Plain-English Walkthrough

TL;DR

Bare authenticated effect calls now report missing failure mapping only after validating the call, profile, input and complete output context. [claim:behavior, confidence:1.00]

Walkthrough

The resolver uses the exact authenticated import signature. Conditional peers, including explicitly annotated branches, field projections and composed concatenation bounds travel with the enclosing requirement. Incompatible branches, oversized concatenations and non-byte UTF-8 operands report their primary TypeMismatch. Compatible bare effects still require explicit failure mapping. Diagnostic shape checks use cloned checker state and never construct an executable effect value. [claim:boundaries, confidence:0.99]

Regular merge 3b33a1cc8bf1a6975d0417968384457ce5da2250 incorporates main's result-budget and binding-recovery validation from merged #241, #247 and #248. Both contracts remain in the compiler topic shelf and have distinct test IDs. [claim:integration, confidence:0.99]

Validation

The review regressions were observed RED before their fixes, then GREEN. The current merged head passes full CARGO_TARGET_DIR=/Users/james/Library/Caches/jim-integration/edict-pr243-target-20261019 cargo +1.96.0 xtask verify, exit 0. Each worktree now owns a separate target directory. Earlier shared-target observations are historical because workspace artifacts could contaminate checks across worktrees. [claim:local-validation, confidence:1.00]

Latest annotated-conditional RED command: cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test effect_diagnostics annotated_conditional_effect_results_keep_primary_branch_type_errors -- --exact reported EffectWithoutFailureMapping before TypeMismatch. The fix retains peer validation and the enclosing annotation. All 23 effect-diagnostic and 53 binding-recovery regressions pass after integration. annotated_conditional_effect_results_keep_primary_branch_type_errors is at crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs#566@3b33a1cc8bf1a6975d0417968384457ce5da2250.

Latest regression command: cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test effect_diagnostics. Named regression witnesses: utf8_effect_operand_keeps_primary_byte_type_error in crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs#515@3b33a1cc8bf1a6975d0417968384457ce5da2250, conditional_effect_results_keep_primary_branch_type_errors in crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs#530@3b33a1cc8bf1a6975d0417968384457ce5da2250, concatenated_effect_results_keep_complete_output_bounds in crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs#602@3b33a1cc8bf1a6975d0417968384457ce5da2250. The complete current-head local gate includes these tests. The retained RED logs precede the implementation fixes; the gate and consumer rebuild follow the regular main merge.

A fresh public build of the genuine Jedit ReplaceRange application using this exact compiler head reproduces executable package SHA-256 31ed2bf3121d8ada879e2f1dee15e793a0106cd8c034beaad4dd3c4995e9629a and independent verification report SHA-256 3dab6a7de887acb0422a881c58130932819d16ecf8577a503d33031036732c86. The compiler binary hash was stable across the build. This establishes existing pure-reference compatibility; full-size rope, effects, admission and recovery remain separate work. [claim:consumer, confidence:1.00]

The final follow-up fixes two delayed review findings. Conditional-peer probes now traverse the peer without recursively starting more conditional-peer probes. The enclosing expected type reaches nested conditional literals and record fields. The earlier clean response on e098661 did not override these later findings. Both were addressed before resolving their threads. [claim:probe-fixes, confidence:1.00]

RED commands were cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test effect_diagnostics nested_effect_conditional_diagnostics_finish_within_deadline -- --exact, which timed out on a twenty-level linear input at the generous ten-second deadline, and cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test effect_signature_diagnostics conditional_effect_peers_preserve_nested_literal_context -- --exact, which reported a spurious missing literal-width TypeMismatch. The mapped numeric control compiled before the fix. An initial later record-control fixture accidentally replaced the original mapped binding and produced a parse error; this setup error is excluded from RED evidence.

GREEN runs all 24 effect, 8 signature and 53 recovery tests, followed by full dedicated-target cargo +1.96.0 xtask verify, exit 0. The deadline catches the previous work explosion; it is not a compilation performance guarantee. The contextual fixture is repinned through the authenticated export digest and exercises scalar and record cases in both branch orders. No placeholder value or executable effect authority is introduced.

Hosted CI and a fresh exact-head alternate review are still required. CodeRabbit is rate limited. A bot approval command alone does not authorize merging while any finding is unresolved. All current finding threads were resolved with regression evidence before requesting review of 3b33a1c.

Documentation impact: compiler-spine contract/test plan, language reference where applicable, and CHANGELOG. No dependency or executable effect capability is added.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved diagnostics for imported effect calls in intent bodies that lack a failure mapping, including domain-mappable failure names and call location.
    • Clarified errors for effects with no declared failures, generic effects, explicit type arguments, malformed argument counts, and effects used in pure contexts.
    • Effect permissions, argument types, and predicate output requirements are checked before failure-map guidance, preserving primary errors.
    • Unknown effects in explicit bindings list available effects from the matching imported owner when that information is available. Bare unknown calls remain unresolved-function errors.
    • Authenticated effect signatures provide contextual input types, including for integer literals. Valid mapped calls and legacy contexts retain their existing behavior.
  • Documentation

    • Documented effect diagnostic behavior and expanded coverage for mapped and unmapped effects, unknown effects, validation errors, pure contexts, and legacy contexts.

Walkthrough

The compiler now resolves authenticated effect exports and validates effect calls in intent bodies. It checks call shape, profile permissions, and input and output types before reporting missing failure mappings. Tests and documentation cover these diagnostics and preserve existing primary errors.

