Release Notes

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/block-editor)

v18.1.0

Compare Source

New Features
  • Add useBackgroundProps and getBackgroundClassesAndStyles, and honour background.__experimentalSkipSerialization in the editor (#83943).
Enhancements
  • Inserter: Open faster when many block types are registered (#83446).
  • State control badges: migrate from the private @wordpress/components Badge to @wordpress/ui Badge (#82608).
  • Use the inertValue helper to set inert attributes, for better React 18/19 compatibility (#83871).
  • LinkControl: Add a transformSuggestions prop, so a consumer can filter, order or add to the search suggestions before they are shown (#83652).
  • Block Switcher: Show the pattern previews' focus and hover rings with the design system's outline instead of a legacy box-shadow (#83933).
Bug Fixes
  • Block Mover: Restrict button sizing styles to the mover buttons so visually hidden descriptions do not overflow the block toolbar (#84114).
  • Block inspector: Restore the Settings tab for a block whose only advanced tool is "Allowed blocks" (e.g. a container with allowedBlocks and no anchor), by counting the allowed-blocks fills when deciding whether to show the tab. The control is also now hidden while editing a section (pattern) block, matching the other inspector controls (#84067).
  • Fix the translator comments for the "blocks moved" and "blocks added" screen reader messages, which described the count as a block name (#83555).
  • BlockCompare: Show whitespace differences in the Resolve Block dialog. The markup's spaces and blank lines are kept instead of collapsed by the browser, and each added or removed line break gets a visible marker, so a diff made only of whitespace no longer looks identical on both sides. The dialog also shows the markup of a converted Custom HTML block, which is kept in its innerContent rather than produced by save, instead of an empty diff (#82397).
  • Inserter: Stop re-rendering the block list when the block selection changes while the inserter is open (#83284).
  • Fix style edits applied to a multi-block selection overwriting each block's other styles. Only the changed values are now applied to every selected block, so distinct styles are preserved and resets propagate to the whole selection (#80070).
  • Fix exception thrown by getSelectedBlockStyleState when an undefined clientId is passed as an argument. (#84140)
Internal
  • Apply the disabled state to block binding menu triggers instead of their roots (#83791).

v18.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • InspectorControls: Remove the __experimentalGroup prop from the fill and the slot. It was deprecated in WordPress 6.2 in favour of group, with removal scheduled for 6.4 (#83171).
New Features
  • Add a text shadow block support and its control in the typography panel (#79584).
  • Stabilize getStyleForState and setStyleForState, for reading and writing block style values for a given viewport or pseudo state, and stabilize the getSelectedBlockStyleState and hasSelectedBlockStyleState(renamed from hasSelectedStyleState) store selectors. (#82741).
Enhancements
  • Remove the react-autosize-textarea dependency. PlainText and the block "Edit as HTML" field now auto-grow with CSS field-sizing: content. Browsers without support use scrollable fields. PlainText consumers should use CSS height constraints instead of rows (#64208).
  • BlockCard: Migrate the block-type badge from the private Components Badge to @wordpress/ui Badge. (#82503).
  • Inspector controls in the standard block-supports panels (Typography, Dimensions, Border, Color, Background, Filters) reflect the value a block inherits from Global Styles when nothing is set on the block. The gutenberg-global-styles-inheritance-ui experiment now gates only the indicators for that value: the dotted underline on an inherited label, and the dot that resets a local override (#82840).
  • TypographyPanel: Setting a text color starts an unset link color tracking it whenever no link color is set on the block or inherited from Global Styles. Previously the link color was left alone (#82840).
  • LinkControl, LinkPicker: migrate the link preview badges from the private @wordpress/components Badge to @wordpress/ui Badge (#82684).
  • BlockQuickNavigation: Highlight a block on the canvas while its item is hovered or focused, matching the List View. This affects the inspector Content tab, the pattern overrides panel, and the template and template part content panels (#83049).
  • Inserter and pattern search: rank title matches above keyword and description matches, and rank a word in the title that starts with the search term above a substring match (#83312).
  • ViewportVisibilityInfo: Migrate the block visibility badge from the private @wordpress/components Badge to @wordpress/ui Notice component (#82670).
Bug Fixes
  • BlockAlignmentControl: Hide the control again when none of a block's alignments are available. Paragraph, Heading, List and other blocks that support only wide and full were showing a menu of unavailable options that could not change anything (#83265).
  • Inline images in rich text are selected by clicking them again. A block captures a drag that starts on its own image through the dragstart target instead of the pointer-events: none rule that also kept the image from any click (#83370).
  • RichText: The edit UI of a format follows the active object when the selection moves from one object straight to another, for example from one inline image to the next, so the popover shows the attributes of that object at its position (#83370).
  • FontAppearanceControl: List only the weights inside a variable font's range, reading both ends of the range as whole numbers or as the keywords normal and bold (#83128).
  • LinkControl: Only label pages as the front page or blog home. Posts, terms and media are separate tables and can share an id, so an unscoped search could label a term "Front page" (#83082).
  • InnerBlocks: Resolve a container's legacy layout markup (inherit: true, or a bare contentSize / wideSize with no type) to a constrained layout for its inner blocks, so they are offered the wide and full alignments. Previously only the container's styles honoured the legacy form, and the inner blocks resolved to the flow layout (#82637).
  • Block Patterns, Block Visibility, and Block Lock: Preserve the intended colors of icons converted to strokes. (#82540, #82754)
  • Layout: Treat a missing spacing.blockGap setting as no block gap support, as the server does. A theme that does not opt into block gap has the setting stored as null, which the block settings resolve to undefined, so per-block layout styles applied block gap values the front end never renders. An editor that never provides the setting must set it to true to keep rendering block gap values (#82401).
  • Block Toolbar: Show the parent block selector for blocks inside patterns and contentOnly locked blocks. It selects the nearest parent shown in List View and the breadcrumb (#82912).
  • In-between inserter: Show the inserter between blocks on a wrapped line of a horizontal container, such as the Buttons, Row, Gallery and Navigation blocks (#83276).
  • In-between inserter: Resolve the hovered block through the block refs rather than the container's DOM children, so the inserter also appears in lists whose blocks apply their block props to an inner element, such as Social Icons (#83327).
  • In HEIC-only upload mode, route files to the HEIC conversion by what they contain rather than by the MIME type the browser infers from their name, so a HEIC photo saved as .jpg or .png is no longer handed to a server-side path that cannot convert it either (#81737).
Internal
  • Color/gradient dropdown: replace experimental ZStack overlapping indicators with CSS, use Stack from @wordpress/ui for the toggle row, and use public Tabs instead of the private Components API (#83062).
  • Replace experimental ZStack, HStack, Flex, and FlexItem around the Duotone labeled swatch in the Filters panel (#83061).
  • Remove the crossorigin MutationObserver. Under Document-Isolation-Policy: isolate-and-credentialless cross-origin resources load without the attribute, and adding it broke any resource served without CORS headers (#82614).
  • Block bindings and variation transforms: Use the public Menu from @wordpress/ui instead of the private Components API. (#81925)
  • Layout hooks: Use normalizeLegacyLayout in useLayoutClasses, useLayoutStyles, the block layout styles wrapper and isAxialBlockGapAllowed, replacing four inline copies of the legacy inherit / size check (#82710).
  • Extract the populated pattern category computation from usePatternCategories into a getPopulatedCategories util, and expose it and searchItems through private APIs for reuse by the start page options modal (#81396).
  • Inserter: Minor performance optimization when sorting items by frecency (#83443).

