What does this PR do?

Type of change: New tests

Adds a shared pytest framework that executes code snippets directly from READMEs, helping catch documentation regressions without maintaining separate copies of example commands.

READMEs contain one stable ID per snippet. Python tests define execution order, setup, assertions, resource requirements, and exclusions.
The runner preserves shell/Python state, enforces deadlines, cleans up subprocesses, and reports failures with snippet IDs and source locations.
Adds pilot coverage for the LLM QAT and Megatron Bridge READMEs, using small local inputs and checking training, quantization, and export artifacts.
Adds advisory CI that proposes snippet diffs and concise test/fixture changes, then requests maintainer approval before implementation.
Updates CI path filters so README-only changes select the relevant test workflows.
Usage
Mark a README snippet:

<!-- modelopt-snippet: example-command -->

printf 'hello\n'

Reference its ID from a Python test definition:

from _test_utils.doc_tests.parser import Scenario

SCENARIOS = [
    Scenario("example-smoke", ["example-command"], timeout_seconds=30),
]

Run the framework tests:

python -m pytest tests/unit/doc_tests \
  --confcutdir=tests/unit/doc_tests -o addopts='' -q

Run a pilot in its supported example environment:

python -m pytest tests/examples/llm_qat/test_llm_qat_readme.py --no-cov -rs
python -m pytest tests/examples/megatron_bridge/test_megatron_bridge_readme.py --no-cov -rs

Manual integrations require explicit --run-manual. See tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/README.md for environment requirements and fixture conventions.

Testing

  • 48 CPU framework tests passed during development, covering parsing, reference validation, shared state, diagnostics, deadlines, and subprocess cleanup.
  • Both pilot modules collected successfully: 31 scenarios total.
  • All six advisory publisher tests passed, including stale-head rejection, single-comment updates, and explicit implementation approval.
  • Workflow YAML, representative path-filter cases, and git diff --check passed.
  • The manual advisory assessment was exercised on PR test adding new readmes #2893. Automatic assessment and publishing remain pending end-to-end validation.
  • The recorded QAT run had 7 passed, 5 failed, and 3 manual scenarios skipped. Four failures involved an incompatible FlashAttention binary; one involved a QAD teacher missing q_bmm_quantizer. Full passing pilot validation remains outstanding.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds executable Markdown scenario tooling and applies it to the LLM QAT and Megatron Bridge READMEs. It also adds a pull-request workflow that assesses README testability and publishes advisory proposals.

Changes: Executable README scenarios

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and validate Markdown scenarios
tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/parser.py, tests/unit/doc_tests/test_markdown.py
The parser extracts ID-marked snippets, resolves scenario definitions, and reports malformed input and uncovered snippets. Unit tests cover parser and scenario validation.
Run scenarios with shared state and timeouts
tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/runner.py, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/pytest_utils.py, tests/unit/doc_tests/test_markdown.py, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/README.md, tests/examples/README.md
The runner executes Python and shell steps in a worker process and cleans up process groups. Pytest utilities apply scenario marks and skip unmet requirements. Tests and documentation cover execution, errors, and cleanup.
Exercise the LLM QAT README
examples/llm_qat/README.md, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/fixtures/llm_qat*.py, tests/examples/llm_qat/*
The README marks executable examples and updates several commands. Fixtures prepare reduced inputs and verify outputs; pytest scenarios select commands and execution requirements.
Exercise the Megatron Bridge README
examples/megatron_bridge/README.md, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/fixtures/megatron_bridge*.py, tests/examples/megatron_bridge/*, .github/workflows/example_tests.yml, .github/workflows/unit_tests.yml
The README marks examples and adds configurable command inputs and paths. Fixtures and scenarios cover Bridge commands. Workflows add README path detection; the Megatron lane flag uses torch_docs, not the added megatron_docs category.