Changes

Effect Diagnostic Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Authenticate effect exports
crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs, crates/edict-syntax/src/lawpack_adapter.rs
Compiler context records authenticated effect exports by import alias and owning lawpack. The adapter supplies exported effect coordinates and includes only DomainMappable failures in mapping guidance.
Validate effect calls and resolve diagnostics
crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs, crates/edict-cli/src/main.rs
The checker propagates value and predicate expectations, checks effect call shape, input and output types, and intent profile permissions. Exact imported effects without a failure mapping produce EffectWithoutFailureMapping; unknown explicit effects use authenticated exports from the exact owner. The CLI maps the new error kind.
Verify and document diagnostic behavior
crates/edict-syntax/tests/*, docs/SPEC_edict-language-v1.md, docs/topics/compiler-spine/*, CHANGELOG.md, EDICT.md
Tests cover missing and zero-failure mappings, generic and malformed calls, pure contexts, unknown effects, aliases, contextual types, and preservation of primary diagnostics. Documentation records the diagnostic behavior and test cases.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #238 requires separate missing-map and unknown-effect diagnostics, exact-owner guidance, stable kinds, source spans, valid-call preservation, and automated coverage. The reviewed summary and tests show EffectWithoutFailureMapping for authenticated bare effects, MissingContextFact with exact-owner exports for unknown explicit effects, and unchanged UnresolvedFunction for bare unknown calls. Mapped calls, aliases, refusal cases, primary errors, and independent behavior have controls. The public kind mapping, compiler documentation, CHANGELOG, and compiler-spine test plan are updated. No concrete #238 coding requirement remains unmet.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed resolver, authenticated effect surface, failure classification, tests, public kind mapping, documentation, CHANGELOG, and test plan support issue #238. The added input, output, predicate, profile, arity, and type-argument checks prevent misleading mapping guidance and preserve existing refusal behavior. The reported merges do not establish a separate unrelated implementation in the reviewed change summary. No new capability, runtime callback, wire artifact, field-mismatch recovery, poisoned-binding handling, or dependent-error recovery is demonstrated.

Code Lawyer audit — head b0fa779

Lockdown passed: clean checkout, regular fetch, exact main base 01161c1. The complete seven-file diff and surrounding compiler callers were inspected. This branch has one additive commit and no merges.

Path Source and acceptance boundary Result
Pure-call resolution resolve_pure_function checks an exact authenticated effect signature before pure-helper lookup. fact_matches_source_import verifies resource/alias/suffix ownership. Bare known effects receive the dedicated kind and declared failure names. Unknown/unowned helpers retain the existing path.
Semantic-effect profile check Missing write-class context uses missing_effect_context_message. Its export list filters exact resource, source alias, and signature ownership. Unrelated context write-class facts do not appear as exports. Missing context remains a refusal.
Valid effect bindings check_effect_let and existing signature/profile/obstruction validation remain unchanged. Both original and renamed exact aliases compile through a complete mapping.
Public diagnostic naming CompilerErrorKind adds the variant; CLI compiler_error_kind_name has an exhaustive explicit mapping. No new capability, artifact wire format, or recovery semantics.
Evidence and documentation effect_diagnostics stable kind/stage/span assertions, imported lawpack control, formal spec, owning topic requirement/cases, CHANGELOG Primary guidance is tested and current. Dependent-error recovery and field mismatch remain separate issues.

Activity Summary

The exact-lawpack test first observed RED: two intended primary-diagnostic assertion failures and one passing mapped control. The setup-only alias mutation error was corrected before implementation and is excluded from resolver RED evidence. GREEN passes all three tests. The full syntax suite and guarded Docker cargo xtask verify pass. The final gate supersedes the earlier lint-only and topic-directory-path failures.

No actionable self-finding emerged in this author audit. Independent exact-head agy and current bot/CI gates remain required. CodeRabbit is rate limited; its successful status is not approval. No merge is claimed.

Independent agy review at b0fa779e0d93d2a2b634070bd73c9d1ff775e348. Full output follows, including the duplicate emitted by the reviewer. Its APPROVE verdict does not waive the verified zero-failure guidance flaw or the signature clone cleanup; these will be addressed before merge. The original bytes were delivered intact to Reader (receipt bc95577b-14b2-4b98-8e2a-1b0af1f69255).

1. Verified P0–P5 Findings

Defects (P0–P3)

  • None. Static analysis confirmed that:
    • Classification does not leak authority: authentication requires CoreImportKind::Lawpack with exact matching digest-locked resource coordinates.
    • No capability or wire protocol artifact is granted or synthesized.
    • Spans accurately target the call expression.
    • Error stages remain CompilerStage::TypeCheck.
    • Diagnostics correctly identify the required failure mapping handler name (alreadyExists).
    • Public enum projection in edict-cli covers EffectWithoutFailureMapping exhaustively.

