Document installing flash-linear-attention for linear-attention models - #3003
Transformers runs the linear-attention layers of Qwen3-Next, Qwen3.5, Qwen3.8, GLM-5.x Flash, Kimi Linear and OLMo Hybrid through readable PyTorch reference kernels unless the flash-linear-attention kernels are importable. The reference path is slow and needs far more memory per sample, which caps the layerwise calibration batch. This adds a note to the hf_ptq README and one line to the ptq skill on installing the kernels: pip install fla-core.
fla-core alone is enough. The kernels Transformers looks for (fla.ops.kda.chunk_kda, fla.ops.gated_delta_rule.chunk_gated_delta_rule) live in fla-core, which depends only on einops. The flash-linear-attention package holds layers and models Transformers does not use, and pins transformers>=5.6.2,<6.
GPU only. Once the kernels are importable, Transformers uses them for every device, and a CPU forward of these models then fails (RuntimeError: 0 active drivers). That is also why the package is documented rather than added to examples/hf_ptq/requirements.txt, which the example CI installs.
Usage
pip install fla-core
Testing
Layerwise GPTQ on the routed experts at IQ2_XXS on 4x GB300 (oci-jhb), 1,024 x 512 calibration tokens, with #2945 and #3002, flash-linear-attention and fla-core 0.6.0:
Without the kernels
With them
GLM-5.3-Flash: batch the probe picks
16
64 (linear-attention layers fit 181-295 samples instead of 16)
With flash-linear-attention installed but not fla-core, nothing changed: Transformers could not import fla.ops.kda.chunk_kda and kept the reference path. With fla-core alone, it binds fla.ops.kda.chunk.chunk_kda for GLM-5.x and fla.ops.gated_delta_rule.chunk.chunk_gated_delta_rule for Qwen, and a tiny Qwen3-Next runs on GPU through them; on CPU it fails as described above.
The kernels compute slightly differently from the reference: the unquantized GLM-5.3-Flash under them is 0.018 KL from the reference logits, which were computed without them. KL to that reference after GPTQ: Qwen 0.2493 -> 0.2480 (not significant); GLM 0.6189 -> 0.6230 at batch 16 (+0.0041 +- 0.0045, p 0.36) and 0.6306 at batch 64 (+0.0118 +- 0.0050, p 0.02), paired per chunk over 100 x 512 wikitext-2 tokens.

Is this change backward compatible?: ✅
If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in CONTRIBUTING.md: N/A (documents an optional third-party package; nothing added to requirements)
Added guidance for improving GPU calibration performance on models with linear-attention layers, including an example reporting over 2× faster calibration.
Clarified that enabling optimized kernels can cause these models to fail on CPU, so the guidance is intended for GPU environments.
Transformers runs the linear-attention layers of Qwen3-Next, Qwen3.5,
Qwen3.8, GLM-5.x Flash, Kimi Linear and OLMo Hybrid through its PyTorch
reference kernels unless the flash-linear-attention kernels are importable.
Those kernels are in fla-core, which installing flash-linear-attention with
--no-deps leaves out. Note the install in the hf_ptq README and the ptq
skill.

> *FP8 calibration over a large model with limited GPU memory is not recommended but possible with the [accelerate](https://huggingface.co/docs/accelerate/en/usage_guides/big_modeling) package. Please tune the device_map setting in [`example_utils.py`](./example_utils.py) if needed for model loading and the calibration process can be slow.*
> *Models with linear-attention layers (Qwen3-Next, Qwen3.5, Qwen3.8, GLM-5.x Flash, Kimi Linear, OLMo Hybrid) run those layers through Transformers' slow PyTorch reference kernels unless the [flash-linear-attention](https://github.com/fla-org/flash-linear-attention) kernels are installed. Install them without changing your torch and Transformers versions with `pip install --no-deps flash-linear-attention fla-core einops`; the kernels live in `fla-core`, so both packages are needed. On GLM-5.3-Flash over 4x GB300 they more than halved layerwise GPTQ calibration, mostly because the fused kernels need far less memory per sample, so a larger calibration batch fits.*

