Bitcoin Sovereignty Research Framework

A professional research repository for the legal and policy treatment of Bitcoin as sui generis bearer property and adjacent currency.

Canonical Repository: https://github.com/MoloBTC-Org/bsrf

Steward: Jacques Strydom, PMP

Purpose

This repository serves as the single source of truth for the Bitcoin Sovereignty Research Framework. It provides a structured, high-fidelity body of work that combines jurisprudential foundations with practical operational guidance for self-custodied Bitcoin.

The framework is designed to support researchers, legal practitioners, policymakers, and organisations working on Bitcoin sovereignty, self-custody rights, and regulatory clarity.

Core Positions

  • Bitcoin is sui generis bearer property — it cannot be coherently forced into traditional legal categories of currency, capital, commodity, or security.
  • Bitcoin functions as an adjacent currency to state-issued money.
  • Self-custody and the Right to Sovereign Private Compute are fundamental rights.
  • Sound policy must maintain a clear distinction between Bitcoin and issuer-dependent crypto assets.

Repository Structure

The repository is organised to move from high-level principles to detailed analysis:

  • Root — README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, LICENSE.md, PUBLISHING_BASELINE_v1.md, SOVEREIGN-KNOWLEDGE-DECLARATION.md, Open_Letter_Bitcoin_Separation.md
  • begin_here/ — Core Principles, Global Framework, Ecosystem Index, Master Collation Database
  • foundations/ — Tier 1 papers and foundations/supporting/
  • operational/ — Tier 2 papers
  • jurisdictions/ — country legislative and regulatory notes (law track)
  • tax_track/ — charging, reporting and capital-flow notes, plus filed South African tax and FinSurv instruments
  • education_track/ — instructional material
  • .github/ — CODEOWNERS, PR template, governance notes

Supporting analyses live in foundations/supporting/ and tax_track/supporting/. There is no top-level policy/ or supporting/ folder.