Low-Severity & Ergonomic Findings (P4–P5)

[P4] Zero-Failure Semantic Effect Formats Empty Failure List in Diagnostic Message

  • Concrete Scenario: If a lawpack export defines a semantic effect with an empty failure map (effect_failures: {}), a bare call in an expression context triggers resolve_pure_function. Lines 3952–3957 gather failure names via signature.failure_payload_types.keys().cloned().collect::<Vec<_>>().join(", "), producing "". The resulting message reads:
    "effect <coord> is not a pure helper; use an annotated effect binding with else; declared failures: " (with trailing whitespace and no failure names).
    Furthermore, in the Edict grammar (crates/edict-syntax/src/parser.rs#1279-1284@b0fa779), an obstruction map requires at least one arm (ParseErrorKind::EmptyObstructionMap: obstruction map must contain at least one arm), so an author cannot write an empty obstruction map.
  • Source Evidence: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3952-3964@b0fa779
  • Smallest Coherent Fix:
    let failures = if signature.failure_payload_types.is_empty() {
        "none".to_owned()
    } else {
        signature.failure_payload_types.keys().cloned().collect::<Vec<_>>().join(", ")
    };

[P5] Redundant Clone on Error Path in resolve_pure_function

  • Concrete Scenario: At crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3941@b0fa779, self.resolved.effect_signatures.get(&source_coordinate).cloned() clones the entire EffectSignatureFact (including inner BTreeMap and Vec structures) before checking self.fact_matches_source_import.
  • Source Evidence: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3941-3947@b0fa779
  • Smallest Coherent Fix: Borrow signature and only clone failure keys when self.fact_matches_source_import returns true.

2. Missing Evidence & Coverage Analysis (Separate from Defects)

  1. Bare Effect Inside Source-Owned Pure Function:
    • Static finding: A bare imported effect called within a source function body (fn foo() { hello.createGreeting(x) }) traverses crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs#146@b0fa779 -> check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function and emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping.
    • Coverage gap: All test cases in crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs test calls inside intent bodies; none test calls inside a fn declaration.
  2. Multi-Failure Effect Diagnostic Formatting:
    • Static finding: failure_payload_types.keys() iterates in alphabetical order over BTreeMap keys.
    • Coverage gap: The test fixture hello-echo only has a single failure variant (alreadyExists). Multi-failure formatting ("alreadyExists, outOfStock") is unexercised by integration tests.
  3. Bare Unknown Effect Expression:
    • Static finding: A bare call to an unknown effect (let x = hello.nonExistent(y);) without else fails lookup in effect_signatures and pure_functions, producing CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedFunction. Only the let ... else path triggers check_effect_profile and missing_effect_context_message.
    • Coverage gap: unknown_effect_lists_its_exact_owner_exports only tests the let ... else syntax.

Review Case Traced Flow Observed Diagnostic / Invariant Authority / Safety Check
All Expr::Call routes entering pure resolution check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> check_imported_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function EffectWithoutFailureMapping on authenticated effect, else UnresolvedFunction Preserved: non-plain callee rejected at line 3935
Source-owned function resolution check_pure_call checks self.function_signatures.get(name) Diverts to check_source_call (line 3754) Bypasses imported pure/effect resolution entirely; no collision possible
Imported pure functions Falls through effect check to self.resolved.pure_functions.get Returns Some(PureFunctionFact) if import matches; rejected at line 3777 if also in effect_write_classes Dual-classified coordinates rejected with UnsupportedSourceShape
Exact imported effects effect_signatures.get succeeds and fact_matches_source_import returns true EffectWithoutFailureMapping (stage TypeCheck, span of call, declared failure variants) Requires exact matching CoreImportKind::Lawpack resource
Wrong / unowned aliases split_once('.') extracts alias; no matching import in self.resolved.imports Returns fallback message "effect <coord> has no compiler context fact" Does not reveal any exports from valid lawpacks
Incomplete effect signatures vs write-classes Signatures without write classes reject at line 2994; write-classes without signatures reject at line 3092 / 3777 Stable MissingContextFact or UnsupportedSourceShape Neither side permits lowering an invalid or unauthenticated effect
Valid effects with 0 or multiple failures 0 failures yields empty string (see P4); multiple failures joined with comma Names variants in BTreeMap sorted order Does not panic or crash
Effect coordinate collisions Both effect_signatures and pure_functions contain coordinate Effect check runs first (line 3941), emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping Pure helper path never reached; line 3777 guards lowerable path
Request-only imports (Capability) Filter specifies import.kind == CoreImportKind::Lawpack Rejects capability imports at line 2979 (UnsupportedSourceShape), line 3888, line 3899 Capabilities never treated as lawpacks or semantic effects
Unsupported nested effect expressions E.g. 1 + hello.createGreeting(x) Child expression emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping at call span, parent fails gracefully Accurate child span maintained; no panic
Profile-write mismatch ordering Bare call with write class not permitted by intent profile check_known_effect_profiles rejects with ProfileEffectMismatch at line 2373 Rejection occurs before pure body expression checks; no authority leak
Independent / cascading diagnostics Bare effect call fails, omitting binder from env; following usages fail on missing ident Primary error is EffectWithoutFailureMapping at index 0 Dependent recovery intentionally deferred to #240

5. Executed Author Evidence vs. Static Inspection

Phase Artifact / Log Execution Details (Author Evidence) Static Review Finding
Pre-implementation Initial RED [f02a-red.log](file://local review evidence: f02a-red.log) 3 failed tests. mapped_effect_controls_remain_valid failed due to invalid fixture string replacement (SourceImportMismatch). Correctly identified by author as fixture error, not resolver RED.

  • Review Mode: Adversarial, independent, read-only inspection. Zero host tests executed by reviewer; zero file modifications; zero git mutation operations; zero background subagents or Docker operations.

