What does this PR do?

Type of change: New feature

[2/5] of the sub-4-bit AutoQuantize series. [1/5] #3154 has merged, so this PR is based on main.

Series (merge in order): #3154 (merged) → #3151 → #3152 → #3153 → #3155

AutoQuantize calibrates and scores every searched format in one process, so its runtime is the sum over formats. Gradient and KL scores replay each candidate against the same reference, so a (group, format) score does not depend on the other searched formats, and the formats can run in separate processes without changing any score.

Why split by format rather than use the existing data-parallel scoring, or calibrate once and hand the calibrations to replay-only scoring workers: data-parallel scoring splits each candidate's batches across ranks, but every rank still calibrates every format, the dominant cost for GPTQ-based formats, and every forward synchronizes the ranks. Replay-only workers can start scoring only once the slowest calibration has finished, so they save no wall time over format shards, and each would hold every format's calibration, which did not fit next to a 74B model on one GPU in our runs. Format shards split calibration and scoring alike, need no process group, hold only their own formats' calibration, and a failed shard reruns alone.

  • mtq.auto_quantize(..., format_shard=(index, count)) calibrates and scores only every count-th searched format (in canonical compression order) and saves the shard's scores without solving. Every shard also calibrates the formats that groups hold fixed (fixed_quantization_config, and one-format module_search_spaces rules without no-quant), since those stay active while the other groups are scored.
  • mtq.merge_auto_quantize_checkpoints(shards, checkpoint) validates that the shards ran the same search, unions their calibration states and scores, and writes an ordinary checkpoint that restores, solves and re-solves other budgets like the unsharded search. It memory-maps the shard files on the CPU, so any host can merge them, including shards whose model was spread over several GPUs. It refuses shards whose search setups differ, including their calibration and scoring step counts, since scores sum over the batches; running every shard on the same weights and batches is up to the caller.

Usage

# one process per GPU
mtq.auto_quantize(fresh_model(), **search_args, checkpoint=f"shard{i}.pth", format_shard=(i, 5))
# then
mtq.merge_auto_quantize_checkpoints([f"shard{i}.pth" for i in range(5)], "merged.pth")
model, state = mtq.auto_quantize(fresh_model(), **search_args, checkpoint="merged.pth")

Testing

  • test_format_shards_merge_into_the_unsharded_search (gradient and KL): shards calibrate disjoint searched formats plus the format o_proj holds fixed, and the merged search reproduces the unsharded raw scores and selection. If shards calibrate only their own formats and the fixed recipe, the merged scores differ from the unsharded ones by up to 12% (gradient) and 5% (KL).
  • test_format_shards_saved_on_gpus_merge_on_a_host_without_them (GPU): shards saved from a GPU model, IQ1_S GPTQ codes included, merge with CUDA unavailable and restore with identical outputs. Without the CPU mapping the merge fails with Attempting to deserialize object on a CUDA device but torch.cuda.is_available() is False.
  • The same merge test also refuses a shard scored over one batch merged with one scored over two, retries the same model after a refused shard count (handed back unconverted), and refuses a symlink planted at the output path; each check fails without its fix.
  • tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_autoquant.py passes on this branch (84 tests).
  • Scratch checks on 2 GPUs, not in CI: a model split over both GPUs with device_map (IQ2_XXS with GPTQ, INT8, FP8; gradient and KL), and FSDP2 on 2 ranks (NVFP4 and FP8, each rank's files merged separately). In both, the merged shards reproduce the unsharded scores exactly and select the same formats.
  • Qwen3.6-35B-A3B: 5 format shards on 5 GB300 GPUs, ~15 min each (gradient), instead of one serial pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • AutoQuantize searches using gradient or KL-divergence scoring can distribute format scoring across shards, with each shard evaluating a portion of the searched formats.
    • Merge shard checkpoints into a single checkpoint before solving. The merged checkpoint supports solving and re-solving the search, including with different search budgets.
    • Shard searches can resume from checkpoints when calibration and scoring step counts match.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Shard merging validates that checkpoints form a complete, compatible set and rejects missing, duplicate, or invalid results.
    • Sharded searches must be merged before solving.

Walkthrough

AutoQuantize supports format-sharded calibration and scoring for gradient and KL-divergence searches. A checkpoint-merging API combines shard states into a search state that can proceed as an unsharded search.

