Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The new export coordination can, in some parallel BUILD orderings, leave a target without a completion status. Separately, runs with --debug may print registry or URL credentials contained in an operation name when a malformed stats packet arrives. Both fixes are small and should be made before merging. Settle wait-block exports before the owning wait starts.
Parallel conversion starts BUILD processing asynchronously. Earthfile2LLB waits opt.waitBlock before it waits for the shared error group. An already visited target attaches its wait items only after sts.Done() returns. The block can therefore snapshot its items before the attachment.
A later Wait can short-circuit after called is set, so saveImages may never settle export.waitBlockItem.exported. FinalizeStates only chains endExecution to that result. The target can then miss its completion status.
Ensure that all parallel conversions attach their wait items before the owning block's first Wait. If that ordering is not guaranteed, settle items added after a completed wait or fall back to force execution.

Scrub the operation before writing the debug notice.
If an internal vertex operation contains URL credentials, a malformed stats packet writes those credentials to the generic log. The formatter can hide the vertex header without --verbose, but it displays generic output. Scrub operation before calling Generic().Write; the normal log-stream path already scrubs credentials. Experiment, do not merge. Restores the solve/export flow of earthfile2llb/converter.go, earthfile2llb/wait_block.go and builder/builder.go to main (9c28bba), keeping #1004's mechanical BuildKit API changes (sourceresolver.Opt, dockerspec types, the Dockerfile2LLB signature). Removed, as introduced by a62d7cb, 172db2e, 29355fa, 9e5859d, 6e725e8 and b38c06d: * Converter.isStateExported and its use in FinalizeStates, so the async forced execution always runs again. * waitBlock.isStateExported(Unlocked) and the waitStates skip. * builder.go isMainHandledByImage, so the "main" ref is always solved. * The SkipBuilder move before newSaveImage (and its GlobalWaitBlockFtr term) and the saveImages "!SkipBuilder" skip. Tests for that removed code are removed with it: earthfile2llb/wait_block_test.go (whole file) and TestIsMainHandledByImage in builder/plan_image_test.go. …s (red) T10: RUN output after a COPY from the local build context is printed three times although the RUN executes once. One gateway job solves a target's main state up to three times (the async forced execution in FinalizeStates, the wait block, and the builder's main ref). Every pllb.State.Marshal goes through llb.NewConstraints, which picks a fresh random LocalUniqueID, and local sources without a session attribute embed it as local.unique. So each marshal yields a different digest for the local source and everything downstream of it (the COPY and the RUN), while their cache keys stay the same. The scheduler merges the edges by cache key and replays the target's log history into the job once per extra solve. TestMarshalIsStableForLocalSources marshals a COPY-from-local then RUN state twice and asserts identical definitions. It fails today. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
T10: RUN output after a COPY from the local build context was printed once per solve of the target (three times) although the RUN ran once. pllb.State.Marshal now prepends llb.LocalUniqueID(processLocalUniqueID), a single identity.NewID() per earth process, so marshaling the same state again yields the same digests for local sources and everything downstream. The repeated solves (FinalizeStates' forced execution, the wait block, the builder's main ref) then load the same vertices instead of new ones that BuildKit merges by cache key and whose logs it replays into the job via state.setEdge -> mpw.Add. Why per process rather than per build or session: - local.unique only exists to keep the client-side digest of a local source that has no local.session attribute from colliding with someone else's. The daemon never reads it: localSourceHandler's cache key is the session ID plus the include/exclude/follow patterns, and the provenance code strips it. Distinct earth processes on one daemon still get distinct IDs, so they never share a local-source vertex. - One earth process runs one build. Its extra solves (the tar image solver for WITH DOCKER --load, the multi-image solver) use the same session attachables, so sharing their local-source vertices is harmless and saves work. - Different local contexts don't collide: the source identifier is local://<absolute dir> and the attrs carry the include/exclude patterns and shared key hint, so the digest differs per context even with the same unique ID. - No caller sets llb.LocalUniqueID today. The ID is prepended, so a caller that does still wins (later options override earlier ones); TestMarshalLetsCallersOverrideLocalUniqueID pins that. The WITH DOCKER tar context sets llb.SessionID and is unaffected. - Nothing relied on the randomness to re-transfer files. Within a job the random digests already shared one cache key, so the scheduler merged them before any snapshot (that merge is the bug). File contents reach the cache via the COPY's content hash, not the source digest. --no-cache sets IgnoreCache on every solve of the build consistently (c.opt.NoCache, b.opt.NoCache), and BuildKit keys an ignore-cache load of an already active vertex separately (jobs.go dgstWithoutCache). LOCALLY doesn't use a local source. earth has no watch mode. Turns TestMarshalIsStableForLocalSources green. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Points go.mod and the buildkitd base image at the heads of the stacked fix PRs so CI exercises the integration: - EarthBuild/buildkit dd17522a (#48 on #41): platform check only skipped when every exporter is earthly; vendors fixed fsutil. - EarthBuild/fsutil e66a226 (#4 on #3): send progress counted once (fixes "transferred 134 MB" for a 67 MB context), native paths in verbose progress callbacks. Both are unmerged; TODOs mark the pins to advance once they land. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
EarthBuild/buildkit 1f6ea531 adds the getMountDeps fix (upstream 3c87ba1b plus skipping earthly socket mounts) so RUN --no-cache again invalidates the commands after it. Still an unmerged stacked PR; the existing TODOs cover advancing the pin once it lands. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
#1004 switched the default BUILDKIT_GIT_ORG to EarthBuild but kept BUILDKIT_GIT_BRANCH=earthly-main, a branch that only exists in the old earthly fork. Without an explicit SHA the branch lookup came back empty and +update-buildkit failed. EarthBuild/buildkit's default branch is main. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
RootFlags now falls back to the installation name "earth" (~/.earth). cliutil.GetEarthDir still falls back to "earthly" (~/.earthly) for an empty name, which is the name the autocomplete path passes before flags are parsed. GetBinaryName also still falls back to "earthly" (this predates the PR, and only applies when os.Args is empty). Both tests are expected to fail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… everywhere #1004 changed RootFlags to fall back to the installation name "earth" (~/.earth) when the binary is built without -X main.DefaultInstallationName, i.e. with go build or go install. Two other fallbacks still said "earthly": * cliutil.GetEarthDir, used for an empty installation name. That happens on the autocomplete path, which runs before flags are parsed, so autocomplete wrote its logs to ~/.earthly while the rest of the CLI used ~/.earth. * common.GetBinaryName, used when os.Args is empty. The installed binary is now earth. Both now use "earth". The installation-name fallback is one exported constant, cliutil.DefaultInstallationName, which RootFlags and GetEarthDir share, so they cannot drift again. Nothing else depends on the old default: - Release and dev builds set DefaultInstallationName through ldflags (Earthfile: earth-dev by default). - tests/cli builds its binary with -X main.DefaultInstallationName=earthly, so its ~/.earthly paths are unaffected. - The earthly-named symlink and completion handling in bootstrap_cmds.go key off os.Executable(), not these fallbacks. Doc comments that still said ~/.earthly now say ~/.<installation name>. Turns TestInstallationNameFallbacksAgree and TestGetBinaryNameFallback green. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
#1004 made malformed stats packets non-fatal, but dropped them without a trace. BuildKit's log size/rate limits can clip the binary stats stream mid-frame, so occasional drops are expected; repeated ones would signal a protocol mismatch and were invisible. With --debug, print one notice per vertex naming the operation and the decode error. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Split stats handling out of vertexMonitor.Write (nestif), drop the now unused nolint:nilerr, reorder struct fields for alignment, and fix wsl and noinlineerr findings. No behaviour change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Stacked on #1004 (
chore-buildkit-merge-v0.14.1). Merging this into #1004 turns #1004 into a slim BuildKit v0.14.1 upgrade. That upgrade drops #1004's image-export dedupe and keepsmain's solve/export flow unchanged. Why the dedupe goes
#1004 dedupes solves and exports because, against BuildKit v0.14.1, a RUN's output was printed 2–3× and
tests/remote-cachefailed. That turned out to be T10, not the export flow:pllb.State.Marshalpicked a fresh randomLocalUniqueID, so each re-solve of a target got new digests with the same cache keys. With T10 fixed (one
local.uniqueper earth process),main's flow prints each RUN once. The evidence is in the experiment, #1050 (draft, CI 72/72); the measurements are in its comment:
--global-wait-end, and 40 images inWAIT.tests/remote-cachepasses, locally and in CI.tests/remote-cachefails (test '3' '-eq' '1').--no-cachepropagation (T8),BUILD --auto-skipand the multi-platform index are all correct. The earlier round of this PR fixed bugs inside the dedupe (auto-skip,
WAIT/ENDordering, export predicates, a data race, starvation, multi-platform manifests, cross-block waits). Those bugs disappear with the dedupe. That work is kept onreview/pr1004-export-ownership(old head 9dfd737) in case single-owner exports are wanted later.Commits
