Description

Fixes the bugs in llmessage's and llcorehttp's own tests that the Catch2 conversion in #455 found and kept, since a conversion must not change what a test does. Each was a test that could not fail for the reason it existed, checked something other than what it said, read memory it had not checked, or leaked. None of the corrected tests found a bug in the code they test; a few things in production code noticed on the way are listed below, unchanged.

It stacks on #455 (rye/tests-tm19) and changes only test files and the llcorehttp tests' Python peer.

llmessage: data packing and message builders (f71a0fa)

  • lldatapacker:
    • a 23-bit fixed-point round trip was compared within 31 bits, where 1 << 31 overflows to a negative tolerance that passes anything;
    • assignBuffer was given sizeof a pointer for its sizes, leaked its second buffer, and was checked for a rewind with nothing to rewind;
    • the four binary round trips never checked the size read back, and ran strlen over uninitialised stack when an unpack came up short.
  • llnamevalue: a value built and never checked, and the read-only VEC3 case calling setVec3 on the F32 value.
  • lltemplatemessagebuilder:
    • the "string past the end" case filled the wire buffer instead of the output it then checked;
    • an oversized string was indexed before its size was checked;
    • both quaternion round trips used the identity. They use one radian, to a tolerance, since w is recovered from x, y and z;
    • three cases checked nothing;
    • two cases leaked a template's blocks.
  • llsdmessagebuilder:
    • binary cases packed and compared half or a quarter of their arrays, and the S16 array case compared half its bytes;
    • six guards checked size > 0 before reading N bytes;
    • a commented-out case is restored;
    • a w = 0 quaternion could not show w was recovered;
    • the fixtures leaked.

llmessage: io, buffers, nodes, dispatcher, coprocedures (ca1d992)

  • io and llbuffer:
    • segment iterators were dereferenced with no check against endSegment();
    • one terminator was written a byte past a full buffer, and a line reader ran strchr over unterminated bytes;
    • comments said the opposite of their checks, here and in llxorcipher.
  • llhttpnode: a node addNode refuses was leaked.
  • lltemplatemessagedispatcher:
    • every case made its dispatcher over a null reader. The fixture owns a real one, whose other members are stubbed beside the two the file already stubbed;
    • one case could pass on data an earlier case left behind.
  • message_test: Response::mStatus was never initialised.
  • llcoproceduremanager:
    • two cases only exercised boost::fibers channels, with no assertion, and are removed;
    • a third, a sketch of the pool's worker over a bare channel, now checks that a pool runs more coprocedures than it has coroutines.

llcorehttp (a4623f5)

  • httpstatus: status1 assigned twice where status2 was meant.
  • bufferarray: a guard byte checked one byte late.
  • bufferstream:
    • the pbackfail expectation contradicted its message. It stays, with the reason it holds, and a new check shows a put-back that succeeds;
    • two construction cases checked nothing; they check the reference held on the BufferArray.
  • refcounted: the noRef case leaked its object.
  • httprequest:
    • the disallowed X-Reflect-transfer_encoding could never match, since the peer reflects headers with hyphens;
    • the byte-range case sent no Range header;
    • the 503 case stopped one short of the peer's seven Retry-After answers. It now asks for all seven, checks each was retried once, and checks that Retry-After: 2 held its retry back two seconds.
  • test_llcorehttp_peer.py: an unknown /503/ path wrote a str to the socket, which Python 3 refuses.

Checklist

  • I have provided a clear title and detailed description for this pull request.
  • If useful, I have included media such as screenshots and video to show off my changes.
  • I have tested the changes locally and verified they work as intended.
  • All new and existing tests pass.
  • Code follows the project's style guidelines.
  • Documentation has been updated if needed.
  • Any dependent changes have been merged and published in downstream modules.
  • I have reviewed the contributing guidelines.

