Adds FORK-REVIEW.md: a review of what our fork adds on top of moby/buildkit, aimed at cutting maintenance burden by carrying fewer lines and leaning on upstream features where possible.

Two commits:

  1. d865055 — the original review, verbatim. It was written against the abandoned merge-in-buildkit-all-at-once branch (upstream fa19659f). Its bug catalog ended at B7, so references to B14/B18/B31 were dangling.
  2. b7d09d6 — rewrite against earthbuild/main (5fe7531), the in-flight v0.14.1 merge (chore: update buildkit to v0.14.1 #41) and upstream v0.34.1, for the new strategy of merging one upstream minor release at a time.

What changed in the rewrite:

  • Foreword and baseline. States the purpose and the merge strategy, plus fork delta numbers: about 6.4k hand-written lines; about 43k vendored lines, almost all docker/distribution for the embedded registry.
  • Min upstream / act at on every suggestion. Each "use upstream X" item gives the first upstream release that has X, and whether to act now or at a given merge step.
  • §5 per-release checklist (v0.14 → v0.34): what to drop, adapt or watch at each merge.
  • Corrections:
  • New items: D11–D21 (including socketforward → upstream sshforward, about 470 lines; consumer-side replacements for RLIMIT, the session timeout interceptor and dockerui; CI/Dockerfile convergence), M3–M5, B8–B10.
  • Live bugs on main worth fixing now: B7 (prune deadlock, [H]), B6 (healthcheck kills the session on the first slow probe), B1 (needs a product decision).

Caveats:

  • B8 and B9 are reconstructed from the code, since the original text for them was lost.
  • The ~900–1,000-line §2b savings total is an estimate.
  • Line refs are against earthbuild/main @5fe7531de, or chore: update buildkit to v0.14.1 #41 @2fc50e525 where marked.

Snapshot of the original review of merge-in-buildkit-all-at-once, kept
verbatim before updating it for the per-minor-release merge strategy.

Rebase the review on earthbuild/main (5fe7531) and the in-flight
v0.14.1 merge (#41) instead of the abandoned all-at-once branch. Add a
foreword on the goal (fewer fork lines, lean on upstream), a min
upstream version / act-at for every replace-with-upstream suggestion,
newly found items (D11-D21, M3-M5, B8-B10), a per-release merge
checklist, and corrections to stale or wrong claims.

Note that the goal is not to reach 0.
There is anticipated to be at least some occurences of earthly in the source code due to backwards compatibility with config files and language constructs.

Comment thread FORK-REVIEW.md
| D6 | `grpc_retry` dial opts `client/client.go:51-52` (+ `go-grpc-middleware` server chaining) | Retry opts are dead (no retry interceptor installed; consumer doesn't use it). Server chaining on main is upstream's own code; upstream went native in c3105e49d (v0.14.0), so on #41 `client/client.go:51-52` is the **last** user of go-grpc-middleware. Delete → drops dep + 3 vendored pkgs. | v0.14.0 → **in #41** |
| D7 | `util/entitlements/security/security_linux.go:37-42` device-cgroup rule | Semantically identical to upstream (empty `Type` = `a` = c+b); only under `security.insecure`. Revert to upstream text to shrink diff. | **now** |
| D8 | ~~`util/bklog/log.go` trace-ID gate~~ | **Claim was wrong**: `EnableLogWithTraceID` is upstream code, called on main (`util/tracing/detect/detect.go:98`). Uncalled in upstream v0.14–v0.15 (228e250d7) — upstream behaviour, not ours. Gate deleted upstream in 366c355fd (v0.16.0). Only fork delta is `version`/`revision` fields (`log.go:8,54-59`) → keep (§2a). | take upstream at **v0.16 merge** |
| D9 | ~~`os.Setenv("GRPC_ENFORCE_ALPN_ENABLED","false")` in buildkitd main~~ | **Not on main or #41** — only on the abandoned all-at-once branch. ALPN enforcement arrives with grpc ≥1.67, first vendored upstream in v0.19.0 (grpc 1.68.1). If ALPN must be off then, set it in the container env/entrypoint or a blank-imported init pkg (as `earthbuild/cmd/earth/disable_alpn`), never in `main()` (grpc reads it at package init). | guidance for **v0.19 merge** |

Align the module baseline with context.WithTimeoutCause.

context.WithTimeoutCause requires Go 1.21. The pinned baseline already uses this API, and its CI already runs Go 1.21. D14 does not require a new CI change, but go.mod must not continue to declare Go 1.20.

Suggested fix

+go 1.21
