Test Megatron-Bridge quantized HF export against the Megatron exporter - #3066
NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6657 added AutoBridge.save_hf_pretrained_modelopt, which writes a ModelOpt-quantized Megatron model as a deployable quantized HF checkpoint by calling ModelOpt's functional export API. This PR:
Bumps the Megatron-Bridge commit that CI overlays on the NeMo container (.github/actions/megatron-from-source, and the matching commit in examples/megatron_bridge/README.md) from 1d9caf7 to 0652ea7, the #6657 merge commit. Its Megatron-LM submodule moves from ede2c58 to ed9c2c8.
Adds tests/gpu_megatron/torch/export/test_quantized_mbridge_export.py. It quantizes a tiny model, exports it with both export_mcore_gpt_to_hf and save_hf_pretrained_modelopt, and checks that the weights and scales are bit-identical and that the configs and quantization_config match. The Megatron exporter runs at TP=1, since it does not gather TP shards. The bridge exports at TP=1 on one GPU (the PR runners) and TP=2 on any multi-GPU host (the 2-GPU nightly runners), which also covers gathering its sharded weights and scales. TP stays at most 2 because the tiny models have 2 KV heads. At TP=2, input_scale is compared with rtol=2e-2: calibration reduces activations across ranks in a different order, so FP8 activation amaxes differ by up to ~0.5% from TP=1. Weights and weight scales stay bit-identical. The bridge's ignore list must exclude exactly the unquantized linear layers; the Megatron exporter's list spells its patterns differently and may miss some (it misses Qwen3.5's mlp.shared_expert_gate, which is unquantized in both). Cases: NVFP4 (Llama), FP8 (Qwen3), NVFP4 MLP-only (Nemotron-H: Mamba + attention + MoE), NVFP4 MLP-only (Qwen3.5-VL-MoE: GatedDeltaNet + MoE, vision tower unquantized as in quantize.py). Not covered yet because the bridge export rejects them: quantized Mamba / GatedDeltaNet input projections and GPT-OSS experts (OMNIML-5978); ModelOpt's Megatron exporter also fails on GPT-OSS NVFP4.
This keeps ModelOpt changes to the functional export API from silently diverging from the Megatron exporter's output in Megatron-Bridge. KV-cache export is not covered yet: Megatron-Bridge adds it once it pins a ModelOpt release with #2981 (tracked in OMNIML-6311).
In a clean nvcr.io/nvidia/nemo:26.08 container with the megatron-from-source overlay at 0652ea7 (2 GPUs), installing as the CI jobs do:
tests/gpu_megatron ([hf,dev-test,dev-fla]), including the new test: 464 passed, 44 skipped.
tests/examples/megatron_bridge ([hf,puzzletron,dev-test] plus the example requirements): 107 passed.
The new test with its current cases, in the same container: 4 passed on 2 GPUs (bridge at TP=2) and 4 passed on 1 GPU.
Not run: the nightly-only example tests.

Tests
Added checks that quantized exports from Megatron-Bridge match ModelOpt exports across Llama, Qwen3, Nemotron-H, and Qwen3.5 MoE-VL configurations. Comparisons cover exported weights and model configuration, including quantization exclusions, with tolerance for input-scale differences in multi-GPU runs.
Bump the Megatron-Bridge commit CI overlays on the NeMo container to
NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6657, which adds save_hf_pretrained_modelopt, and
check that it writes the same weights, scales and quantization config as
export_mcore_gpt_to_hf.

The action and README now pin Megatron-Bridge to a newer commit. A parameterized GPU test compares quantized Hugging Face exports from Megatron-Bridge and ModelOpt across four model and quantization configurations.

Compare quantized Hugging Face exports tests/gpu_megatron/torch/export/test_quantized_mbridge_export.py
The test covers four model and quantization configurations. It compares exported weight keys, shapes, dtypes, and values, along with configuration and ignored-layer patterns. For multi-GPU runs, it allows a relative tolerance of 2e-2 for input_scale values.
Cold multi-GPU runs may time out before the export comparison finishes. Move worker startup outside the timed call before merging.

reshape(weight.shape) applies to every tensor. A weight or non-scalar scale with the same element count but a different layout can therefore pass. Preserve the scalar per-tensor scale exception, but assert exact shapes for weights and other tensors.

