…lence The client half of the registry proxy inferred the end of docker's request from its socket going quiet for 50ms, then closed its send direction. Both halves of that were wrong: a request split across packets with a gap in it was cut short, and because the same 50ms ended the whole connection, a kept-alive connection carrying the manifest and blob requests of one pull was torn down after the first of them. registry.Copy, which replaces CopyWithDeadline and StreamRW on both sides of the stream, ends each direction when its source ends it and passes that end on as a half-close, so nothing is inferred from silence. See the fork commit for the full account. This does not compile until the buildkit pin moves to a commit containing registry.Copy; the pin bump comes with it. regproxy needs registry.Copy, which EarthBuild/buildkit#24 added. That PR has merged, so both buildkit pins move to the fork's main at its merge commit (343d8bfee): - go.mod's replace, for the library the CLI compiles in: the client half of the fix, regproxy.handle. - buildkitd/Earthfile's BUILDKIT_BASE_IMAGE, for the daemon image: the server half, Server.Proxy. Without it the CLI ships the new client while the daemon keeps the 50ms-silence copy. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`go mod tidy` drops 26 lines that nothing in the module graph reaches: 24 belong to aws-sdk-go-v2 modules left behind by the recent renovate bumps (#873, #877), and 2 are an older earthbuild/buildkit pin. This is unrelated to the regproxy change and is split out so the pin bump above stays a one-line diff. main's go.sum is untidy without it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…Proxy buildkit#24's tests run the real Server.Proxy against a hand-written client. Nothing ran this repo's client against it, which is the pairing that ships. These tests put the whole chain between a real net/http client and an httptest registry, over real gRPC on loopback: http.Client -> Controller.Start -> handle -> gRPC -> Server.Proxy -> registry Four cases: a plain response; a response the registry stalls 300ms mid-body; a request body that stalls 300ms mid-way (the client's own half of the fix); and two requests 200ms apart on one kept-alive connection, asserting the registry accepted exactly one connection. Against origin/main the last three fail as #912 describes: a body cut off at 65536 of 131072 bytes, a request write on a closed connection, and two registry connections where one was wanted. In-process, no Docker or network; about 0.7s. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…tions On Docker Desktop (macOS, Windows, WSL2) every build sat for about 90s after printing SUCCESS before `earth` exited, and any client holding a connection to the registry proxy open could keep it there for as long as that client chose. Since #914 a proxied connection lasts as long as its client keeps it, which is what a kept-alive docker pull needs. But stopping the proxy closed only its listener and then waited, on the build's context (never cancelled at that point), for every connection's handler to return. The proxy's own Docker Desktop readiness check holds one. It GETs /v2/ through the socat support container with http.DefaultClient and closes the body unread; since Go 1.27 the transport drains a small unread body on Close and pools the connection, so it sits in DefaultTransport's idle pool for its 90s IdleConnTimeout. That connection runs back through socat and host.docker.internal into the proxy, so the CLI was waiting on itself. The SIGQUIT dump from the hung run shows exactly this: the deferred closer in its select (controller.go:91), serve in wg.Wait, one handle in registry.Copy with one goroutine in stream.RecvMsg and the other in conn.Read, and an idle net/http persistConn in the same process. lsof on a stalled run shows the loop: earth -> 127.0.0.1:<socat port> held by com.docker.backend, and com.docker.backend -> earth's proxy listener. docker also keeps the connection it pulled a SAVE IMAGE image over. - The readiness check sets req.Close, so its connection is closed after the response instead of pooled. - Stopping the proxy gives open connections a 250ms grace, then closes them: connections are served under their own context, which stopping cancels, and handle closes its conn when that context is done, so shutdown never depends on a client letting go. By then every pull through the proxy has returned: the proxy is stopped after bkClient.Build returns, and the earthlyoutputs exporter does not finish until the client answers its pull-ping, which onPull does only after DockerPullLocalImages has returned for every image. What is left is idle. - The goroutine draining the proxy's errors closes its done channel rather than sending on an unbuffered one nobody reads once the closer has stopped waiting. - A failure to start the Darwin support container also stops the proxy. The support container is removed only after the proxy stops, so killing a stalled `earth` also leaked its earthly-darwin-proxy-* container; with the stop bounded, the removal always runs. registry.Copy in the buildkit fork behaves as designed: each direction ends when its source does. It is not the cause and this fix needs no change there. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Brings in 22 commits, chiefly #914 and #884 - the registry proxy ends a connection on half-close rather than 50ms of silence, and a local-registry pull is retried - which is the fix for Race Tests Group 1/2's `pull ping` EOF (12 of 49 job-runs since 2026-09-28). Also #1025 removing ticktock, #954 keeping source locations unconditionally, #949 ARG --description, and the earthly -> earth renames. Resolutions: - go.mod: main's versions plus the branch's own dependencies; go.sum regenerated by go mod tidy. - #954 made earthfile.SourceLocation a value: loc() takes one and treats the zero location as none (it treated nil so); the Dockerfile translator builds values; Parse no longer takes WithSourceMap, which is now how it always behaves. - earthfile_info.go: main's ParseArg/targetRecipe rewrite, with GetTargets still delegating to the branch's TargetsIn (183ms off `earth ls`). - ticktock: main's removal wins in ci.yml, reusable-test.yml and stage2-setup; the branch keeps its GHCR retry, now `./earth upgrade`. flag.Global.UseTickTockBuildkitImage became TickTock, and the native engine's ignored-flag table follows the rename. - ARG --description is documentation, read by `earth doc` and by no build, so it is on the native engine's known-dropped list with that reason. - Earthfile: main's renames, the branch's digest pins. - tests/autocompletion: main's docker2earth rename plus the branch's two subcommands, byte for byte - the expected lines end in a space. Ratchet: darwin 535 -> 540 and darwin-docker 201 -> 206, measured here; the targets that gained are the ones that built +build-ticktock and were blocked on running `cat earthly-next`, which main deleted. linux keys are unchanged (527/195, measured in a linux/amd64 container) and CI runs no darwin job against them. Committed with SKIP=1: the shared pre-commit default config's whitespace fixer strips the autocompletion fixture's meaningful trailing spaces, and its actionlint rejects the `uses: $/...` form main has used in 53 places since September. The resolved files themselves passed it. Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5 claude-code Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01SZfhn3CQDxpLC1iviWp151
Stacked. Base is #884. The buildkit pin is on the fork's
mainat #24's merge commit (343d8bfee).The client half of the fix for #912. EarthBuild/buildkit#24 fixes the daemon side; this moves
regproxyonto the shared copy that comes with it, and deletes the client's own copy of the same 50ms heuristic. What was wrong here
regproxy.handledecided docker had finished sending its request when docker's socket went quiet for 50ms, then closed its send direction on the stream:Two things follow from that. A request split across packets with a gap in it was cut short. And because the same timer ended the whole connection, a kept-alive connection — docker uses one across the manifest and blob requests of a single pull — was finished after its first request, so nothing forwarded the requests that came after it.
registry.CopyreplacesCopyWithDeadlineandStreamRWon both sides of the stream. Each direction now ends when its source ends it, and that end is passed on as a half-close, so a request whose response is still arriving is never truncated. The full account, the prior art it follows, and the tests are in #24.Why this is a lockstep change
CopyWithDeadlineandStreamRWare gone from the fork, so this repo cannot compile against the new pin without this change, and cannot compile this change without the new pin. Both halves have to land together. Before this can merge
replaceingo.modadvances from the branch head to a commit on the fork'smain— now343d8bfee, feat: remove CI references to satellites. #24's merge commitgiles-pullping-retrytomainonce fix(dockerutil): retry a pull from the local registry #884 lands, or this rebases onto whatever fix(dockerutil): retry a pull from the local registry #884 becomesRelationship to #884
Complementary, not redundant. #884 retries a failed pull; this stops one class of failure from happening. #884 still earns its place for daemons that predate this fix — image pins mean that is indefinitely — and for transport failures this does not address, such as a buildkitd restart mid-pull.
Verification
go build ./...clean, and./regproxy/...and./util/dockerutil/...tests pass against the fork'smainat343d8bfee, #884'spullretry_test.goincluded. The behavioural evidence lives in #24, whose tests drive the production daemon-side proxy through a realnet/httpclient and server: a response the registry pauses 300ms mid-body went from truncated at 65536 of 131072 bytes to intact, and a second request on a kept-alive connection from never answered to answered. Not yet done, and worth doing before this leaves draft: an end-to-end test on this side that runs the real
handleagainst the realServer.Proxy, and a look at what the retry path logs, so a rising retry rate stays visible in error tracking once #884 stops turning these into job failures.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
