fix(remotecache): make cache-export loop detection linear and cancellable - #44

…able
checkLoops walked the normalized cache graph with only the current DFS
path in its visited set and never remembered fully explored nodes, so
it enumerated every root-to-leaf path. That is exponential in the
number of fan-in "diamonds" (A -> {B, C} -> D) in the graph: each extra
diamond doubles the work. On large build graphs with many FROM /
COPY --from fan-ins, "preparing build cache for export" never finishes.
Nothing on that path checked the context either, and ExportTo turned a
child's context error into an empty result, so a disconnected or
cancelled client could not stop the export. Stuck exports kept a core
busy each and accumulated until the daemon ran out of memory.
- remember fully explored nodes in checkLoops (three-colour DFS), so
loop removal visits each node and edge once
- check ctx in normalize and checkLoops, and return its error
- return the context error from ExportTo instead of nil, nil when the
context is done; other child errors are still skipped as before
Upstream moby/buildkit removed this normalization code entirely in
2d7ef04 ("remotecache: refactor to new cache export interface",
moby/buildkit#6129, v0.25.0). That refactor needs Go 1.23 (`unique`),
containerd v2 and a series of follow-up fixes, so it is not backported
here.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughCache graph normalization now checks for cancellation and propagates loop-detection errors. Loop detection skips completed subtrees. Dependency export returns context errors from both dependency-export error paths. ChangesRemote cache export
Priority: ⬆️ High Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: High Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change makes cache-export loop detection linear and stops normalization when the client cancels. One normalization pass over a large graph can still run to completion after cancellation, which delays shutdown without causing an incorrect export or a failure. Check cancellation during recursive normalization.
normalizeItem memoizes completed items, so repeated references do not cause repeated full traversal. However, if cancellation occurs during the first traversal of a large graph, normalizeItem can continue through that graph because it has no context check. Pass ctx into normalizeItem and check it during recursive traversal.

@janishorsts this one is a bug fix for a bug we're hitting at The effect is that the buildkit instance spins indefinitely (or until OOM kill). Can keep some large/expensive machines running so a rather nasty bug IMO. Current work-around is simply to disable cache, which is unfortunate. It is fixed upstream but not until What do you think? Fine to fix now or do you anticipate rejoining the upstream soonish? |

@kmannislands, let's see how quickly we can do incremental BuildKit bumps. Let's decide after 2-3 BuildKit merges. I have a good feel for it. The bump to v0.14.1 will be ready today. I have a final minor issue to tackle. |
Fixes EarthBuild/earthbuild#1029.
Problem
Before a remote cache export,
CacheChains.Marshalcallsnormalize, which removes loops from the cache graph withnormalizeState.checkLoops. That DFS keeps only the current path invisitedand deletes each node again on the way out. Nodes that have been fully explored are never remembered, so it walks every root-to-leaf path. The cost is exponential in the number of fan-in diamonds (A → {B, C} → D). On large Earthfile graphs, "preparing build cache for export" never finishes.Nothing on that path checks
ctxeither.ExportToalso turns a child'scontext.Canceledintonil, nil, so a cancelled or disconnected client cannot stop the export. Stuck exports accumulate at about one core each until the daemon is OOM-killed. The issue has the details: the goroutine dump, the scaling numbers, and affected versions (every release from v0.6.30 through v0.8.19, andmain).Change
cache/remotecache/v1/utils.go:checkLoopsnow keeps adoneset of fully explored digests and skips them. This is the standard three-colour DFS. A loop is an edge to a node on the current path (visited, as before). An edge to adonenode is a cross or forward edge, so it can't close a loop, and the subtree behind it has already had its back edges removed. The result is still a DAG, and each node and edge is visited once.removeLoops/checkLoopsnow takectxinto account and return its error.cache/remotecache/v1/chains.go:normalizechecksctxbetween items and propagates theremoveLoopserror.solver/exporter.go: when a childExportTofails andctxis done, return the context error instead ofnil, nil. Every other child error is still skipped exactly as before. Upstream deliberately keeps skipping subbranch errors (moby/buildkit 77aa49d), so this change is limited to cancellation. Why not backport upstream?
Upstream removed this code entirely in moby/buildkit#6129 (
2d7ef04df"remotecache: refactor to new cache export interface", v0.25.0). I tried cherry-picking it ontomainfirst:chains.go,utils.go,solver/exporter.go,solver/types.go,solver/llbsolver/provenance.go,solver/scheduler_test.go,go.mod). That's 24 intervening upstream commits on those files since the fork's 2023-11 merge base.unique(Go 1.23) and containerd v2 import paths. The fork isgo 1.20with containerd 1.7.a12ea755c,846a4ccd1,6c0aa8c8f,051818cf3,e4ee7622d,292043fca,99c6887dd,77aa49d06,224061dff,e7050b9ea, ...). A partial backport would carry the bugs those fixed. That is a buildkit rebase, not a bug fix. This PR is the smallest change that fixes the complexity and the cancellation gap, and it will disappear when the fork is rebased past v0.25. moby/buildkit#6082 was an earlier, different attempt: it dropped
delete(visited, d)entirely, which would wrongly remove cross edges as if they were loops. It was closed in favour of #6129.Divergence from moby master in the touched files (
utils.go,chains.go,chains_test.go,exporter.go):moby/master2d7ef04df^(last upstream with this code)That is +127 lines: 102 of them are tests, and non-test code is +35 / −8.
Tests
New tests in
cache/remotecache/v1/chains_test.go:TestMarshalDiamondChain:Marshalof 1000 chained diamonds (3001 records, 2^1000 paths) must finish within 30s. It takes about 10 ms with the fix and times out without it.TestMarshalCanceled:Marshalwith a cancelled context returnscontext.Canceled. Without the fix it returns no error.TestMarshalLoop: a loop created by deduplication duringnormalizesits behind a diamond, so its nodes are reached twice. The test checks the loop is still broken and the exported records form a DAG. It overflows the stack if loop removal is disabled, which confirms it exercisesremoveLoops.Run in
golang:1.21(the CI Go version) on linux/arm64:go test -mod=vendor ./cache/remotecache/...: pass. The new tests also pass with-count=50and with-race.go test -mod=vendor ./solver/...: everything passes exceptTestJobsIntegration, which fails identically onmainwithmissing requirements(it needs the integration sandbox).go test -mod=vendor ./solver/ -skip TestJobsIntegration -count=3: pass.-raceon./solver/: pre-existing data races in the scheduler tests fail about 30 tests onmainboth with and without this change. The failing sets are flaky but overlap; nothing new.go vet ./cache/remotecache/v1/ ./solver/: clean.I haven't run an end-to-end