Changes: Format-sharded AutoQuantize

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shard configuration and API
modelopt/torch/quantization/algorithms.py, modelopt/torch/quantization/model_quant.py, CHANGELOG.rst
auto_quantize accepts format_shard. The search validates the shard index, count, method, and checkpoint requirements. KV-cache searches reject this option. The API documentation describes the supported methods and merge process.
Shard calibration and scoring
modelopt/torch/quantization/algorithms.py, tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_autoquant.py
Shards assign searched formats round-robin. Calibration and scoring use shard-specific formats. Unscored candidates retain None raw scores. Shard searches stop before constraint solving. Unit tests cover shard resumption, step-count validation, and score behavior.
Checkpoint merge and search validation
modelopt/torch/quantization/algorithms.py, modelopt/torch/quantization/model_quant.py, tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_autoquant.py, tests/gpu/torch/quantization/test_ggml_gptq_cuda.py
The merge API validates and combines shard checkpoints, then saves the merged state. Unit and GPU tests compare merged-search results with unsharded results.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 92a18

The merge test may miss a CUDA dependency because it does not run in a genuinely CPU-only process. This is a bounded test gap, so the PR is mergeable with owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 92a18

The new workflow validates shard compatibility and protects existing merge destinations. No security boundary bypass was established. Remaining risks concern caller-managed checkpoint provenance and recovery from interrupted writes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Caller-selected shard files reach deserialization before semantic merge validation; their calibration state subsequently reaches model restoration. The demonstrated scope is the merging process and derived quantized model. Cross-tenant or privileged-service exposure is not established by the supplied deployment evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new loader uses CPU mapping without requesting unrestricted pickle loading. The declared torch dependency supports the restricted default, although the unchanged helper intentionally permits an environment override. Exclusive output creation refuses an existing file or final-component symlink; setup checks provide compatibility validation, not checkpoint authentication.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Merge removes partial output after handled exceptions and leaves its input shards untouched, permitting retry. It writes directly to the final destination, so abrupt termination can leave a partial file that a same-path retry refuses. Shard saves inherit direct-path writing from the unchanged checkpoint writer. These are recovery limitations, not demonstrated security exploits.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider atomic checkpoint publication that preserves the merger's no-overwrite guarantee, so interrupted writes are not exposed as completed checkpoints.
  • proposed — If shards will cross independently managed workers or trust domains, consider binding them to a shared run identity and model/data provenance, with validation of overlapping calibration state. This would strengthen the current caller-managed same-input contract.

…from the source weights (#3154)

### What does this PR do?

Type of change: Bug fix / new feature

[1/5] of the sub-4-bit AutoQuantize series (merge in order).

Series (merge in order): #3154 → #3151 → #3152 → #3153 → #3155

GPTQ and imatrix overwrite the weights they quantize. `auto_quantize`
rejected both, and accepting them as-is would let one candidate's
calibration change the weights every later candidate — and the
unquantized scoring reference — sees.

AutoQuantize now snapshots (to CPU) only the weights a GPTQ/imatrix
candidate's calibration rewrites: the parameters its enabled weight
quantizers cover, and for imatrix alone only those imatrix encodes (not
Q8_0; a fused projection when any of its experts is). After such a
candidate calibrates, its GGML quantizers replay the codes it pinned
while the source weights are restored for the next candidate; the
snapshot is freed before sensitivity scoring. After the solve, the
selected candidates' weights are left as their codes decode, as a plain
GPTQ run leaves them, and no candidate is left replaying. GGML fake
quant now returns exactly the reconstruction export decodes, so scoring
and the exported model see the same weights (BF16 included).