# INSTALL.md
# Installation
`fla` ships as two PyPI packages: `fla-core` (kernels in `fla/ops`, `fla/modules`, `fla/utils`) and `flash-linear-attention` (everything in `fla/layers` + `fla/models`, plus `fla-core` as a dep). Both follow the same backend-extras layout.
## Pick a backend
`torch` lives in a backend extra, not in the base deps, so wheel metadata is the same across backends. The `triton` flavor either ships in the extra (cuda / cpu / npu) or comes transitively from `torch` when you source it from the matching PyTorch wheel index (rocm / xpu).
Backend | Extra | Wheel index | `triton` flavor
--- | --- | --- | ---
CUDA | `[cuda]` | `https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu128` | `triton` (PyPI)
ROCm | `[rocm]` | `https://download.pytorch.org/whl/rocm7.2` | pulled by `torch` (`pytorch-triton-rocm` / `triton-rocm`)
XPU | `[xpu]` | `https://download.pytorch.org/whl/xpu` | pulled by `torch` (`pytorch-triton-xpu`)
NPU | `[npu]` | `https://triton-ascend.osinfra.cn/pypi/simple` | `triton-ascend`
CPU | `[cpu]` | `https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cpu` | `triton` (PyPI, import-only)
## From PyPI
CUDA can use a single command since `triton` lives on PyPI:
pip install flash-linear-attention[cuda]
For ROCm / XPU / CPU, do it in two steps so `torch` (and the matching `triton` flavor that `torch` pulls transitively) come from the PyTorch wheel index instead of letting the resolver mix and match (pip docs are explicit that there is no priority across configured indices). This mirrors the AMD-recommended pattern:
# ROCm
pip install --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/rocm7.2 torch
pip install flash-linear-attention[rocm]
# XPU
pip install --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/xpu torch
pip install flash-linear-attention[xpu]
# CPU
pip install --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cpu torch
pip install flash-linear-attention[cpu]
For nightly torch, swap `whl/<backend>` for `whl/nightly/<backend>` and add `--pre`.
## Ascend NPU
NPUs use `triton-ascend`, not upstream `triton`. Since `triton` is in backend extras (not base deps), the old "install fla, then `pip uninstall triton`, then install `triton-ascend`" dance is no longer needed.
# 1. install CANN 9.1.0 + source set_env.sh
# 2. install torch / torch_npu / triton-ascend, then fla with the npu extra
pip install torch==2.9.0 torch_npu==2.9.0.post6 torchvision==0.24.0
pip install triton-ascend==3.2.2 --extra-index-url=https://triton-ascend.osinfra.cn/pypi/simple
pip install flash-linear-attention[npu]
The `[npu]` extra pins `torch==2.9.0`, `torch_npu==2.9.0.post6`, `torchvision==0.24.0`, and `triton-ascend==3.2.2` (CANN 9.1.0 stack tested on A2). Install `triton-ascend` with `--extra-index-url` as shown above.

Document the Triton prerequisite for the --no-deps install.
--no-deps skips the dependencies of both packages, including triton. Upstream installs triton through backend extras, not base dependencies. On a PyTorch image without Triton, this command can succeed while fla.ops fails to import. Transformers then falls back to the reference path without an error. Add a note that Triton must be importable, or add an explicit Triton install step.

Review comment at @examples/hf_ptq/README.md at line 178:
Update the flash-linear-attention installation note to state that Triton must be
importable when using the `--no-deps` install command, or include an explicit
Triton installation step, so `fla.ops` can load its kernels.

Transformers binds the kernels from fla-core alone, which depends only on
einops, while flash-linear-attention pins Transformers. With the kernels
importable, Transformers also sends CPU tensors to them, which fails.

- **Model-specific dependencies**: Models with `trust_remote_code` may import packages not in the container (e.g., `mamba-ssm` for hybrid Mamba models). See Step 2.5. Use `EXTRA_PIP_DEPS` env var with the launcher, or install manually before running `hf_ptq.py`

Observed some bugs with fla-core<0.5.2 (Gated DeltaNet kernel computes packed THD sequences wrongly) hence recommend using newer version.

What does this PR do?
Type of change: documentation
Transformers runs the linear-attention layers of Qwen3-Next, Qwen3.5, Qwen3.8, GLM-5.x Flash, Kimi Linear and OLMo Hybrid through readable PyTorch reference kernels unless the flash-linear-attention kernels are importable. The reference path is slow and needs far more memory per sample, which caps the layerwise calibration batch. This adds a note to the
hf_ptqREADME and one line to the ptq skill on installing the kernels:pip install fla-core.fla-corealone is enough. The kernels Transformers looks for (fla.ops.kda.chunk_kda,fla.ops.gated_delta_rule.chunk_gated_delta_rule) live infla-core, which depends only oneinops. Theflash-linear-attentionpackage holds layers and models Transformers does not use, and pinstransformers>=5.6.2,<6.RuntimeError: 0 active drivers). That is also why the package is documented rather than added toexamples/hf_ptq/requirements.txt, which the example CI installs.Usage
