Why

Reproducible tested Rust plus locked quality commands; equivalent parser cleanup; opt-in nonmutating hook. Seven compatible Linux jobs/matrix legs move to Boat; tokenless npm publish stays GitHub-hosted. Original job/artifact identities, provenance/OIDC and native legs remain.

Scope

Preserve existing trust, native platform and publishing contracts. No workflow is manually dispatched.

Verification

Pinned Rust formatting, locked Clippy and tests passed in Linux; TUI typecheck, hook fixtures and real pre-push passed. Static runner and OIDC checks passed. Native release targets, TUI CLI-dependent contract tests and npm postinstall tests remain unqualified.

Release note: Reproducible tested Rust plus locked quality commands; equivalent parser cleanup; opt-in nonmutating hook. Seven compatible Linux jobs/matrix legs move to Boat; tokenless npm publish stays GitHub-hosted. Original job/artifact identities, provenance/OIDC and native legs remain.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Developer Tools
    • Added an optional pre-push hook that checks eligible changes before they are pushed and skips source checks for deletion-only pushes. Added a guarded installer and automated tests for hook behavior.
  • Build and Release
    • CI and release workflows now use updated runner settings and a pinned Rust toolchain. Key build and test commands use locked dependencies for more consistent results.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded CI guidance with hook setup and behavior, toolchain requirements, and release-check details.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved error propagation when parsing malformed event records.

Walkthrough

This change adds an opt-in pre-push hook, its installer, and tests. It pins the Rust toolchain, updates CI and release runners and commands, documents the checks, and simplifies event parse error propagation.

Changes

Local pre-push checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pre-push validation
.githooks/pre-push, docs/ci-checks.md
The hook validates pushed refs, skips checks for deletion-only pushes, checks the working tree and required tools, and runs Rust formatting, Clippy, and Bun typechecking.
Hook installation and validation tests
scripts/install-git-hooks.sh, scripts/test-git-hooks.py, docs/ci-checks.md
The installer refuses conflicting hook configurations before setting the repository-local hooks path. Tests cover hook outcomes, installer behavior, and Git environment cases.

CI runner and toolchain baseline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Locked CI commands and Rust baseline
rust-toolchain.toml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, src/store/events.rs, docs/ci-checks.md
The Rust toolchain is pinned to 1.97.1, CI commands use --locked, and event parse errors propagate directly. The documentation records these baseline settings.
Runner and release workflow updates
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/npm-publish.yml, .github/workflows/release-from-package.yml, .github/workflows/release-please.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml, docs/ci-checks.md
Compatible Linux CI and release jobs use the Boat runner. Release workflow Rust setup pins version 1.97.1 and a specific action revision. Documentation records runner and release-gate settings.

Pull request CI now runs on the custom boat runner without any fork guard in the workflow. Confirm that the runner is ephemeral and that its policy blocks untrusted fork pull requests, or add a fork guard, before merging. The remaining findings are minor test-hardening items.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "ci(checks): pin Rust and harden local validation" matches the main changes. The PR pins the Rust toolchain to 1.97.1 in rust-toolchain.toml and in the release and CI workflows. It adds --locked to CI commands and a pre-push hook. The title is concise, specific, and conveys the primary change. It does not cover the runner move to Boat or the parser cleanup, which is expected for a title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the purpose, scope, and verification of the change. It names the Rust pinning, locked Clippy and tests, the opt-in nonmutating hook, the move of Linux jobs to the Boat runner, and the parser cleanup. It also states which native and publishing contracts stay unchanged. It is directly related to the changeset.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 3 files. (8 skipped: 8 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Keep untrusted pull request jobs off boat.

These jobs run on pull_request and now request boat. The repository does not define boat. Its documentation treats boat as a runner that is separate from GitHub-hosted runners. The workflow has no fork guard. A fork pull request can therefore run checkout, Cargo, Bun, and npm commands on a boat machine. If that machine is self-hosted or persistent, fork code can run on infrastructure that is not isolated. Runner-group policy is not visible in this repository, so it does not remove this risk from the workflow.

Choose one of these options:

  • Limit the boat jobs to trusted events. For example, skip fork pull requests in these jobs.
  • Keep fork pull request checks on GitHub-hosted runners.

Record Rust command options in the stub.

The stub records only $4, so the passing assertions cannot detect removal of --offline, --locked, or -- --check from the hook. Record the full command arguments and assert the required options. This protects the locked, offline behavior that these fixtures are meant to validate.

Isolate Git configuration in the fixtures.

If a developer sets a global core.hooksPath, the fixture inherits it. After test_installer_idempotent_and_refuses_existing_config_or_hook removes its local override, the installer still sees the global value and fails its expected success assertion. Give the fixture subprocesses an isolated Git configuration environment, including installer calls. Git permits core.hooksPath in global configuration. (git-scm.com)