Refused before the model is converted: any candidate with an enabled
layerwise `export_dir`, empty included, whether its options are a dict
or a `LayerwiseConfig`, whose export would leave the model in export
form before scoring (`hf_ptq.py` already refused it for AutoQuantize
recipes); and, in a search with a weight-rewriting candidate, any
candidate whose layerwise `checkpoint_dir` resume restores the layers'
weights into new Parameters the source-weight restore cannot reach
(`calib_mutates_weights=False` resumes are accepted). Refused before any
calibration: a weight-rewriting candidate whose weight quantizer is not
a single GGML quantizer or rotates the weight, or whose algorithm list
runs anything besides GPTQ, imatrix and max (AWQ or SmoothQuant would
transform the weight GPTQ encodes); and meta or DTensor weights it would
rewrite, weights stored packed or scaled (a native FP8 checkpoint's), or
ones whose storage another parameter shares (tied weights, or views of
them). These checks need the converted quantizers to know which weights
a candidate rewrites, so `auto_quantize` hands back the unconverted
modules, and the configs that conversion changed (including nested
sub-configs), when the search fails before calibrating any candidate,
and the same model can be searched again. Only a search with a
weight-rewriting candidate saves the modules for this, and it drops them
once these checks pass, so calibration and scoring never hold the
weights conversion replaces (HF Conv1D's transposed copies); other
searches save nothing. A failure during calibration restores the source
weights and drops the modes that calibration added. `auto_quantize`
hands back the pre-quant-scale folding policy on every exit, including a
failure during scoring. Weights a calibration leaves alone (imatrix on
Q8_0) simply quantize the source weight. NVFP4/FP8-only searches take no
snapshot and never slice fused-expert weights after the solve.
`auto_quantize` now accepts `gptq`, `imatrix` and algorithm lists such
as `[gptq, imatrix]`.

#### Why snapshot and replay

Every candidate after a GPTQ/imatrix calibration, and the unquantized
scoring reference, must see the source weights. The alternatives cost
more:
- **Copy the model, or its state dict:** this holds every weight, about
70 GB for Qwen3.6-35B-A3B in BF16. The snapshot holds only the weights a
rewriting candidate quantizes, on the host, and is freed before scoring.
- **Make GPTQ/imatrix leave weights alone:** this would change
calibrators that `mtq.quantize` shares, and the chosen codes would still
have to be kept somewhere.

The GGML quantizer already pins those codes for export, so replaying the
pin makes the scored, selected and exported weights the same codes.

#### Reading order

1. `_AutoQuantizeBaseSearcher.before_search`: snapshot
(`_snapshot_source_weights`; its checks are `_rewritten_weight` and
`_check_restorable`), then for each candidate calibrate, replay its pins
and restore the source weights.
2. `_write_selected_codes_to_weights` (after the solve), and
`GGMLFormat._pinned_rows` / `full_pin` (the replay).
3. `auto_quantize`: the window in which a failure hands back the
unconverted modules, and the folding policy it hands back on every exit.

### Usage

```python
iq2_gptq = {
    "quant_cfg": [{"quantizer_name": "*", "enable": False},
                  {"quantizer_name": "*weight_quantizer",
                   "cfg": {"num_bits": "iq2_s", "block_sizes": {-1: 256}, "backend": "ggml", "effective_bits": 2.5625}}],
    "algorithm": [{"method": "gptq", "block_size": 256, "perc_damp": 0.3, "importance_weighted": True}, {"method": "imatrix"}],
}
model, state = mtq.auto_quantize(model, constraints={"effective_bits": 3.0},
                                 quantization_formats=[(iq2_gptq, "IQ2_S_GPTQ"), mtq.NVFP4_DEFAULT_CFG], ...)
```