1. Verified P0–P5 Findings

Defects (P0–P3)

  • None. Static analysis confirmed that:
    • Classification does not leak authority: authentication requires CoreImportKind::Lawpack with exact matching digest-locked resource coordinates.
    • No capability or wire protocol artifact is granted or synthesized.
    • Spans accurately target the call expression.
    • Error stages remain CompilerStage::TypeCheck.
    • Diagnostics correctly identify the required failure mapping handler name (alreadyExists).
    • Public enum projection in edict-cli covers EffectWithoutFailureMapping exhaustively.

Low-Severity & Ergonomic Findings (P4–P5)

[P4] Zero-Failure Semantic Effect Formats Empty Failure List in Diagnostic Message

  • Concrete Scenario: If a lawpack export defines a semantic effect with an empty failure map (effect_failures: {}), a bare call in an expression context triggers resolve_pure_function. Lines 3952–3957 gather failure names via signature.failure_payload_types.keys().cloned().collect::<Vec<_>>().join(", "), producing "". The resulting message reads:
    "effect <coord> is not a pure helper; use an annotated effect binding with else; declared failures: " (with trailing whitespace and no failure names).
    Furthermore, in the Edict grammar (crates/edict-syntax/src/parser.rs#1279-1284@b0fa779), an obstruction map requires at least one arm (ParseErrorKind::EmptyObstructionMap: obstruction map must contain at least one arm), so an author cannot write an empty obstruction map.
  • Source Evidence: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3952-3964@b0fa779
  • Smallest Coherent Fix:
    let failures = if signature.failure_payload_types.is_empty() {
        "none".to_owned()
    } else {
        signature.failure_payload_types.keys().cloned().collect::<Vec<_>>().join(", ")
    };

[P5] Redundant Clone on Error Path in resolve_pure_function

  • Concrete Scenario: At crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3941@b0fa779, self.resolved.effect_signatures.get(&source_coordinate).cloned() clones the entire EffectSignatureFact (including inner BTreeMap and Vec structures) before checking self.fact_matches_source_import.
  • Source Evidence: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3941-3947@b0fa779
  • Smallest Coherent Fix: Borrow signature and only clone failure keys when self.fact_matches_source_import returns true.

2. Missing Evidence & Coverage Analysis (Separate from Defects)

  1. Bare Effect Inside Source-Owned Pure Function:
    • Static finding: A bare imported effect called within a source function body (fn foo() { hello.createGreeting(x) }) traverses crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs#146@b0fa779 -> check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function and emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping.
    • Coverage gap: All test cases in crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs test calls inside intent bodies; none test calls inside a fn declaration.
  2. Multi-Failure Effect Diagnostic Formatting:
    • Static finding: failure_payload_types.keys() iterates in alphabetical order over BTreeMap keys.
    • Coverage gap: The test fixture hello-echo only has a single failure variant (alreadyExists). Multi-failure formatting ("alreadyExists, outOfStock") is unexercised by integration tests.
  3. Bare Unknown Effect Expression:
    • Static finding: A bare call to an unknown effect (let x = hello.nonExistent(y);) without else fails lookup in effect_signatures and pure_functions, producing CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedFunction. Only the let ... else path triggers check_effect_profile and missing_effect_context_message.
    • Coverage gap: unknown_effect_lists_its_exact_owner_exports only tests the let ... else syntax.

Review Case Traced Flow Observed Diagnostic / Invariant Authority / Safety Check
All Expr::Call routes entering pure resolution check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> check_imported_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function EffectWithoutFailureMapping on authenticated effect, else UnresolvedFunction Preserved: non-plain callee rejected at line 3935

Code Lawyer Activity Summary — candidate 749b247

The checkout is clean and a regular fetch confirmed base 01161c1. The full diff and every changed caller were inspected. These commits add no merge history. A normal push succeeded after two transient GitHub internal server errors; no history rewrite occurred.

Item Severity / source Commit Validation Outcome
Zero-failure signature guidance P4, agy; independently reproduced through a valid rebound bundle and adapter fbb134d RED: cargo test -p edict-syntax --test lawpack bare_effect_without_declared_failures_reports_binding_limitation; intended guidance assertion failed after valid preparation and kind/span checks. GREEN: cargo fmt --all --check && cargo test -p edict-syntax --test lawpack --test effect_diagnostics; all 67 tests passed. Fixed and pushed. The stable primary kind/stage/span remain; no-map binding syntax is still unsupported.
Avoidable full signature clone P5, agy 749b247 Concrete source before/after; cargo xtask verify passes on the same source after the borrow edit. No behavior RED/GREEN was required for this internal allocation cleanup. Fixed and pushed.
Coverage suggestions agy, not verified defects — Existing mapped controls and alias ownership cases remain valid. Multiple-failure/source-function coverage suggestions remain distinct from demonstrated flaws; no new capability or recovery claim is made.

The full gate includes format, Clippy, workspace tests/doctests, artifact goldens, provider checks and all 28 topic shelves. Historical release-dates output still records one uncovered old surface; the existing gate exits zero, and this is not a claim that all historical release evidence exists.

Raw review and zero-failure RED/GREEN/full-gate logs are retained for the fresh independent review. Reader receipt bc95577b-14b2-4b98-8e2a-1b0af1f69255 is filed/intact. The old agy verdict at b0fa779 is superseded; current-head independent review, CI and required bot gates are pending. Merge gate remains locked until their results are available.

The fresh independent agy source review of 749b247 returns APPROVE with a complete checklist and confirms the P4/P5 fixes. Original feedback is preserved in Reader receipt 050f2b3e-646d-45be-b4a0-a62830bbf016. Source approval does not establish CI or bot completion.

