fix(security): v3.0.1 client changes for the security hotfix - #1
Socket: works with the authenticated socket server. It rejoins rooms after a reconnect, refreshes the session when the socket is rejected, and closes the socket on logout.
2FA: uses the cookie-bound flow, and keeps the dialog open after a wrong code instead of leaving the login page.
Project secrets are write-only: the webhook secret shows set or not set, a regenerated secret is shown once, and hidden variables can be replaced without being revealed.
Lint: ESLint errors are cleared.
Version: bumped to 3.0.1.
How it was tested
tsc -b, the tests (4 files, 8 tests) and lint (0 errors) pass, and vite build succeeds.
Playwright against the 3.0.1 server:
2FA login, including a wrong code first.
Authenticated sockets.
The webhook secret is shown once after regeneration and not after a reload.
Breaking changes
This client needs the 3.0.1 server.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Webhook secrets are now shown only when newly generated, with reveal and copy controls; existing secrets display only whether one is set.
Editing a masked project secret leaves its stored value unchanged unless you enter a replacement.
Two-factor authentication now reports when older backup codes are no longer accepted.
Improvements
Two-factor verification handles expired or rate-limited challenges with clearer sign-in feedback.
Project and deployment room subscriptions reconnect more reliably after socket interruptions.
- Re-join remembered project/deployment rooms on every reconnect so live
logs keep flowing after a network blip; forget rooms the server refuses.
- When the handshake is rejected (expired access token), refresh the
session once and reconnect.
- The server joins the user room itself; stop emitting join:user.
- Disconnect the socket on logout.
- verify-2fa sends only the code; the server identifies the user from the
httpOnly mfa_pending cookie set at login. The login challenge type no
longer carries a user id.
- A wrong 2FA code no longer triggers the token-refresh interceptor and a
full-page redirect; the dialog shows the server's message instead.
- An expired or exhausted 2FA step, or an account lockout (429), returns
the user to the password form.
- Security settings warn when pre-3.0.1 backup codes were invalidated.
- Unit tests for the 2FA service calls.
The server no longer returns webhook secrets, SSH key ciphertext or
secret config values; it sends a mask plus a Secrets { HasValue } map.
- Webhook card shows set / not set. A regenerated secret is shown once,
with a warning to copy it into GitHub now.
- Variables manager shows hidden values as "(set, hidden)"; editing one
starts empty and leaving it empty keeps the stored secret.
- Project types drop the SSH ciphertext fields and add Secrets.
- Tests for the card and the mask helpers.
- Rename the UserRole type alias to TRoleName (naming rule); the UserRole
value is unchanged.
- Declare loader functions before the effects and callbacks that use
them (SshKeyManagement, DeploymentDetailsPage).
- Remove a redundant LoginPage effect (the 2FA dialog is already opened
by both code paths) and initialise AuthContext's loading flag instead
of setting it synchronously in an effect.
- Remove an empty destructuring pattern in ReportsPage.
- The remaining react-hooks/set-state-in-effect hits are fetch-on-mount
and reset-on-open effects; they carry line-level disables with the
reason, pending a refactor outside this hotfix.
Verify2FA toggled the global IsLoading flag, so the route guards replaced
the login page with a loader and remounted it, losing the dialog and
the error after a wrong code. The login page already has its own
spinner, so the context no longer touches the global flag here.

Walkthrough
The client updates two-factor authentication and socket recovery, changes project secret display and editing, and adopts a shared role type. It also adds two-factor status messaging, effect-rule annotations, and a package version update.
Changes: Authentication and session
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Two-factor challenge contract and service src/types/auth.ts, src/services/authService.ts, src/services/authService.test.ts, src/services/api.ts
Two-factor challenges no longer include a user ID. Verification submits a trimmed code, and API failures are converted to AuthApiError. Tests cover the request, challenge result, and error status.
Two-factor login and status src/pages/Auth/LoginPage.tsx, src/contexts/AuthContext.tsx, src/types/auth.ts, src/hooks/useUserSettings.ts, src/services/userSettingsService.ts, src/components/Settings/SecurityTab.tsx, src/i18n/locales/{ar,en}.json
Login submits the code without a user ID and handles selected failures by returning to the login form. Two-factor status uses a shared type, and the security tab displays a warning when legacy backup codes were invalidated.
Role type usage src/contexts/RoleContext.tsx, src/components/RoleGuard.tsx, src/components/Layout/MainLayout.tsx, src/pages/Settings/SettingsPage.tsx
Role context, guards, menus, and settings tabs use TRoleName in place of UserRole as a type.
The socket service tracks project and deployment room joins and re-emits them after reconnecting. It attempts a rate-limited token refresh after an inactive-socket handshake error. Logout disconnects the socket, and the app no longer emits join:user.
Project secret handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Secret shapes and masked variable editing src/types/project.ts, src/utils/secrets.ts, src/components/Projects/VariablesManager.tsx
Project secret metadata and mask helpers are added. Variable editing treats masked values as write-only and preserves the stored value when the input remains empty.
Webhook secret display and validation src/pages/Projects/ProjectDetailsPage.tsx, src/pages/Projects/components/ProjectWebhookCard.tsx, src/pages/Projects/components/ProjectWebhookCard.test.tsx, src/i18n/locales/{ar,en}.json
The webhook card shows whether a secret is set by default. After regeneration, it can display the returned secret with a warning. Tests cover secret display and presence checks.
Effect-rule suppression comments are added, existing deployment fetch helpers are moved without changing their behavior, ReportsPage stops destructuring the unused theme result, and the package version changes to 3.0.1.

