Merge the following versions of the moby/buildkit:

The moby/buildkit has undergone heavy refactoring in newer versions. When merging the code, the goal was to avoid future conflicts as much as possible.

Warning! This is a set of interdependent PRs and requires sequential merging due to squashed merges (fsutil -> buildkit -> earthbuild).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • File exports can now report overall transfer progress and per-file activity.
    • Exported image details are available to downstream build workflows.
  • Bug Fixes

    • File transfers handle platform-specific paths more consistently and can replace existing destinations when needed.
    • Special mounts no longer create unnecessary input dependencies, improving build caching.
    • Build and integration-test behavior is more consistent across export types and runtime environments.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update vendored fsutil behavior, Earthly export file synchronization, gRPC configuration, solver and exporter handling, and Linux runc stats output. They also revise build and test support and make smaller dependency, configuration, and code updates.

Changes: Vendored fsutil

Layer / File(s) Summary
Copy replacement and mode handling
vendor/github.com/tonistiigi/fsutil/copy/*
Copy operations can replace existing destinations of a different type when enabled. Platform copy paths change mode-bit handling, and Darwin falls back to content copying for cross-device clone errors.
Path portability and traversal
vendor/github.com/tonistiigi/fsutil/diff_containerd.go, filter.go, followlinks.go, stat.go, validator.go
Path construction and validation use platform-aware filepath operations. Walk tracks skipped parents, and stat paths use platform-specific separators.
Filesystem send and receive
vendor/github.com/tonistiigi/fsutil/send.go, receive.go
Send wraps filesystems with hardlink reset, synchronizes progress updates, and normalizes transmitted paths. Receive reports progress for STAT packets when configured.
Build and module setup
vendor/github.com/tonistiigi/fsutil/*, vendor/modules.txt, go.mod
The fsutil replacement points to the EarthBuild fork. Its test images and bake targets add coverage outputs, and its lint, ignore, Codecov, and README files are updated.

Earthly export file synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export callback contract and routing
client/solve.go, session/filesync/filesync.go, session/localhost/localhost.go
Export entries provide progress and file-receipt callbacks. File-sync targets store callbacks by exporter ID and pass them to directory sync.

gRPC configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server, session, and dependency configuration
cmd/buildkitd/main.go, frontend/gateway/gateway.go, session/grpc.go, session/session.go, go.mod, vendor/modules.txt
BuildKit, gateway, and session servers configure message limits and interceptors. Startup applies the configured platform cache age. Middleware dependency metadata changes.
Client message-size options
frontend/gateway/grpcclient/client.go
The gateway gRPC client uses default maximum message sizes instead of fixed 16 MiB limits. Existing flow-control window settings remain.

Solver, cache, and exporter behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remote-cache descriptor validation
cache/remotecache/v1/chains.go, cache/remotecache/v1/utils.go
The optional descriptor-check interface and provider method are removed. Remote-cache marshaling checks descriptors through provider information calls when a provider is present.
Earthly exporter integration
exporter/earthlyoutputs/export.go, solver/llbsolver/solver.go, solver/llbsolver/earthly_exporters_test.go
The image exporter stores and exposes resolved attributes and its exporter type. Platform validation is bypassed only for a nonempty list of Earthly exporters. Tests cover the exporter cases.
Solver execution and state updates
solver/jobs.go, solver/llbsolver/bridge.go, solver/llbsolver/ops/exec.go, solver/llbsolver/ops/earthly_exec_mounts_test.go, solver/scheduler.go, exporter/earthlyoutputs/registry/eodriver/multimultiprovider.go
Special mounts are excluded from input dependency processing. Vertex reuse records its digest, exporter lookup uses the caller's context, and missing-edge logs use structured fields. Local execution helpers drop unused arguments.

Runc stats output

Layer / File(s) Summary
Linux stats encoding and validation
executor/runcexecutor/monitor_stats.go, monitor_stats_test.go
The Linux stats writer emits one versioned, length-prefixed JSON buffer per write. Tests verify the protocol header, payload length, decoded metrics, and writer errors.

Build, tests, and smaller updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Test tooling and registration
Dockerfile, client/client_test.go, frontend/dockerfile/dockerfile_test.go
The gotestsum stage pins gocovmerge and the integration-test image copies its full output directory. Test registrations and Dockerfile cases remove conflict artifacts and update cache checks.
Registry proxy request tests
api/services/registry/proxy_test.go
Proxy tests construct requests explicitly and check construction errors. The POST test sets its content type, and tunnel cleanup supplies a cancellation cause.
Dependencies, configuration, and code adjustments
go.mod, .coderabbit.yaml, AGENTS.md, client/client.go, client/llb/exec.go, frontend/gateway/container/container.go, executor/runcexecutor/executor_linux.go, exporter/earthlyoutputs/export.go, exporter/earthlyoutputs/registry/eodriver/multimultiprovider.go, session/localhost/localhost.go, solver/jobs.go, util/*, worker/runc/runc.go
Dependency versions and error definitions change. The loong64 binary payload is replaced. Other edits update review filters, naming guidance, comments, and logging.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3cc7d

Mixed Earthly and non-Earthly exports will fail platform validation, contrary to the intended behavior. Fix the condition and the accompanying test before merging. Earlier open concerns about progress accounting, filtered-copy replacement and the file callback timing also remain unresolved.

There is anticipated to be at least some occurences of earthly in the source code due to backwards compatibility with config files and language constructs.

Remove the duplicate progress increment.

When progressCb is set, updateProgress adds size at Line 119 and again at Line 123. Each update reports twice its actual size. Remove the second addition; the existing s.mu protects progressCurrent.

Remove the duplicate progressCurrent increment from the updateProgress flow,
keeping the existing increment and s.mu protection so each progress update

Report files after receipt, not from the filter.

When onFile runs here, the destination file may not exist yet. The vendored fsutil code calls the filter before it creates the file or requests its data. A callback that opens the reported file can fail, and a failed transfer can still report the file as received. Invoke onFile after successful file completion instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the Earthly bypass for mixed exports.

If a request contains Earthly and another exporter, onlyEarthBuild becomes false. CheckInvalidPlatforms then rejects an EarthBuild result with named references and no platform mapping before either exporter runs. The earlier review established that the bypass must apply when any exporter is Earthly. Change this condition and the mixed-export expectation in solver/llbsolver/earthly_exporters_test.go together.