Independent reconciliation: the review's legacy-context row overstates rejection when a write-class fact lacks an effect signature. Existing manually supplied legacy context remains a separate supported boundary; check_effect_call conditionally checks an available signature. This PR does not newly close that boundary. Some caller labels/line ranges are informal; source definitions, not those labels, govern the audit. I am also tightening the public documentation to state the review's accurate unknown-call distinction: an explicit effect binding can receive owner-export guidance; a bare unknown call still reports UnresolvedFunction because its intent is not known. This is documentation precision and added coverage, not a change in resolution.

Full feedback follows:

Adversarial Independent Read-Only Review: flyingrobots/edict PR #243

1. Verified P0–P5 Findings

Defects (P0–P3)

Remediated Findings (P4–P5)

[P4 Remediated] Zero-Failure Semantic Effect Diagnostic Guidance

  • Issue in b0fa779: A bare call to an authenticated effect with an empty failure map (effect_failures: {}) produced "declared failures: " with an empty string and recommended else, which the Edict parser rejects (ParseErrorKind::EmptyObstructionMap).
  • Remediation in fbb134d: Lines 3953–3958 branch on signature.failure_payload_types.is_empty(). If empty, guidance states: "no declared failures; effect bindings without a failure map are not supported".
  • Witnesses:

[P5 Remediated] Redundant Clone on Error Path

  • Issue in b0fa779: Line 3941 cloned EffectSignatureFact prior to running fact_matches_source_import.
  • Remediation in 749b247: Line 3941 borrows signature directly via self.resolved.effect_signatures.get(&source_coordinate). Failure keys are collected only after fact_matches_source_import validates ownership. Verified as a pure allocation cleanup with identical semantics.

2. Missing Evidence & Coverage Analysis (Separate from Defects)

  1. Bare Effect Inside Source-Owned Pure Function:
    • Static route: A bare imported effect in a function body (fn foo() { hello.createGreeting(x) }) traverses crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs#L146 -> check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function and emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping.
    • Coverage boundary: Primary integration tests in tests/effect_diagnostics.rs exercise calls inside intent bodies; none test calls inside a fn declaration.
  2. Multi-Failure Effect Diagnostic Formatting:
    • Static route: signature.failure_payload_types.keys() iterates over a BTreeMap, providing lexicographically sorted variant names ("alreadyExists, outOfStock").
    • Coverage boundary: Test fixtures only provide single-variant failure maps (alreadyExists). Multi-failure concatenation is unexercised in integration fixtures.
  3. Bare Unknown Effect Expression:
    • Static route: A bare call let x = hello.nonExistent(y); without else fails lookup in both effect_signatures and pure_functions, emitting CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedFunction.
    • Design boundary: Only the let ... else path enters check_effect_profile to emit MissingContextFact with owner export guidance via missing_effect_context_message. Without else, the resolver cannot distinguish an intended effect from an unresolved pure helper.

Zero-Failure Guidance RED f02a-zero-red.log cargo test -p edict-syntax --test lawpack bare_effect_without_declared_failures_reports_binding_limitation: failed assert!(cause.message.contains("no declared failures")). Valid deterministic RED witness for P4 zero-failure guidance remediation.
Zero-Failure Format Blocked f02a-zero-format-blocked.log cargo fmt --all --check caught long lines in test file. Not GREEN evidence; confirmed formatting was corrected prior to final gate.
Zero-Failure Guidance GREEN f02a-zero-green.log Passes all 3 effect_diagnostics tests and all 64 lawpack tests. Proves P4 remediation is green.
Candidate Final Full Gate f02a-reviewed-verify.log Full cargo xtask verify exit 0: fmt, clippy (-D warnings), workspace tests/doctests, goldens, provider fixtures, 28 topic shelves validated, clean diff against origin/main. Reused worker edict-validation within declared budgets; historical release-dates policy note reconciled.
External Review Gate pr243-reviews.json CodeRabbit rate limited (Review limit reached); Codex review was running on 749b247 at snapshot time. Confirmed: no bot approval is inferred; binding independent review authorized by user.

c8dadb2 changes only diagnostic documentation and an existing-behavior control. Four primary diagnostic tests and the complete guarded Docker cargo xtask verify pass. Unknown export guidance is now explicitly scoped to effect bindings; bare unknown calls retain UnresolvedFunction. Previous source approval is superseded pending exact-head confirmation. @codex review please

Code Lawyer Activity Summary — 25b088e

The branch now integrates main PR #244 through ordinary merge e155350. I inspected the diff against both parents; only CHANGELOG conflicted, and both reviewed entries were preserved. The complete local gate passed after the merge and all three review fixes. All five current-head hosted CI jobs pass.

Finding Source / severity Fix Evidence Disposition
Absent signatures falsely imply no exports Codex P2 cd642e1 Public legacy context first compiles a known effect; unknown-call RED fails the intended missing-information assertion. GREEN passes five primary and 66 lawpack tests. Fixed, pushed, thread resolved.
Incomplete wire-code reference Codex P2 c30e508 EDICT D.4 reconciled against all 16 current compiler variants and exhaustive CLI mapping. Concrete reference correction; no fabricated behavior RED. Fixed, pushed, thread resolved.
TP066 unscoped oracle CodeRabbit minor 25b088e Oracle now explicitly covers effect bindings; TP069 independently checks bare unknown calls remain UnresolvedFunction. Fixed, pushed, thread resolved.
Earlier zero-failure / clone findings agy P4 / P5 fbb134d, 749b247 Prior RED/GREEN and full gate retained; current full gate passes. Remain fixed.