v36.1.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • lint-js: Allow unit-test titles passed through variables (#83995).
Bug Fixes
  • Add the stylelint-scss dependency, a peer of @wordpress/stylelint-config (#83765).
  • build, start and lint-pkg-json: Resolve the default browserslist and npm-package-json-lint configs when dependencies are not hoisted to the project root (npm install-strategy=linked, pnpm). lint-pkg-json now defaults to config/npmpackagejsonlint.js; config/npmpackagejsonlint.json stays for projects that reference it (#83902).
  • lint-js, lint-style and lint-md-docs: a file passed right after --fix is now treated as a file instead of that flag's value, so only the listed files get processed. Same for --require-pragma in format (#83521).

v36.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Switch test-unit-js to consumer-installed Vitest 5 and Vite 7/8 at the 36.0.0 boundary. Run once by default, discover consumer Vitest/Vite config, and use Vitest lint defaults for test/spec files. Keep test-unit-jest as a maintenance-only adapter for consumer-installed Jest, with no scheduled removal. Remove the bundled Jest dependencies, preset config, Babel transformer, and GitHub Actions reporter. Retire the Jest preset and console package source; published versions remain available. Jest projects must install their own dependencies and configure the published preset if needed. See the migration guide. (#82843).

  • Require Node.js ^22.22.2 || ^24.15.0 || >=26.0.0 and update the bundled markdownlint-cli from ^0.31.1 to ^0.49.1, which moves markdownlint from 0.25 to 0.41. lint-md-docs now runs the rules added since then (MD051 through MD060) by default, so projects may see new reports. The header rule aliases (for example header-increment) no longer work in configuration files; use the heading names (#81917).

  • lint-style: Use stylelint's resolveConfig for config detection instead of a static extension list, supporting all current and future config file formats without manual maintenance overhead. Note that resolveConfig also searches ancestor directories and the global config directory (~/.config/stylelint), so a project with no local config may now pick up an unrelated config found there instead of the bundled default (#79280).

Enhancements
  • check-engines: Check only the tools listed in engines, instead of always passing --node and --npm. Without an engines field in the project, it now checks only the Node.js version (#83326).
  • lint-md-docs: Detect .markdownlint.jsonc so the bundled default config is not used when one is present (#81917).
  • format: Format .cjs and .mjs files when expanding a directory (#82731).
  • format: Format .cts and .mts files when expanding a directory (#83071).
  • The default ESLint config now lints .jsx, .ts, .tsx, .mts and .cts files, which ESLint's own file discovery skips (#83071).
  • build and start: Discover .cjs, .cts and .mts entry points, resolve them from extensionless imports, and transpile .cjs and .cts modules (#83071).
  • The bundled wp-prettier dependency has been upgraded from 3.0.3 to 3.9.6 (#82731).
Bug Fixes
  • Update the bundled webpack to ^5.111.0, which fixes a code-generation regression in webpack 5.110.3 that can make production bundles fail at startup (#82698).