Additional Notes

  • Tested on macOS arm64, RelWithDebInfo, on Test framework, stage 3: llmessage's and llcorehttp's tests in Catch2 #455's head (ccf8e19):
    • every entry of TM19's five binaries passes, and so do the two combined runs;
    • each binary passes 10 random orders and 20 repeats, with no state guard report;
    • clang finds no unused internal member in the changed files;
    • assertions changed only where described, for example: lldatapacker 85 → 91, io 115 → 123, httprequest 268 → 296, and llsdmessagebuilder 55 → 51, where six guards fold into the comparisons after them.
  • Each new or corrected check fails when it should. All 48 were run under a small change to the test's own input or expected value; each failed, nothing else did, and each change was reverted.
  • Merge order: this should follow Test framework, stage 3: llmessage's and llcorehttp's tests in Catch2 #455. Once Test framework, stage 3: llmessage's and llcorehttp's tests in Catch2 #455 merges, its base becomes develop.
  • Not changed here, found on the way, all in production code:
    • LLBufferArray::splitAfter skips the split when address == base + size, which getSegment never returns. Splitting after a segment's last byte therefore inserts the zero-length segment its comment says it avoids.
    • BufferArrayStreamBuf::seekoff(0, end, in) clamps to the last byte, not past it, so a read after seekg(end) returns that byte rather than EOF. Nothing in the viewer seeks one.
    • HTTP_RETRY_BACKOFF_MAX_DEFAULT is commented "5 sec" but is 50 seconds. The 20-second ceiling hides it.
    • LLDataPackerAsciiBuffer::unpackBinaryData takes its size from the data, capped only by the caller's, while walking a 512-byte line buffer three characters a byte.
    • LLHTTPRegistrar::buildAllServices leaks the node it built for a path that already has one.

…y check

- lldatapacker:
  - the 23-bit packFixed round trip was compared within 31 bits, and
    1 << 31 overflows to a negative tolerance that passed any
    difference. It is compared within the 23 bits it was packed with;
  - assignBuffer's sizes were sizeof a pointer, so arbitrary, and its
    second buffer leaked. Both are sized from their arrays, and a
    unique_ptr holds the one the packer does not delete;
  - both assignBuffer cases checked a rewind with nothing to rewind.
    Each packs a value first and checks the cursor moved;
  - the four binary round trips never checked the size read back. Each
    does, and their unpack buffers start zeroed, so a short or failed
    unpack no longer runs strlen over the stack. So does operator='s
    target.
- llnamevalue: a SIM value was built in the default-constructor case
  and never checked; the string-constructor case checks it. The case
  showing a read-only VEC3 ignores setVec3 called setVec3 on the F32
  value.
- lltemplatemessagebuilder:
  - the case for a string past the end of the data filled the wire
    buffer with 0xcc and never the output, so it could not show the
    output emptied. It fills the output;
  - an oversized string was indexed before its size was checked;
  - both quaternion round trips used angle 0, the identity. They use
    one radian, compared to a tolerance, since w is recovered from the
    other three;
  - copyToBuilder's case and two cases of a block with no variables
    checked nothing. Each reads back what it built;
  - two cases copied a fresh template over one that owned its blocks,
    leaking them; a few readers and builders a failed REQUIRE would
    leak are unique_ptrs.
- llsdmessagebuilder:
  - the data_size 2 and 4 cases packed and compared half and a quarter
    of their arrays, and the S16 array case compared half its bytes.
    They pack and compare the whole arrays;
  - six guards checked size > 0 before reading N bytes. The comparisons
    take the vector's own size, so a short one fails instead of reading
    past it;
  - the data_size 1 case was commented out. It checks that bytes with
    no closing NUL stay binary;
  - the quaternion case used w = 0, which any w unpacks the same as. It
    uses one radian;
  - the fixtures' legacy message and block, and three template
    builders, leaked. The fixture owns the message, which owns the
    block, and the builders are unique_ptrs;
  - the case for a builder making a reader checked nothing. It checks
    the block arrives.

Each new or corrected check was shown to fail under a small change to the
test's own input or expected value. lldatapacker_test passes 91
assertions (85 before), llnamevalue_test 142 (137),
lltemplatemessagebuilder_test 297 (294) and llsdmessagebuilder_test 51
(55: six guards fold into the comparisons after them, and two checks are
new).