Current full gate: cargo xtask verify, observed exit0 in f02a-final-review-verify.log, executed in the same guarded Docker worker. Formatter-only interruption f02a-legacy-format-blocked.log is not GREEN evidence. No runtime capability, additional signature precondition, poisoned recovery or field-mismatch detail is claimed.

MERGE GATE: LOCKED. A fresh agy review is running for this exact head. CodeRabbit's formal changes-requested state remains a blocker after thread resolution. The current alternate review was requested; source approvals and review-state cleanup are evaluated independently. No review dismissal or protection bypass was performed.

Current-head independent agy source review: APPROVE with a complete checklist at 25b088ead4c4841375aa6bd4ba7eb46a33fabe65. It verifies the three later findings and audits the main merge against both parents. Raw feedback is preserved in Reader receipt 7e5149a5-1f49-4fd8-bd07-0b7d6a9e225f.

Author qualifications: informal caller labels and some diagram coordinates do not replace actual source definitions. The profile-priority row contains contradictory wording; the source retains its existing prechecks and ownership rules, and I do not adopt a changed-priority claim. The legacy-context correction is explicitly verified by the public positive control and unknown-call RED/GREEN. The report's broad authority sentence applies to classification from authenticated signatures, not a universal new signature requirement for legacy contexts. All five hosted CI jobs pass; required current-head bot response and formal changes-requested state remain separate gates. No dismissal or override occurred.

Full feedback follows:

Adversarial Independent Read-Only Review: flyingrobots/edict PR #243

  • Target PR: flyingrobots/edict#243
  • Branch: fix/effect-call-diagnostics
  • Candidate Head Commit: 25b088ead4c4841375aa6bd4ba7eb46a33fabe65
  • Target Base Commit (origin/main): 67adee201d9da9d8bae608f3906474a6f31314f9
  • Inspection Path: Clean frozen checkout at frozen review checkout
  • Review Mode: Adversarial, independent, read-only inspection. Zero host tests executed by reviewer; zero file modifications; zero git mutation operations; zero background subagents or Docker operations spawned. Distinguishes executed author evidence from static inspection. Prior approvals at b0fa779, 749b247, and c8dadb2 are superseded.

1. Verified P0–P5 Findings & Remediation Audit

Open Defects (P0–P3)

Audit of Three Later Findings (Remediated & Verified)

1. [Codex P2 Remediated] Legacy-Context False "None" Export Guidance

  • Defect in c8dadb2 / 749b247: In missing_effect_context_message, if available.is_empty(), the compiler reported imported lawpack <resource> has these available effect exports: none. However, in a publicly constructed or authority-facts CompilerContext, effect_write_classes may be populated while crate-private effect_signatures remains empty. Calling an unknown effect on that context caused the diagnostic to falsely claim that the lawpack exported nothing, even though the context could successfully compile known effects from the exact same lawpack.
  • Remediation in cd642e1: Lines 3916–3926 branch on available.is_empty(). If empty, the message states: missing authenticated effect export information for imported lawpack <resource>. If nonempty, the message explicitly scopes availability: available authenticated effect exports in this compiler context for imported lawpack <resource>: <list>.
  • Witnesses:

2. [Codex P2 Remediated] Public Diagnostic Reference Inventory Omission

  • Defect in c8dadb2: EDICT.md §D.4 documented the Compiler error category as having 11 items, omitting EffectWithoutFailureMapping and four previously existing variants (UnresolvedFunction, InvalidBound, ReservedTypeIdentity, InvalidCoreTypeIntegrity).
  • Remediation in c30e508: EDICT.md#L1272 updates the count to 16 and includes all 16 CompilerErrorKind variants, matching the enum in compiler.rs#L44-L61 and CLI projection in main.rs#L1260-L1277. No behavior RED/GREEN was required for this documentation reference correction.

3. [CodeRabbit P4 Remediated] CSPINE-TP-066 Test Plan Oracle Scope

  • Defect in c8dadb2: The oracle for CSPINE-TP-066 stated: "Unknown calls retain MissingContextFact and source span...", conflicting with CSPINE-TP-069 which assigns UnresolvedFunction to bare unknown calls.
  • Remediation in 25b088e: docs/topics/compiler-spine/test-plan.md#L191 restricts CSPINE-TP-066 to: "Unknown effects in explicit effect bindings retain MissingContextFact and source span, with available authenticated effect names only from the exact imported owner and selected alias." This matches the test implementation unknown_effect_lists_its_exact_owner_exports.

Audit of Earlier Remediated Findings

4. [P4 Remediated] Zero-Failure Effect Guidance Formatting

5. [P5 Remediated] Redundant Signature Fact Clone on Error Path

  • Issue in b0fa779: Line 3941 cloned EffectSignatureFact prior to validating import ownership.
  • Remediation in 749b247: Line 3943 borrows signature directly via self.resolved.effect_signatures.get(&source_coordinate). Verified as pure allocation cleanup without behavior change.

6. [Documentation & Boundary Control] Bare-Unknown Call Distinction

2. Audit of Merge Commit e155350 (PR #244 Integration)

Merge commit e155350 integrates origin/main (67adee2, merging PR #244 / 50a0230) into the branch.

