Windows: pack each DLL only where the loader looks for it - #83

Since 1.4.5 the same DLL could be packed in up to three places: bin, the Ruby archdir (detected and companion DLLs were also duplicated to their original location) and the devkit's msys64\ucrt64\bin (a same-named DLL the dependency run loaded from the devkit under ridk/bundle exec), and libwinpthread-1.dll went into bin although ruby_builtin_dlls provides it. A RubyInstaller 4.0 --output-dir package grew from 38.8 MB to 45.9 MB. Ruby loads extensions with LoadLibraryW and an absolute path, so their imports resolve from bin, ruby_builtin_dlls and the system directories, never from the extension's own directory: the archdir copy was never searched. Collect the detected, companion and imported DLLs and decide their placement in Direction.windows_dll_placement: DLLs in bin stay, basenames ruby_builtin_dlls provides are skipped, every other basename goes into bin once, preferring the Ruby tree over msys64 and over directories outside the prefix. A DLL from a gem's tree keeps its original location too, where the gem may load it by path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Testing on RubyInstaller 4.0.5 disproved the previous commit's premise. RubyInstaller ships the DLLs of an extension as a private SxS assembly: openssl.so embeds a dependency on "openssl.so-assembly", whose manifest beside it lists libcrypto-3-x64.dll and libssl-3-x64.dll, and the loader resolves those names to that directory only. With them only in bin the packed app failed: "126: The specified module could not be found - openssl.so" (likewise psych.so, and fiddle.so without the libffi-8.dll in its gem extension directory). So a DLL listed by an assembly manifest in its own directory now stays there and gets no bin copy, which it never used. Other DLLs still go into bin once per basename - OpenSSL loads ZLIB1.dll by name, through the search order, which the dependency run found in the devkit's msys64 - without the in-place copy in an arch dir or msys64. Test app (openssl, psych, zlib, fiddle, sqlite3), ridk exec bundle exec, --output-dir: 30.49 MB on master, 23.99 MB now, runs with a minimal PATH and resolves ZLIB1.dll from bin. ruby.exe is packed into bin whatever the host's bindir is, but a DLL from bindir kept its path relative to exec_prefix, which is not beside the packed interpreter when bindir is not exec_prefix/bin. Map it to bin by its path relative to bindir instead (addresses CodeRabbit). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
Reported against 1.5.1 (
--output-dir, RubyInstaller 4.0.1 x64-mingw-ucrt): the same DLL landed in up to three places, adding ~13.6 MB to a 45.9 MB package (1.4.3: 38.8 MB). Regression since 1.4.5 (#56).libcrypto-3-x64.dll/libssl-3-x64.dll/zlib1.dll:bin,lib\ruby\4.0.0\x64-mingw-ucrt,msys64\ucrt64\binlibwinpthread-1.dll:bin,bin\ruby_builtin_dlls, archdirlibyaml-0-2.dll:bin+ archdir;libffi-8.dll:bin+msys64\ucrt64\binHow RubyInstaller 4.0 actually resolves these (verified on the VM)
RubyInstaller ships an extension's DLLs beside it as a private SxS assembly:
openssl.soembeds a manifest dependency onopenssl.so-assembly, andopenssl.so-assembly.manifestnext to it lists<file name="libcrypto-3-x64.dll"/><file name="libssl-3-x64.dll"/>(likewise psych→libyaml, zlib→zlib1, date_core→libwinpthread, fiddle gem→libffi). The loader resolves those names to the assembly directory only:126: The specified module could not be found - openssl.so; same forpsych.so, andfiddle.sowithout the libffi in its gem extension dir.So the archdir copies are required, and the bin copies of assembly DLLs were never used. The msys64
ZLIB1.dllis different: no module imports it. OpenSSL loads it by name at run time (zlib-dynamic) through the search order, and the packed app resolves it frombin\ZLIB1.dll.Fix
Direction.windows_dll_placement(new, pure) decides placement for all detected, companion and imported DLLs:binstays where it is.ruby_builtin_dllsis packed whole as before, and its basenames are not packed again.binonce per basename, preferring the Ruby tree. It is no longer also packed at its original location in an arch dir or msys64. Gem-tree DLLs (e.g. tiny_tds' FreeTDS) also keep their original location, as before. The Linux branch and
--static-runtimeare unchanged.Verification
Windows (VM, RubyInstaller 4.0.5 x64-mingw-ucrt with devkit). Test app uses openssl (+SSLContext), psych, zlib, fiddle (kernel32 call) and sqlite3 (in-memory DB). Built with
ridk exec bundle exec ruby exe/ocran bin/app.rb --output-dir dist --gemfile Gemfile, then run viaapp.exewithPATH=C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows:ZLIB1.dllresolved fromdist\binDLLs in the PR's package:
bin\ZLIB1.dll,bin\x64-ucrt-ruby400.dll,bin\ruby_builtin_dlls\{libgmp-10,libwinpthread-1}.dll, archdir{libcrypto-3-x64,libssl-3-x64,libyaml-0-2,zlib1,libwinpthread-1}.dll(all assembly files), and fiddle'slibffi-8.dllbesidefiddle.so. Each of these is required. The reporter's app may still carry a bin copy of libcrypto/libssl if its dependency run really loaded them from msys64 through the search order, i.e. by a consumer outside openssl.so's assembly. That copy is then needed.
Linux: the same kind of app under
--output-dirhas no duplicate shared libraries (by name or by content), so no change is needed there.Tests:
test/test_windows_dll_placement.rbcovers the decision cross-platform (assembly manifests written to a tmpdir, no dlload, no exe).rake teston Linux: 270 runs, the only failure istest_fxruby(no X display on the box). CodeRabbit (--committed --base origin/master): 0 findings. Not tested: mswin Ruby. Its DLLs live in
binand stay there, as before.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
Summary by CodeRabbit
binonce per name, unless they’re already provided by Ruby.binor within a gem retain their locations. Certain DLLs within the Ruby installation are also retained at their original relative paths, while unnecessary duplicate copies are avoided.
