Parameter key carrying an explicitly supplied conversation for screening. */ + static final String FULL_PROMPT_PARAM = AbstractModelEngine.FULL_PROMPT; + protected static final String PROMPT_PARAM = "prompt"; private String modelEngineId; @@ -218,7 +224,15 @@ static String extractText(Object rawValue) { return (String) rawValue; } if (rawValue instanceof InputMessage) { - return ((InputMessage) rawValue).getFullInputPrompt(); + InputMessage inputMessage = (InputMessage) rawValue; + // a passthrough route sends the conversation as the full_prompt + // parameter and a placeholder as the message text; screen the + // conversation the engine will actually run, not the placeholder + String fullPromptText = fullPromptText(inputMessage); + if (fullPromptText != null) { + return fullPromptText; + } + return inputMessage.getFullInputPrompt(); } if (rawValue instanceof AbstractModelEngineResponse) { Object response = ((AbstractModelEngineResponse) rawValue).toMap().get("response"); @@ -235,6 +249,10 @@ static String extractText(Object rawValue) { if (body != null || subject != null) { return joinText(Arrays.asList(subject, body)); } + String fullPrompt = chatFullPromptText(valueMap); + if (fullPrompt != null) { + return fullPrompt; + } return extractText(valueMap.get("messages")); } if (rawValue instanceof Collection) { @@ -243,6 +261,91 @@ static String extractText(Object rawValue) { return rawValue.toString(); } + /** + * The conversation a passthrough route sends as the message's full_prompt + * parameter. One engine class covers any policy (prompt-injection +review, request scope, response disclosure, and so on); different policies differ only in +configuration. + +The judge is called through `ITypeSafeEngine.evaluate(state, questions, insight, parameters)` with +a typed `noul` (yes probability) or `choice` question. It is never asked for free-text +SAFE/UNSAFE output. + +## How a verdict is produced + +1. The pipeline reactor (`GenericGuardrailInputReactor` / `GenericGuardrailOutputReactor`) maps the + guarded text to the `prompt` parameter and merges `directParameters` into the call. +2. The engine merges the per-call overrides with its SMSS defaults. An invalid override is an + evaluation error, not a silent fallback. +3. The calling user must have view access to the judge (`SecurityEngineUtils.userCanViewEngine`). + The judge's own usage restrictions and inference logging apply as for any other call. +4. Without `respondWithGuardrailMessage`, every block surfaces `blockErrorMessage` +and `BLOCKED_MESSAGE` is unused. + +### Output: block a response that violates a disclosure policy + +```json +{ + "pipelines": { + "askRoom": { + "output": [ + { + "reactorClass": "prerna.reactor.interceptor.GenericGuardrailOutputReactor", + "params": { + "guardrailEngineId": "", + "inputMapping": { "prompt": "result" }, + "directParameters": { + "questionType": "CHOICE", + "questionCriteria": { + "APPROVED": "answer shares approved figures", + "OFF_PLAN": "answer mentions figures, dates, or customers not on the approved list" + }, + "violationChoices": ["OFF_PLAN"] + }, + "blockErrorMessage": "The response did not pass disclosure review." + } + } + ] + } + } +} +``` + +## Decision semantics + +- **noul**: the judge returns a yes probability `p` (0-1). `p >= 0.5` answers yes. Confidence is + `max(p, 1 - p)`, the probability of the selected answer. The answer is a violation when it points + at `VIOLATION_DIRECTION`. +- **choice**: the judge selects one configured choice with a confidence (0-1). Selecting a + `violationChoices` entry is a violation. A choice not in the criteria is an evaluation error. +- **threshold**: a decision is made only when confidence `>= CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD`. Otherwise the + outcome is `INDETERMINATE` and `LOW_CONFIDENCE_VERDICT` applies. + +| Outcome | When | Pass? | +|---|---|---| +| `PASS` | Non-violating answer at or above threshold | yes | +| `VIOLATION` | Violating answer at or above threshold | no | +| `INDETERMINATE` | Confidence below threshold | per `LOW_CONFIDENCE_VERDICT` (default block) | +| `ERROR` | Judge missing / not TYPESAFE / no access / timeout / malformed answer / invalid override / recursion / missing user | only if fail-open | +| `SKIPPED_NO_TEXT` | Nothing mapped to `prompt` | yes | + +Every verdict's details record the outcome, criterion, judge engine id, typed answer, confidence vs. +threshold, and a reason. + +### Choosing a threshold + +- For `noul`, confidence is never below `0.5`, so a threshold below `0.5` has no effect. +- With `LOW_CONFIDENCE_VERDICT BLOCK`, a higher threshold widens the blocked band. At `0.8`, any + yes probability between `0.2` and `0.8` blocks, including text the judge leans toward clean. + Measure the false-positive rate on representative traffic before raising it. + +## Limits + +- **Streaming output**: on `llmStreaming` / SSE routes, chunks are emitted while the guarded method + is still running. An output guardrail reviews the completed response after delivery; a violation + is recorded but cannot be recalled. Use an input guardrail to protect streamed calls. +- **Passthrough chat routes** (Ollama / Anthropic-compatible endpoints): `arg0` holds a pixel + placeholder and the real conversation is carried in the `full_prompt` parameter. An input + guardrail mapped to `arg0` screens the placeholder, not the conversation. Do not rely on this + guardrail for those routes until full-prompt screening ships. +- **No