The revealed secret lived in page state that survived navigation to another
project, so the next project's card showed the previous secret. Key it by
project id.
Add a leave path for tracked project and deployment rooms.
SocketService.join records every room in rooms (src/services/socket.ts:92). The map entry is removed in only two cases: the join ack reports Ok: false (:94-96), or the whole service disconnects (:70). No caller removes a room when its page unmounts. DeploymentDetailsPage removes only its deployment:log listener (src/pages/Deployments/DeploymentDetailsPage.tsx:91-93). The useDeploymentUpdates cleanup is empty (src/hooks/useSocket.ts:53-55). The client has no leave operation.
Each reconnect calls rejoinRooms() (:54-56, :100-104), which re-emits every tracked join. Rooms for pages the user has left are therefore rejoined. The socket keeps receiving their events, and the replay work grows with each distinct project or deployment visited in the session.
The current page code filters events by id, so the user sees correct data. The impact is extra event traffic and replay work. A complete fix needs a leave operation on the server, and this repository does not contain the server contract. Add a leave event, have each page cleanup call it, and remove the matching entry from rooms. Confirm the server event name and its authorization behavior before implementing it.

Cover the legacy WebhookSecret fallback with a negative exposure assertion.
The fixture at ProjectWebhookCard.test.tsx:15-19 sets Secrets.WebhookSecret but no top-level WebhookSecret. ProjectWebhookCard.tsx:45 reads the legacy field only as the fallback argument to HasSecret. Neither assertion at lines 31-32 checks the raw value. A change that renders project.WebhookSecret as an extra field value in the card would pass both assertions.
The current card does not expose the raw value. The non-revealed branch renders only the status text (line 117), and the revealed branch uses only revealedSecret (lines 93 and 102). This is a coverage gap for working behavior, not a current defect.
Add the legacy field to the fixture, then assert that its value does not appear in a form field:
The fixture change keeps the status assertion valid. HasSecret returns state.HasValue when Secrets.WebhookSecret exists, so the card still shows projects.secretSet. The queryByDisplayValue check covers rendering into a form field, which is how the card displays secret values. It does not cover raw text outside a field.

Update the project fixture in the `ProjectWebhookCard` test to include a legacy
`WebhookSecret` value, then add a negative `queryByDisplayValue` assertion
confirming that value is not rendered in a form field while the secret remains
unrevealed.
Add a parent-level test for the regeneration reveal handoff.
ProjectWebhookCard.test.tsx passes revealedSecret directly as a prop. It does not exercise the path from a successful regeneration to that prop. In ProjectDetailsPage.tsx, handleRegenerateWebhook sets the secret in onSuccess, and the page passes revealedSecret={RevealedWebhookSecret} to the card. No inspected test file references ProjectDetailsPage or handleRegenerateWebhook. Removing the setRevealedWebhookSecret call or the prop would not fail any inspected test.
The current wiring is correct, so this is a coverage gap, not a defect. Consider a ProjectDetailsPage test that mocks the regeneration mutation so that mutate calls onSuccess with a secret. Stub window.confirm to return true, because the handler exits early without it. Then assert that the secret appears in the card. Weigh the setup cost of mocking the page's dependencies against the benefit of guarding the one-time reveal.

Review comment at @src/pages/Projects/components/ProjectWebhookCard.test.tsx
around lines 38 - 48:
Add a ProjectDetailsPage test that exercises the regeneration-to-reveal handoff:
mock the regeneration mutation to invoke onSuccess with a secret, make
window.confirm return true, and assert the secret appears in ProjectWebhookCard.
Keep the existing direct-prop test focused on card rendering.
Add a regression test for the /auth/verify-2fa 401 branch of the response interceptor.
authService.test.ts replaces ./api with a stub that exposes only post. Requests in these tests never pass through the response interceptor in src/services/api.ts. The interceptor's 401 branch for /auth/verify-2fa removes user_preferences, redirects to /login when the pathname does not already include /login, and rejects with the original error. No test runs that branch, so a regression leaves the suite green.
Test guidance:
Put the test in a separate file that imports the real ApiInstance from ./api. The vi.mock("./api", ...) call in authService.test.ts applies to the whole file.
Replace ApiInstance.defaults.adapter with a function that rejects with an AxiosError whose config is the adapter's config argument. The interceptor reads error.config as originalRequest. If config is missing, the 401 branch is skipped, so the cleanup and redirect do not run. Set the response status to 401.
Assert that localStorage.getItem("user_preferences") is null and that the rejection is the original error.
Assert the redirect only with a non-login location. Set the test pathname to a path that does not include /login, and stub window.location with a writable href. jsdom does not perform page navigation, so window.location.href does not change after assignment.
Restore the original adapter in afterEach.

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The masked-value preservation marker is assigned to newKey even when the preceding branch deletes editingKey. Preservation at a new path may not transfer the old key's stored secret.
The old secret may be deleted while the new variable has no usable value or contains the mask literally, despite the UI saying that blank keeps the current value.
This can occur when: Rename a masked variable from OLD_KEY to NEW_KEY, leave its value blank, and save.
src/services/socket.ts-93-96: 1
93-96: Minor · Potential issue · Low value
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
A negative acknowledgement deletes a room by key without checking whether that acknowledgement belongs to the latest join for the key.
The successful room is forgotten and is not restored after reconnect.
This can occur when: An earlier join is delayed, a later join for the same room is accepted, then the earlier negative acknowledgement arrives.
src/pages/Auth/LoginPage.tsx-159-163: 1
159-163: Minor · Potential issue · Quick win
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The restart guard recognizes only 429 or an English “sign in again” phrase; an expired or exhausted cookie reported with another status or message leaves the user in the code dialog.
Further code submissions keep failing until the user manually cancels and starts login again.
This can occur when: The pending step expires and the server reports, for example, 401 with “2FA challenge expired”.