Nudge: the parity test is clean and follows its vLLM fake-quant sibling, but its weight comparison doesn't check shapes, so it can miss a scale-layout regression.
Needs action:
Tighten line 85 of tests/gpu_megatron/torch/export/test_quantized_mbridge_export.py. Reshape only one-element (per-tensor scale) tensors and assert weight.shape == reference.shape for everything else. Today a flattened or reshaped block weight_scale with equal values would still pass.
Confirm whether save_hf_pretrained_modelopt writes hf_quant_config.json, which the Megatron exporter writes. Either compare it, or say in the PR why only config.json is compared.
No action needed:
The new file's header matches LICENSE_HEADER, so there is no licensing concern. The test-only change is well under the size budget.
The commit bump is in sync between action.yml and examples/megatron_bridge/README.md. No other file references the old commit.
Shape check: fixed in 85f305f. Only one-element tensors (per-tensor scales, which the Megatron exporter keeps 1-d) are reshaped; every other tensor must match the reference shape exactly. The 4 cases still pass.
hf_quant_config.json:save_hf_pretrained_modelopt does not write it, by design. vLLM, SGLang and TensorRT-LLM read quantization_config from config.json, which the test compares. hf_quant_config.json only repeats that config, and the bridge deletes a stale copy from the output directory (auto_bridge.py). Megatron-Bridge's functional test asserts that it is absent.

Approve: both concerns from the last review are resolved. This is a small test-only PR plus a CI pin bump, and it follows the existing vLLM fake-quant parity test.

No action needed:
✔️ Resolved since the last review: the exact-shape check (only one-element tensors are reshaped now, and everything else must match shape), and the hf_quant_config.json question. The author's reply says the bridge leaves that file out on purpose and that runtimes read quantization_config from config.json.
The commit bump matches in action.yml and examples/megatron_bridge/README.md, and nothing else references 1d9caf7.
Could we add a TP2 case, or run one of the existing cases at TP2 instead of TP1? That would also catch regressions in distributed weight/scale gathering, since the Bridge export API supports TP > 1.
@mxinO Done in 311800e, without adding test cases: the bridge now exports at TP over all GPUs (dist_workers). That is TP=1 on the 1-GPU PR runners and TP=2 on the 2-GPU nightly runners.
The reference still runs at TP=1 in a separate worker, since export_mcore_gpt_to_hf doesn't gather TP shards (it fails slicing the gated MLP at TP=2, and export_quantized_megatron_to_hf.py already rejects --tp_size > 1 for it). Weights and weight scales from the TP=2 bridge export match the TP=1 reference bit for bit. input_scale is compared with rtol=2e-2 on multi-GPU runs only: calibrating at TP=2 reduces activations across ranks in a different order, so the FP8 activation amaxes differ by up to ~0.5% from TP=1.
Ran in nemo:26.08 with Megatron-Bridge 0652ea7: 4 passed on 2 GPUs (bridge at TP=2) and 4 passed on 1 GPU.

The author reports all four cases passing on both one and two GPUs. The two Bridge pins match.
Earlier reviews record a canonical license-header match; the current snapshot provides no evidence of a new licensing issue.

✔️ Resolved: non-scalar shape preservation, intentional omission of hf_quant_config.json (6452556906), and requested TP coverage (6455040627, addressed by 6462881901 and the diff).
The author reports four cases passing on both one and two GPUs. Both Bridge pins match; earlier reviews record a canonical license-header match.
No new defects were established. Duplicate checking used the supplied history only; omitted discussion, repository navigation, and test execution were unavailable.
Existing helpers:_load now uses load_safetensors_dir from _test_utils/torch/export/unified_checkpoint.py. assert_exported_checkpoint_matches there compares an export with its unquantized source after dequantizing, within a tolerance, so it can't replace the bit-for-bit comparison of two exports; _bits and _excluded have no existing equivalent.
dist_workers: its world size is torch.cuda.device_count(), and the test passes that size as the bridge's TP size. Pools are cached per world size, so on one GPU both fixtures share the same pool; on two GPUs the 1-worker and 2-worker pools run one after the other. 4 passed on 2 GPUs (bridge at TP=2) and 4 passed on 1 GPU.