masking**: the engine blocks or passes. Do not combine it with `maskOnGuardrailFailure`; the + blocked message would replace the input and the call would proceed. +- **Latency**: every guarded call adds one judge round trip (bounded by `TIMEOUT_SECONDS`), and the + guarded text is sent to wherever the judge model is hosted. +- **Recursion**: re-entering the same guardrail on the same thread (for example through the judge's + own pipeline) is detected and treated as an evaluation error. diff --git a/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java b/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java index 803f0003a5..479c7abe45 100644 --- a/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java +++ b/src/prerna/engine/impl/guardrail/JevPolicyGuardrailEngine.java @@ -29,6 +29,7 @@ import java.util.ArrayDeque; import java.util.ArrayList; +import java.util.Collection; import java.util.Deque; import java.util.LinkedHashMap; import java.util.LinkedHashSet; @@ -197,6 +198,12 @@ public GuardrailNounMetadata execute(NounStore ns, GenRowStruct curRow) { @Override public GuardrailNounMetadata execute(NounStore ns, GenRowStruct curRow, IEngine targetEngine) { Map keyValue = organizeKeys(ns, curRow); + // organizeKeys stringifies with toString(), which turns a JSON object or array + // supplied natively in directParameters into non-JSON text - re-serialize those + putJsonOverride(keyValue, getRawNounValue(ns, null, QUESTION_CRITERIA_PARAM, 0), QUESTION_CRITERIA_PARAM, + false); + putJsonOverride(keyValue, getRawNounValue(ns, null, VIOLATION_CHOICES_PARAM, 0), VIOLATION_CHOICES_PARAM, + true); String textToEvaluate = PromptGuardrailEngine .extractText(getRawNounValue(ns, curRow, PROMPT_PARAM, 0)); if (textToEvaluate == null || textToEvaluate.isEmpty()) { @@ -211,10 +218,15 @@ public GuardrailNounMetadata execute(NounStore ns, GenRowStruct curRow, IEngine boolean defaultFailOpen = this.defaults != null && this.defaults.failOpen; try { call = resolveCallConfig(keyValue, this.defaults); + } catch (Exception e) { + // no valid per-call configuration - the engine's failure policy applies + return evaluationFailure(textToEvaluate, e, defaultFailOpen); + } + try { requireUserContext(insight); checkJudgeMount(targetEngine); } catch (Exception e) { - return evaluationFailure(textToEvaluate, e, defaultFailOpen); + return evaluationFailure(textToEvaluate, e, call.failOpen); } Deque active = ACTIVE_GUARDRAILS.get(); @@ -405,9 +417,8 @@ private GuardrailNounMetadata evaluationFailure(String textToEvaluate, Exception if (this.defaults != null) { details.put("judgeModelEngineId", this.defaults.judgeEngineId); } - if (!failOpen && this.defaults != null && this.defaults.blockedMessage != null) { - details.put("blockedMessage", this.defaults.blockedMessage); - } + // like the other judge guardrails, an error returns the input unchanged: the + // pipeline then blocks with its blockErrorMessage rather than a canned answer return new GuardrailNounMetadata(failOpen, textToEvaluate, details); } @@ -484,6 +495,26 @@ private static Object model(TypeSafeModelEngineResponse response) { return response.getResponse().get("model"); } + /** + * Replaces a stringified override with its JSON form when the pipeline + * supplied it as a native JSON object or array. Protecting streamed content at delivery time requires an input-side - guardrail or a stream-aware check; do not count the output reactor as protection - for content already emitted. - - ## Decision semantics - - - **noul** - the judge returns a yes probability `p` (0-1). `p >= 0.5` answers yes. - The confidence is `max(p, 1-p)`, the probability of the selected answer. A violation blocks when the answer - points at the configured `VIOLATION_DIRECTION` and confidence meets - `CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD`, inclusive. - - **choice** - the judge selects a configured choice with a confidence (0-1). Selecting a - `violationChoices` entry is a violation when the confidence meets the threshold, - inclusive. - - **below threshold** - never a silent pass: the configured `LOW_CONFIDENCE_VERDICT` - applies (default `BLOCK`). - - Errors - judge missing, not a TYPESAFE engine, timeout, malformed or missing answers, - invalid overrides - are evaluation errors, not policy violations, and are blocked unless - `FAIL_OPEN`/`failOpen` is explicitly `true`. The details of every verdict record the - outcome (`PASS`, `VIOLATION`, `INDETERMINATE`, `ERROR`), the criterion, the typed answer, - the confidence against the threshold, and the reason. - - Masking a request instead of blocking it is a separate transformation capability and is - not part of this guardrail. + ## Limits + + - On streaming routes the output is already emitted before an output guardrail sees it; + a violation is reported but cannot be recalled. + - On passthrough chat routes (Ollama / Anthropic) `arg0` holds a placeholder and the real + conversation rides in the `full_prompt` parameter; an input guardrail mapped to `arg0` + does not screen that conversation. + - For `noul`, confidence is `max(p, 1-p)`, so a threshold below `0.5` has no effect. + - This guardrail blocks; it does not mask. Do not combine it with `maskOnGuardrailFailure`. + + Errors (judge missing, not TYPESAFE, timeout, malformed answer, invalid override) block + unless `FAIL_OPEN` / `failOpen` is `true`. Verdict details record the outcome (`PASS`, + `VIOLATION`, `INDETERMINATE`, `ERROR`), criterion, typed answer, confidence, and reason.