1. Parentage and Merge Metadata

2. Comparison Against Each Parent

3. Semantic Interaction Verification

3. Missing Evidence & Coverage Analysis (Separate from Defects)

  1. Multi-Failure Effect Diagnostic Formatting:
    • Static Route: signature.failure_payload_types.keys() iterates over a BTreeMap<String, ...>, producing lexicographically ordered keys joined by ", ".
    • Coverage Boundary: Integration test fixture hello-echo contains only one failure variant (alreadyExists). Multi-failure concatenation (e.g. "alreadyExists, outOfStock") is unexercised in integration test assertions.
  2. Bare Effect Inside Source-Owned Pure Function:
    • Static Route: A bare imported effect in a module function body (fn foo() { hello.createGreeting(x) }) traverses source_functions.rs#L146 -> check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> check_imported_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function, emitting EffectWithoutFailureMapping.
    • Coverage Boundary: Primary integration tests in crates/edict-syntax/tests/effect_diagnostics.rs test calls inside intent bodies; none test calls inside a fn declaration.
  3. Historical Release Surface Policy Note:
    • Static Route: Running cargo xtask verify evaluates tag dates against git history. Output records release-dates: uncovered - MissingSurface: v0.1.0-alpha.1 [policy block] on tag v0.1.0-alpha.1.
    • Evidence Boundary: The gate command exits 0, confirming that this is an expected historical baseline, not a full historical coverage claim.

Specific Case Traces & Legacy Context Reconciliation

Correction note on prior report: The previous report inaccurately stated that write-classes without signatures reject at line 3092. In fact, check_effect_call conditionally validates an effect signature only when signature is Some(...). When a public CompilerContext defines effect_write_classes without lawpack signatures, valid mapped effect calls continue to compile. This PR does not alter that accepted legacy boundary; it only fixes the diagnostic message when an unknown effect is called.

Review Case Traced Execution Route Observed Diagnostic & Invariant Authority & Classification Validation
All Expr::Call routes entering pure resolution check_expr_with_expected -> check_pure_call -> check_imported_pure_call -> resolve_pure_function EffectWithoutFailureMapping on authenticated effect, else UnresolvedFunction Unstable/non-plain callee rejected at line 3935; no lowering escape
Source-owned function resolution check_pure_call checks self.function_signatures.get(name) Diverts to check_source_call (line 3754) Bypasses imported pure/effect resolution entirely; no name collisions
Imported pure functions Falls through effect check to self.resolved.pure_functions.get Returns Some(PureFunctionFact) if import matches; rejected at line 3770 if also in effect_write_classes Dual-classified coordinates rejected with UnsupportedSourceShape
Exact imported effects effect_signatures.get succeeds and fact_matches_source_import returns true EffectWithoutFailureMapping (stage TypeCheck, span of call, declared failure variants) Requires exact matching CoreImportKind::Lawpack resource
Wrong / unowned aliases split_once('.') extracts alias; no matching import in self.resolved.imports Returns fallback message "effect <coord> has no compiler context fact" Filters by source alias; never leaks exports of unreferenced lawpacks
Incomplete effect signatures vs write-classes (legacy context) effect_signatures empty, effect_write_classes present; mapped call compiles; unknown explicit effect enters missing_effect_context_message Emits MissingContextFact with missing authenticated effect export information for imported lawpack <resource> Preserves legacy compilation; does not falsely claim the lawpack exports none
Valid effects with 0 declared failures 0 failures branches at line 3955, reporting no declared failures; effect bindings without a failure map are not supported Retains primary kind, stage, and span; does not suggest impossible empty else map Verified by CSPINE-TP-068 and bare_effect_without_declared_failures_reports_binding_limitation
Valid effects with multiple declared failures Formats sorted failure names joined by comma Lists variants in deterministic BTreeMap order; guides author to else mapping Actionable diagnostic guidance; no panic
Effect coordinate collisions Both effect_signatures and pure_functions contain coordinate Effect check runs first (line 3943), emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping Pure helper path never reached; line 3770 guards lowerable path
Request-only imports (Capability) Filter requires import.kind == CoreImportKind::Lawpack Rejects capability imports at lines 2979, 3888, 3899 Capabilities never treated as lawpacks or callable semantic effects
Unsupported nested effect expressions E.g. 1 + hello.createGreeting(x) Child expression emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping at call span, parent fails gracefully Accurate child span maintained; no cascading panic
Profile-write mismatch ordering Bare call with write class not permitted by intent profile In bare calls, resolve_pure_function emits EffectWithoutFailureMapping before body execution Profile rejection occurs before pure body expression checks; no authority leak
Independent / cascading diagnostics Bare effect call fails, omitting binder from env; following usages fail on missing ident Primary error is EffectWithoutFailureMapping at index 0 Dependent recovery intentionally deferred to #240