### Testing

- New tests in `tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_ggml_gptq.py`,
`test_autoquant.py`, `plugins/test_fused_experts.py` and
`tests/gpu/torch/quantization/test_ggml_gptq_cuda.py`. I reverted each
fix in place and checked that its test fails. They cover:
  - other candidates' scores are unaffected by GPTQ;
- mixed selection: a GPTQ layer next to a BF16 layer, a GGML entry
replacing an earlier INT4 entry, and imatrix on Q8_0;
- the snapshot holds only rewritten weights (a fused `down_proj` that is
disabled or Q8_0), takes a whole fused `gate_up_proj` with one Q8_0
expert, and a BF16 selection hands back the source weights;
- refusals (non-GGML, tied, an aliased view, a rotated GPTQ or imatrix
target, AWQ then GPTQ, a layerwise `checkpoint_dir`, native FP8 weights
(GPU), and fused MoE whose root, nested and experts' configs conversion
changes) hand back the unconverted model and its configs, which searches
again;
- calibration failures (GPTQ rewrite then failure, `[gptq, layerwise
imatrix]` failing midway) restore the weights, the folding policy and
the mode list;
  - the folding policy comes back after a scoring failure;
  - exact BF16 replay;
  - no fused-expert indexing after a search without pins;
  - an `algorithm: []` candidate keeps the saved state restorable.
- Layerwise directories (`test_huggingface.py`), on a tiny Llama with
discoverable decoder layers: an FP8 candidate with an `export_dir`, with
an empty `export_dir`, and with a `checkpoint_dir` beside a Q8_0 GPTQ
candidate, each given as a dict and as a `LayerwiseConfig`, is refused
before conversion, leaving the modules, the weights and the working
directory untouched, and the same model searches again. Without the
refusals, the layers are exported and scoring fails on the packed
weights, or the max candidate's checkpoint is written.
- Conv1D weight lifetime (`test_huggingface.py`): an INT8 search saves
no module state, and a Q8_0 GPTQ search drops it before calibration, so
the weights conversion replaces are dead in every calibration and
scoring forward.
- Regression check against the base commit (RTX 6000 Ada, BF16, FP8 +
INT4 searches): a 24-layer GPT-2 (Conv1D), a 16-layer Llama and a
fused-MoE Qwen3, with gradient scoring and with KL for Llama, give the
same scores, selections and output logits, the same search time (within
4%) and the same memory. On GPT-2 the weights held after conversion are
0 MiB, against 576 MiB before 5acdcc4.
- Unit suites `tests/unit/torch/quantization` + `tests/unit/recipe` on
CPU (16 xdist workers): 2151 passed. The rest fail the same way on
`main` at this branch's base on the test host:
  - diffusers lacks `q_bmm_quantizer` (4 failures);
  - `test_diffusers_wan_conv3d` fails to collect (16 errors);
- one to four `test_nemotron_3_5_super_vl_autoquant_recipe` cases fail
under xdist and pass serially.
- `pre-commit run mypy --all-files` passes; ruff check and ruff format
pass on the touched files.
- Rollback cost, paid only by searches with a GPTQ/imatrix candidate:
saving the module attributes takes 2 MiB and 0.16 s on Qwen3.6-35B-A3B
(837 modules), and 69 MiB on a 24.6k-module non-fused MoE.
- GPU (RTX 6000 Ada): `tests/gpu/torch/quantization -k "auto_quant or
autoquant or ggml or gptq or imatrix"` 57 passed, including
`test_fsdp2_autoquant.py` and the native FP8 refusal. The deepspeed and
onnx packages on the host stop 3 files from collecting.
- Stack restacked on this; the same unit suites at [5/5]: 2148 passed,
with the same failures.
- Qwen3.6-35B-A3B on GB300: searches over IQ2_{XXS,XS,S} (imatrix and
local GPTQ), NVFP4, FP8, BF16; see PR 5 for results.

### Additional Information

Supersedes #3082 … #3057 and #3113 … #3120 with a smaller design (~720
source lines across the series).

Synced with main by a merge (99f82c8), which keeps the commits the
review threads cite. #3197 made the IQ formats re-encode a weight under
its pinned scales and importance ahead of the pinned-rows lookup that
honours `PIN_OVERRIDES_WEIGHT`, so during a search a GPTQ or imatrix
candidate would have quantized the source weight under its scales
instead of replaying its codes; b7be410 puts the override first there
too (caught by
`test_a_replayed_pin_fake_quantizes_to_exactly_its_decoding_in_bf16`).

AutoQuantize calibrates and scores every searched format in one process,
so its runtime is the sum over formats. The gradient scorer replays each
candidate against the same unquantized layer output and gradient, so a
(group, format) score does not depend on the other formats: the formats
can be split across processes without changing any score.

auto_quantize(format_shard=(index, count)) calibrates and scores only
every count-th searched format (the fixed recipe on every shard, as it
shapes the scoring reference) and saves the shard's scores without
solving. merge_auto_quantize_checkpoints() checks that the shards ran
the same search, unions their calibration states and scores, and writes
an ordinary checkpoint that restores, solves and re-solves like the
unsharded search.

A one-format module_search_spaces rule without no-quant keeps its format active while the
other groups are scored, so that format's calibration shapes their scores. A format shard
calibrated only its own formats and the fixed recipe, so a held format was calibrated by the
shard that owned it, or by none, and the other shards scored against the uncalibrated group:
the merged scores no longer matched the unsharded search. Every shard now calibrates the
formats non-configurable groups hold.

