Unbounded package refresh fan-out can overwhelm resource-constrained catalogs. Share a configurable worker limit across refreshes and jitter queued catalog notifications to reduce synchronized request bursts.

Preserve cached packages on interrupted streams, honor cancellation, and report refresh completion. Add concurrency, scheduling, and flag validation tests and document the defaults and unchanged RPC timeout.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added configurable package refresh concurrency with --package-refresh-workers (default: 4; range: 1–128).
    • Added configurable catalog refresh jitter with --catalog-refresh-jitter (default: 0.2; range: 0–1) to spread periodic and follow-up refreshes over time.
    • Package refreshes now run concurrently within the configured limit and respond to cancellation.
    • Invalid refresh settings are rejected before the package server starts.
  • Documentation

    • Documented refresh settings, timing behavior, defaults, and command-line options in the README.

Hi @stevekuznetsov. Thanks for your PR.

I'm waiting for a operator-framework member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work.

Tip

We noticed you've done this a few times! Consider joining the org to skip this step and gain /lgtm and other bot rights. We recommend asking approvers on your previous PRs to sponsor you.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

📝 Walkthrough

The package server adds configurable package refresh concurrency and catalog refresh jitter. It validates CLI values, schedules refreshes through a queue, limits package fetch concurrency, propagates refresh errors, and documents the settings.

E2E failure seems to be some catalog operator flake wrt the ConfigMap, not related to this change. I don't have permission to re-try the job.

Does it matter that we're setting queueinformer.WithDeletionHandler(p.catalogSourceDeleted) on the queue informer (line 184)? From memory I think this is a no-op since we're no longer setting the informer. But from a maintenance perspective, I'm not sure if it could be a source of confusion or catalogSourceDeleted to be called twice if an informer ever gets set there again...thoughts?

the double wg.Wait could be a source of clarity issues. Would it make sense to wrap the for loop in its own function stanza an make the whole thing synchronous returning an error?

Addressed the five review comments in 9c5fd26:

  • Removed the named return from refreshCache; completion logging now uses the explicitly captured result after the refresh finishes.
  • Scoped package processing to a synchronous local function with one deferred wg.Wait(). Started workers drain on stream errors, and failed/canceled refreshes skip garbage collection.
  • Renamed resync to isResync.
  • Removed the inactive queue-informer deletion handler; the explicit informer DeleteFunc handles deletion.
  • Return an error immediately when the CatalogSource type assertion fails.

Added regression coverage for invalid sync input and a package-stream failure with an active worker, verifying worker draining, slot release, and cache preservation.

Validation passed:

  • go test -race ./pkg/package-server/provider
  • make lint GOLANGCI_LINT_ARGS=./pkg/package-server/provider/...
  • git diff --check