README testability advice workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Assess README testability changes
.github/prompts/readme_testability.md, .github/workflows/readme_testability.yml, AGENTS.md, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/README.md
The workflow assesses README changes using base-checkout guidance, verifies the reviewed commit, and saves nonempty proposals as artifacts. Guidance describes the assessment and maintainer authorization process.
Validate and publish proposals
.github/scripts/readme_testability.cjs, .github/scripts/readme_testability.test.cjs, .github/workflows/readme_testability.yml
The publication script validates proposals and commit identifiers, skips closed or stale pull requests, and creates or updates marked bot comments. Tests cover publication and rejection cases.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use megatron_docs in the MEGATRON lane expression.

The megatron_docs filter at lines 83-84 matches examples/megatron_bridge/README.md. No lane reads that output. MEGATRON checks torch_docs_any_modified instead. This has two effects:

  • A PR that changes only the Megatron Bridge README does not select the Megatron lane. The new README tests do not run on that PR.
  • A PR that changes only examples/llm_qat/README.md selects the Megatron GPU lane without a reason.

Based on learnings: check that each filter category reaches the lane that it is meant to enable. A mismatched filter can silently disable CI for a case.

Catch OSError in the readiness loop.

The loop catches only urllib.error.URLError and TimeoutError. While vLLM starts, urlopen can raise http.client.RemoteDisconnected or ConnectionResetError from getresponse(). These errors are OSError subclasses that urllib does not wrap in URLError. The first such error aborts the poll early and fails the scenario. URLError and TimeoutError are both OSError subclasses, so OSError covers all of them.

Move the unjustified in-function imports to module scope.

Five functions in tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/fixtures/megatron_bridge.py import inside their bodies with no justifying comment. The tests/**/*.py rule allows an in-function import only for a circular import or an optional dependency, and each such import needs a brief comment naming the reason. The torch, transformers, parse_markdown, and create_tiny_qwen3_dir imports have no such comment. Module-scope imports also surface missing dependencies when the module loads, not partway through a scenario.

The assert_has_modelopt_state import in verify_bridge_quantized can stay in the function because it depends on the optional Megatron stack. Add a comment that names that dependency.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make _assert_dead fail closed when /proc is missing.

The skipif on Line 27 allows any POSIX OS. On macOS, /proc/<pid>/stat never exists. _assert_dead then returns on the first iteration. The cleanup assertions in test_process_group_cleanup and test_background_service_is_verified_then_cleaned_up pass even when the child survives. Skip these checks when /proc is unavailable.

Update _assert_dead to skip verification when /proc is unavailable, so its
missing-process check cannot incorrectly pass on systems without /proc; preserve
the existing polling behavior where /proc is available.

Bot review (gpt-6.1-sol) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Changes requested: README-only CI routing is incorrect, and the learning-rate override assertion conflicts with the configured cosine schedule.

Needs action:

  • Fix MEGATRON routing in .github/workflows/example_tests.yml and add README-only lane regressions, as noted inline.
  • Fix the learning-rate assertion in fixtures/llm_qat_readme.py to verify the CLI override without assuming a constant scheduled rate.
  • Explain in the PR body why extending tests/_test_utils/examples/run_command.py, existing pytest/pytest-timeout tooling, or stdlib doctest is insufficient for the custom snippet framework.
  • Validate both default pilots in their CI containers; resolve the reported FlashAttention/QAD failures and record passing results before enabling this coverage.
  • Confirm the SPDX-only headers in .github/scripts/readme_testability*.cjs are intentional with a human licensing reviewer, or use the full canonical LICENSE_HEADER.

MEGATRON checks torch_docs_any_modified instead of megatron_docs_any_modified. A PR changing only examples/megatron_bridge/README.md therefore skips its example lane (and can report the required check successful without running these tests), while a QAT README edit unnecessarily selects Megatron. Use megatron_docs_any_modified here and add regression cases for each README-only change.

This asserts that a logged scheduled learning rate equals the initial CLI learning rate. The copied qat_nvfp4.yaml retains lr_scheduler_type: cosine, and the fixture reduces training to two optimizer steps. Trainer logs after stepping the scheduler, so the logged rates decay from the configured value rather than necessarily including 5e-05. Verify the saved training arguments' learning_rate, or assert the expected scheduled values; run this specific scenario to confirm it passes.