…ver checked

- io and llbuffer:
  - segment iterators were dereferenced from beginSegment() and after
    ++ with no check against endSegment(). Each is REQUIREd first;
  - the seekp case wrote a terminator at buf[actual_len], one past the
    array when the read filled it. It builds the string from the
    length;
  - the line reader ran strchr over a buffer with no terminator,
    dereferenced its result unchecked and wrote a terminator after the
    newline. It looks for the newline among the bytes read and REQUIREs
    it;
  - llbuffer's takeContents case compared a buffer that a short read
    would leave unterminated; the length read is REQUIREd first;
  - comments said a request would fail above a check that it succeeds,
    and gave the wrong reason for a refusal.
- llxorcipher: a comment said the decrypted data differs from the
  original above the check that it is the same.
- llhttpnode: the node addNode refuses for a path already taken was
  leaked. A unique_ptr holds it, and a new check shows it was refused.
- lltemplatemessagedispatcher: every case made its dispatcher over a
  reference through a null pointer. The fixture owns a real reader,
  whose remaining members are stubbed, since the binary stubs the two
  the dispatcher calls. The fixture also clears the dispatched data, on
  which the pass-through case could otherwise pass whatever an earlier
  case left there.
- message_test: Response::mStatus was never initialised, so the status
  check read an indeterminate value until status() was called.
- llcoproceduremanager: two cases only showed boost::fibers channels
  passing a function, with no assertion, and are gone. A third was a
  prototype of the pool's worker over a bare channel; it now checks
  that a pool runs every one of twelve coprocedures, more than its
  coroutines.
- Two files' @file and @brief lines named other tests.

Each new or corrected check was shown to fail under a small change to the
test's own input or expected value. io_test passes 123 assertions (115
before), llbuffer_test 41 (38), llhttpnode_test 92 (91), and
llcoproceduremanager_test 2 in 2 cases (2 in 4).

- httpstatus: the case for distinct statuses comparing unequal assigned
  status1 twice where it meant status2, so its error half compared an
  error with the earlier success.
- bufferarray: a guard byte was checked one past the first byte the
  read left alone. Two comments described seeks the cases do not do.
- bufferstream:
  - pbackfail('!') after a seek to the end was expected to fail under a
    message that said it succeeds. A comment says why it fails: the
    seek leaves the read position on the '!'. A new check puts back the
    'a' before it;
  - the two construction cases checked nothing. They check the
    reference a stream or its buffer holds on the BufferArray;
  - comments spoke of releasing references on objects that are not
    reference counted.
- refcounted: the noRef case leaked its object, which no longer counts
  references and so cannot be released. It lives on the stack. Comments
  copied from earlier cases are corrected.
- httprequest:
  - the POST's disallowed header was spelled X-Reflect-transfer_encoding,
    which the peer never sends, so it could never match. It is spelled
    with a hyphen;
  - the byte-range case asked for offset 0 and length 0, which sends no
    Range header. It asks for 25 bytes at 100 and requires the peer to
    have seen the Range header;
  - the 503 case asked for /503/0/ to /503/5/, short of the peer's
    seventh Retry-After. It asks for all seven, checks each was retried
    once as a 503, and that "Retry-After: 2" held its retry back two
    seconds;
  - comments copied from other cases are corrected.
- test_llcorehttp_peer.py: its answer to an unknown /503/ path wrote a
  str where Python 3 needs bytes, so the handler raised after sending
  its headers. Its docstring named a BUG-2295 path the code does not
  match.

Each new or corrected check was shown to fail under a small change to the
test's own input or expected value. bufferstream_test passes 34
assertions (30 before) and httprequest_test 296 (268), in the same time
as before: the 503 case already waited the two seconds /503/0/ asks for.

Add coverage for the default retry backoff.

The test verifies the two-second Retry-After delay for /503/0/, but it does not verify that malformed Retry-After values use the default one-second backoff. A regression that applies the two-second delay to every URL can pass.

Add an upper-bound check for a URL such as /503/5/. Keep the bound below two seconds with sufficient margin for normal scheduling and request overhead. This is a coverage gap, not evidence that the existing lower-bound check is flaky under load.

Extend the retry timing test around the existing `/503/0/` assertion to cover a
malformed `Retry-After` response such as `/503/5/`. Assert that its retry delay
stays below two seconds with enough margin for normal scheduling and request
overhead, while retaining the existing two-second lower-bound check for
`/503/0/`.
