ALSA or JACK should be preferred on Linux systems. OpenBSD ports maintainers have deliberately disabled it for years in favor of the native sndio backend. All other platforms don't support it.
Edit: FreeBSD supports it, but also has access to sndio, ALSA (somehow lol), PortAudio, etc. etc.