The merge also copies only the containers it fills instead of deep-copying the first shard's
calibrated tensors.

A shard's checkpoint holds its calibration on the GPUs that produced it, so
merge_auto_quantize_checkpoints failed on any host with fewer GPUs: a CPU node,
or a one-GPU process merging shards that each spanned a node's GPUs. Memory-map
the shard files on the CPU instead. The restore moves each calibration onto the
model's devices, and the merge reads only the tensors it keeps.

Bot review (gpt-6.1-sol) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Changes requested: shard merging can silently combine differently scaled scores, and its loading and validation paths need hardening.

Needs action:

  • Persist and validate calibration/scoring step counts in algorithms.py; add a merge regression with mismatched num_score_steps (see inline).
  • Load shard tensors on CPU in model_quant.py; cover merging CUDA-origin checkpoints without their source devices (see inline).
  • Restore the model after shard-cardinality validation fails in before_search; test retrying the same model (see inline).
  • Explain in the PR body why format-level checkpoint merging is preferred over existing data-parallel scoring or shared-calibration/replay-only workers.

No action needed:

  • The existing reused-module test edit adapts its fixture to scored_choices without removing assertions.

[P2] Include the scoring workload in the shard invariants. Neither num_calib_steps nor num_score_steps is persisted, so otherwise identical shards run with different step counts pass every check here. Both scoring methods accumulate contributions across batches without normalizing them: for example, scoring one owned format over one batch and another over two batches produces incomparable sensitivities, which the merged solver then treats as one search. Persist and compare these counts before unioning scores, and extend the integration test with a mismatched-workload merge that is rejected. The documentation should also distinguish these checks from caller-managed equality of model weights and actual batches.

Fixed in 1f44a43: shards record num_calib_steps and num_score_steps in the search state, and _SHARD_INVARIANT_STATE compares them, so the merge refuses shards scored over different counts. test_format_shards_merge_into_the_unsharded_search merges a shard scored over one batch with one scored over two and expects the refusal. The merge_auto_quantize_checkpoints docstring now says which setup the merge checks and that keeping the weights and batches the same is the caller's job.

[P2] Load these checkpoints with map_location="cpu". safe_load delegates directly to torch.load without a device mapping, while get_quantizer_state_dict saves the calibrated buffers on their current devices. Consequently, this metadata/tensor union requires every checkpoint's original CUDA ordinal to exist, fails in a CPU-only merge process, and unnecessarily retains all input shards on GPUs. Loading on CPU avoids those constraints; restore_quantizer_state subsequently calls the modules' modelopt_post_restore to place buffers on the destination model before loading their values. Add coverage for CUDA-origin shard checkpoints merged without relying on their original device placement.

Fixed in 81bfb30: the merge memory-maps the shard files on the CPU (map_location="cpu", mmap=True), and the restore moves each calibration onto the model's devices. test_format_shards_saved_on_gpus_merge_on_a_host_without_them (tests/gpu) merges shards saved from a GPU model with CUDA unavailable and restores them with identical outputs; without the mapping it fails with Attempting to deserialize object on a CUDA device.

[P2] This new validation can leave the caller's model permanently converted. With two non-weight-rewriting formats and format_shard=(0, 3), _other_shards_recipes raises because the count exceeds the two searched formats, but auto_quantize has already applied the conversion and inserted hparams. Its rollback is installed only for weight-rewriting candidates, so correcting the count and retrying on that same model fails with Model must not be quantized!. Please validate cardinality before mutation where possible, or roll back this pre-calibration failure for sharded searches too. Add a same-model retry regression; this follows AGENTS.md's validate-before-mutating requirement.

Fixed in 1f44a43: auto_quantize now installs its pre-calibration rollback for format-shard searches too, so a refused shard count hands back the unconverted model. The merge test refuses format_shard=(0, 99) on a model, then runs shard 0 on that same model, whose scores still merge into the unsharded search.

