What does this PR do?

Type of change: Compatibility update (newer Megatron-Core / Megatron-Bridge)

Makes Minitron pruning of Mamba hybrid models and Puzzletron distillation work with newer Megatron-Core / Megatron-Bridge. The NeMo 26.10 container ships these changes. Without this PR, 4 Megatron GPU or example tests fail there, while they pass on nemo:26.08. Each fix is a no-op on the older versions, and none is a shim to drop once nemo:26.10 is the minimum: the newer MCore needs all of them, and the hasattr checks also tell GPT models (TransformerBlock) apart from hybrid ones.

  • Mamba decode cache (_DynamicMambaMixer): MambaMixer keeps a per-head -exp(A_log) cache that newer MCore refreshes on every eval(). Once pruning shrinks the active heads, the refresh fails with The size of tensor a (8) must match the size of tensor b (6). The cache is now resized to the active heads in train() and after export().
  • Hybrid depth pruning (drop_mcore_language_model_layers): newer HybridStack keeps layer_config_list and its execution lists index-aligned with layers, and its forward zips them with strict=True. Dropping layers now slices them too, and _temporarily_pruned restores them after scoring a candidate. Grouped shortcut-MoE blocks are rejected before anything is mutated.
  • Per-layer configs (MCoreMinitronSearcher._prune): each hybrid layer now holds its own copy of the config. The pruned architecture is now written to those copies as well as model.config. Megatron-Bridge's Mamba in_proj export reads the layer's config, so before this fix exporting a pruned Nemotron-H hit a device-side index-out-of-bounds.
  • Puzzletron provider (HeterogeneousBridgeMixin.provider_bridge): newer Megatron-Bridge derives gtp_weight_remat_size in __post_init__ (init=False), so only fields the constructor accepts are passed.

This unblocks testing ModelOpt's Megatron CI against a newer Megatron-Bridge before nemo:26.10 is out (planned on top of #2889).

Testing

Run with a newer Megatron-Bridge (and its Megatron-LM submodule) on nemo:26.08: src/megatron/bridge and 3rdparty/Megatron-LM/megatron replaced from Megatron-Bridge main + NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565:

  • Before this PR:
    • tests/examples/megatron_bridge: 98 passed, 2 failed (test_distill_puzzletron_anymodel, test_prune_minitron[nemotron_h]).
    • tests/gpu_megatron: 448 passed, 4 failed. test_mcore_hybrid_pruning_nas_params was the real failure; the other 3 were OOMs from GPU contention and pass when rerun alone.
  • With this PR:
    • tests/gpu_megatron/torch/{prune,nas}: 62 passed.
    • test_prune_minitron[nemotron_h] and test_distill_puzzletron_anymodel: pass.
  • Reverting each Megatron fix makes its test fail again: test_mamba_search_space, test_mcore_hybrid_pruning_nas_params, test_prune_minitron[nemotron_h]. The existing tests cover these paths once CI runs a newer MCore, so no new tests.

Stock nemo:26.08, with this PR:

  • tests/gpu_megatron/torch/{prune,nas}: 62 passed.
  • tests/examples/megatron_bridge/test_prune_minitron.py and test_distill.py: 19 passed.

Not run: the nemo:26.10 container itself (its rc has the same Megatron-Core changes), and the full tests/gpu_megatron with this PR.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update Mamba decode-cache resizing during training and export, hybrid-stack state handling during pruning, and provider-field filtering before construction.

Changes: Mamba decode-cache handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resize the decode cache
modelopt/torch/nas/plugins/megatron.py
Training and export resize the MCore decode cache when its shape differs from A_log. The replacement is an empty float32 tensor matching A_log, and the cache is marked stale.

Hybrid-stack pruning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Drop layers and synchronize hybrid state
modelopt/torch/prune/plugins/mcore_minitron.py
Layer dropping rejects grouped hybrid layers. It updates kept-layer configurations, pipeline counts, execution indices, and execution configurations.
Save and restore hybrid state
modelopt/torch/prune/plugins/mcore_minitron.py
Temporary pruning snapshots available hybrid decoder state attributes and restores them after reattaching the layer list.
Apply pruning values to layer configurations
modelopt/torch/prune/plugins/mcore_minitron.py
Pruning updates the model configuration and each hybrid decoder layer configuration. It fills unset dimensions from original values before applying export values.

Provider-field filtering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter provider constructor fields
modelopt/torch/puzzletron/plugins/mbridge/base.py
The provider bridge excludes dataclass fields with init=False when building provider constructor arguments.

unclear comment, how about,

# Some fields are computed in __post_init__ and excluded from constructor
# arguments via init=False. asdict() still includes them, so filter them out
# to avoid a TypeError in GenericHeterogeneousProvider(**provider_kwargs)

btw, the who function is really hacky, do we still need it as Andrii Skliar was working on some more long term solution for heterogenous support in MBridge? I would add TODO in this code as potentially to refactor/replace

Updated the comment with your wording. Yes, we'll switch to Megatron-Bridge's native heterogeneous support once it exists. That may take a while, and in the meantime this change is what unblocks moving to the newer Megatron-Bridge.

Better comment proposal:

"""Resize MCore's decode cache when ModelOpt changes the active head count.

ModelOpt slices A_log, but MCore's cache retains its original shape.
Allocate matching storage and mark it stale so MCore's refresh_cache()
recomputes -exp(A_log) from the active heads before using the cache.

Thanks. I've reviewed this file myself too and trust the code; CodeRabbit also approved it after withdrawing its one finding. Here's a short map in case it helps. Newer MCore's HybridStack keeps per-layer state alongside decoder.layers, so there are three changes:

  1. drop_mcore_language_model_layers also filters layer_config_list and resets the execution-index lists to the kept layers. Dropping grouped hybrid layers (e.g. shortcut MoE blocks) asserts as unsupported.
  2. _temporarily_pruned saves and restores those attributes together with decoder.layers between search candidates.
  3. _prune writes the pruned hparams to model.config and to every per-layer config, because each hybrid layer now has its own copy. The loop body is the existing code.

Older MCore has none of these attributes, so its path is unchanged.

Newer MCore (e.g. nemo:26.10) refreshes the Mamba -exp(A_log) decode cache
on eval(), gives each hybrid layer its own config copy and keeps per-layer
lists index-aligned with HybridStack.layers; newer Megatron-Bridge derives
gtp_weight_remat_size in __post_init__. Resize the cache to the active
heads, slice/restore the per-layer lists when dropping layers, write the
pruned architecture to the per-layer configs, and pass only init fields to
GenericHeterogeneousProvider.

Invalidate the decode cache when the selected heads change at the same count.

_resize_mamba_decode_cache marks _A_neg_exp_cache_stale only when the cache shape differs from A_log. sort_parameters can change _slice_order without changing the active head count. A later sort after the decode cache is populated can therefore change which heads active_slice selects while the shape stays the same. The cache then stays non-stale, and a later decode can use values computed for the previous heads. The helper's TODO notes this gap.

mtn.sample does not change the order, so the trigger is a sort, not sampling. Track the selected head indices alongside the cache. Mark the cache stale when they differ. The helper already runs on train(), eval(), and export(), so that check can run at those points.