5. Executed Author Evidence vs. Static Inspection

Phase Artifact / Log Execution Details (Author Evidence) Static Review Assessment
Pre-implementation Initial RED f02a-red.log 3 failed tests. mapped_effect_controls_remain_valid failed due to invalid fixture string replacement (SourceImportMismatch). Correctly isolated by author as fixture setup defect, not resolver RED evidence.
Pre-implementation Corrected RED f02a-red-corrected.log 2 failed tests: UnresolvedFunction vs EffectWithoutFailureMapping, and missing owner exports in error message. 1 passed (mapped_effect_controls_remain_valid). Valid deterministic RED witness for both primary diagnostic behaviors.
Post-implementation GREEN f02a-green.log cargo test -p edict-syntax --test effect_diagnostics: 3 passed; 0 failed. Proves all three initial test oracles satisfied.
Zero-Failure Guidance RED f02a-zero-red.log cargo test -p edict-syntax --test lawpack bare_effect_without_declared_failures_reports_binding_limitation: failed assert!(cause.message.contains("no declared failures")). Valid deterministic RED witness for zero-failure guidance remediation.
Proves zero-failure remediation is green.
Existing Boundary Control f02a-bare-unknown-control.log Passes all 4 tests in tests/effect_diagnostics.rs, verifying bare unknown call retains UnresolvedFunction. Records existing behavior control without fabricating behavior RED.
Legacy Context RED f02a-legacy-red.log legacy_context_without_signatures_does_not_claim_no_exports failed assert!(cause.message.contains("missing authenticated effect export information")). Valid deterministic RED witness for legacy-context guidance fix (cd642e1).
Legacy Context Format Blocked f02a-legacy-format-blocked.log cargo fmt --all --check caught formatting diff in test file. Not GREEN evidence; format diff corrected.
Legacy Context GREEN f02a-legacy-green.log Passes all 5 effect_diagnostics tests and all 66 lawpack tests (71 tests total). Proves legacy context remediation is green.
Candidate Final Full Gate f02a-final-review-verify.log Full cargo xtask verify exit 0 on head 25b088e: fmt, clippy (-D warnings), workspace tests/doctests, all goldens, provider fixtures, all 28 topic shelves validated, clean diff against origin/main. Please review integrated head 6b449cb. CodeRabbit is rate limited. The regular main merge retains the UTF-8 call dispatch and effect-output expectations, projects authenticated export inventory per lawpack alias, and preserves both lawpack test groups. All 129 focused tests and the full local gate pass; the genuine isolated Jedit consumer reproduces its executable-package and independent-report bytes. Hosted checks are running. The earlier review covered the preceding head and does not certify this merge.

@codex review please

Please review final integrated head 6847c64. All prior actionable findings have tested fixes and resolved threads. Main #241 is merged through a regular merge. Full local gate passes in a dedicated per-worktree Cargo target, and a fresh genuine Jedit public build reproduces the baseline package and independent report byte-for-byte. PR body contains the current scope, evidence and remaining limits.

@codex review please

Please review final integrated 7dc9db7. Annotated conditional peer validation has observed RED/GREEN and valid controls. This regular merge incorporates main247 recovery while preserving effect-output requirements, independent traversal, intrinsic-context reset and literal context. All23 effect diagnostics and53 recovery tests pass, followed by the full isolated local gate and an exact-head genuine Jedit package/report equality proof. All findings resolved.

Please review final integrated head7dc9db7e3732a6c819b2b2c3b2a5ce221bee88e1. All prior findings have tested fixes and resolved threads. The branch incorporates merged main247, with23 effect diagnostics,53 recovery tests, the full isolated local gate and genuine Jedit artifact equality passing. Current-head alternate review was requested separately; its response remains pending.

Please review e098661, the current head. CodeRabbit is rate limited. The prior request for7dc9db7 has not produced a review response; its existing findings are fixed and resolved. This regular merge incorporates landed248 after247 and241. Only CHANGELOG conflicted; both entries are retained. Full dedicated-target verification passes. The compiler code is identical to7dc9db7, which passed23 effect tests,53 recovery tests and genuine Jedit package/report equality. The annotated conditional regression observed RED then GREEN. Please review this exact final head rather than an earlier commit.

Final head e098661 has all hosted CI green, zero unresolved threads and a clean exact-head alternate review. The complete dedicated-target local gate and fresh genuine Jedit package/report equality proof pass. All annotated/unannotated conditional, complete concat-bound and UTF-8 findings have tested fixes and resolved threads. Main241,247 and248 are incorporated through regular merges. Please reconcile the stale verdict through the supported approval workflow.

Correction to the preceding readiness note: a delayed alternate review has now posted two unresolved findings concerning recursive conditional-peer probes and nested contextual literals. Those findings are valid and block merge. The current-head clean response does not override them. I will fix and validate both, obtain final review, and verify zero unresolved threads before merging. The approval command alone is not merge authorization while these findings remain open.

CodeRabbit is the primary review bot. When CodeRabbit is actively reviewing, its

RED/GREEN evidence when behavior changes, and resolve the review thread only
after the fix lands. [REVIEW-REQ-001]

@codex review

Please review final head 3b33a1c. Both delayed findings have source-first RED/GREEN fixes: nested peer probes cannot recursively start new peer probes, and enclosing literal context reaches nested conditional/record peers. The20-level invalid-source deadline timed out before the fix and passes afterward. Authenticated numeric receipt fixtures cover both branch orders plus mapped controls. All24effect+8signature+53recovery tests and the full dedicated-target gate pass. All finding threads are resolved. The earlier e098 clean review does not certify these fixes; please review this exact new head.

Final head 3b33a1c has all hosted CI green, a clean exact-head alternate review and zero unresolved threads verified immediately before this request. The two delayed findings have source-first RED/GREEN fixes: diagnostic peer probes cannot recursively launch new peer probes, and nested integer/record context is retained. All 24 effect, 8 signature and 53 recovery tests pass, followed by full dedicated-target verification and exact-head genuine Jedit package/report byte equality.