…d's model

- Shards record num_calib_steps and num_score_steps, and the merge refuses
  shards whose counts differ: scores sum over the batches, so shards scored
  over different counts are not comparable. Keeping the weights and batches
  the same stays with the caller, as the merge's docstring now says.
- A format shard refused before any calibration, e.g. for a count the search
  cannot split, hands back the unconverted model, as weight-rewriting searches
  already did, so the caller can retry on the same model.
- The merged checkpoint is created exclusively, so a file or symlink that
  appears at the output path after the existence check is refused rather
  than written through.

Changes requested: workload validation can still be bypassed by shard resumes and checkpoints lacking step counts.

Needs action:

  • Fix before_search to validate restored workload counts before reusing calibration or scores; add an interrupted-shard resume regression (see inline).
  • Reject missing or None step counts in every input to merge_auto_quantize_shards; extend the merge regression (see inline).

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Five earlier concerns addressed, including fresh-shard workload comparison, CPU-mapped loading, same-model rollback, exclusive output creation, and design rationale.
  • The reused-module fixture edit retains its assertions and matches the new scored_choices interface.

Bot comment.

[P2] Validate restored workloads before overwriting these fields. For example, interrupt shard 0 after calibration with num_calib_steps=1, then resume it on a fresh model with num_calib_steps=2. The existing calibration is restored unchanged, but the scoring checkpoint now records 2. Merging it with a freshly calibrated two-step shard passes the invariant check despite different calibration workloads. A completed checkpoint also returns relabeled counts while skipping scoring. Compare the saved calibration count when calibration exists, and the saved scoring count when scores exist, before reuse; retain ordinary unsharded budget re-solving compatibility. Please extend the integration test with an interrupted-shard resume using changed counts.

Fixed in cb6dea0: restored calibration and scores now keep the step counts recorded with them, and a shard refuses to reuse either under different counts. A completed checkpoint is therefore no longer relabeled. An unsharded search still reuses them; the test re-solves the merged checkpoint with num_score_steps=1. The test resumes an interrupted shard with a changed num_calib_steps and a completed one with a changed num_score_steps, and expects both refusals. Resuming with the same counts then reproduces the shard's scores. That last step also needed a fix: a search stopped between calibration and scoring failed to resume with a KeyError, because safe_save stores candidate_stats as a plain dict, which scoring indexes as a defaultdict. This fails on main too. load_search_checkpoint now restores it as a defaultdict.

Bot comment.

[P2] The earlier missing-count concern remains open: state.get(key) and merged.get(key) both return None when every shard lacks these fields, so those checkpoints pass validation. Earlier revisions of this PR wrote exactly that schema, allowing one-batch and two-batch scores to be combined without detecting their different scales. Require non-None num_calib_steps and num_score_steps on every shard, including the first, before combining states. Extend the existing merge test with checkpoints missing the required counts.

Fixed in cb6dea0: merge_auto_quantize_shards requires num_calib_steps and num_score_steps on every shard, including the first, before combining them. The test removes both counts from every shard and expects the merge to be refused.

- Restored calibration and scores keep the step counts they were computed
  with. A shard resumed under other counts is refused, so its merge compares
  the counts its scores came from; an unsharded search still reuses them, e.g.
  to re-solve another budget.
- The merge refuses shards that recorded no counts, as earlier versions saved
  them, since missing counts compare equal whatever the workloads.
- A search interrupted between calibration and scoring now resumes: safe_save
  stores candidate_stats as a dict, which scoring after the resume indexed by
  name as a defaultdict.

[P2] The earlier failed-write concern is still present. Opening with "xb" creates the destination before safe_save runs; a disk-full error or KeyboardInterrupt leaves a partial checkpoint behind. Retrying the merge then raises FileExistsError, while passing that path to auto_quantize reaches BaseSearcher.load_search_checkpoint and attempts to deserialize the corrupt file. Clean up failures after exclusive creation succeeds, without deleting an existing file when opening fails, and extend the existing merge test to verify that a failed write permits retry.

Fixed in 92a18ba: the merge now removes the checkpoint only after its own exclusive open has created it and the write then fails. A path that already existed still fails the open and is left alone. The merge test makes the write fail after writing part of the file, checks that no file remains, and then retries the merge successfully.

The merged checkpoint is created exclusively before it is written, so a write
that failed (a full disk, an interrupt) left a partial file behind: the retry
then refused the existing path, and auto_quantize would try to restore from
it. Remove the file when the write fails; a path that already existed still
fails the exclusive open and is left alone.
