Fixes #1627

What it does

Fixes geographic searches omitting stops whose actual coordinates are inside the requested bounding box. All three spatial queries now use RTree overlap to find candidates, then check the original stop coordinates against the exact bounds so outside stops stay excluded.

Root cause

SQLite stores RTree coordinates as 32-bit floating-point values and rounds their bounds outward. The previous queries required the entire rounded index rectangle to fit inside the search box, which could exclude a valid stop near an edge.

The fix keeps the spatial index for candidate selection and uses stops.lat and stops.lon for the final inclusive bounds check. SQLite documents this rounding behavior.

Testing

  • Test failing on main before this change: With the new regression test and the query file from b0ad9a1d, the lower-latitude case expected inside-edge, on-edge, and inside-center, but returned only inside-center. The stop, stop-ID, and route queries all failed.

Relevant failure output:

--- FAIL: TestSpatialQueriesWithinBounds_RTreeRounding
    --- FAIL: TestSpatialQueriesWithinBounds_RTreeRounding/min_lat
        --- FAIL: TestSpatialQueriesWithinBounds_RTreeRounding/min_lat/GetActiveStopsWithinBounds
        --- FAIL: TestSpatialQueriesWithinBounds_RTreeRounding/min_lat/GetStopIDsWithinBounds
        --- FAIL: TestSpatialQueriesWithinBounds_RTreeRounding/min_lat/GetActiveRoutesWithinBounds

The expanded test passes on this branch and covers all four edges, all four corners, inside/on/outside positions, route filters, and result limits.

  • Manual check: Loaded the current Sound Transit rail feed and sent the boundary requests below through Maglev's HTTP router before and after the fix. Compared those responses with the live Java API. Before the fix, both location endpoints returned empty lists; afterward, the stop and route IDs matched Java.

The same paths and query parameters were used for Maglev. Its responses were captured through the actual HTTP router using httptest.NewRecorder and temporary before/after builds.

  • Java server, feeds and date checked: Live Puget Sound Java API, version 2.5.53-cs, bundle OCT26_2_1, checked on 2026-10-17 at approximately 18:47 UTC.

Maglev loaded Sound Transit rail feed SC-Fall-2026.5, valid 2026-10-01 through 2027-03-26, from https://www.soundtransit.org/GTFS-rail/40_gtfs.zip.

Both sources identify Westlake stop 40_1108 at (47.611450, -122.337532), and their route IDs agree for these requests. The complete Java feed archive was not available for byte-level comparison.

Maglev before: b0ad9a1d. Maglev after: 29015408. Its clock was fixed to the Java config response time so service-date filtering used the same date.

routes-for-location [] 40_100479, 40_2LINE 40_100479, 40_2LINE

  • If Maglev intentionally differs from Java: This fix introduces no intentional difference in spatial inclusion. The complete routes response matches Java after excluding currentTime. The stop IDs and coordinates also match.

Two existing stop-response differences remain: Maglev reports locationType: 5 where Java reports 0, and Java includes a parent-stop reference with includeReferences=false while Maglev leaves references empty. A wider-box control request returned identical Maglev responses before and after this fix, confirming those differences predate it.

Checklist

Ready-for-review requirement: Every box must be checked. If any statement is not true, keep the pull request as Draft.

  • This PR addresses one issue.
  • It is under ~200 changed lines, or the description says why it can't be split.
  • For a bug fix, the new or changed test fails on main and passes on this branch.
  • Each commit is one logical change with a clear message.
  • I did not hand-edit sqlc-generated files in gtfsdb/ or testdata/openapi.yml (synced from upstream).
  • Handlers pass r.Context() to DB/service calls, not context.Background().
  • The response comparison above is filled in, or this PR doesn't change a Java-served response.
  • Any new endpoint matches testdata/openapi.yml, or an issue asking for it is open on OneBusAway/sdk-config.
  • I read every line of this diff and can explain it if asked.

Notes for reviewers

  • 185 changed lines across two files: 179 additions and 6 deletions.
  • gtfsdb/stops_rtree.go is an existing hand-written query file, explicitly documented as such because sqlc does not support RTree virtual tables. No sqlc-generated output or OpenAPI file was edited.
  • No handlers or endpoints were added or changed. Existing request contexts, service filtering, and route parameter binding are preserved.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Spatial searches now include stops located exactly on the requested boundary and exclude stops just outside it. This applies to active-stop, stop-ID, and route searches, including searches filtered by route ID or result limit. Stops on rectangle edges and corners are handled consistently, while stops just inside the requested area remain included.

📝 Walkthrough

The active-stop, stop-ID, and active-route spatial queries now use RTree overlap checks to select candidates, then filter candidates by original stop coordinates. Tests cover points on and around rectangle boundaries.

The description follows the repository template and includes the issue reference, change summary, root cause, regression testing, validation commands, response comparison, checklist, and reviewer notes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1627 requires all three spatial queries to use RTree overlap for candidates and inclusive original-coordinate checks. gtfsdb/stops_rtree.go applies this pattern to GetActiveStopsWithinBounds, GetStopIDsWithinBounds, and GetActiveRoutesWithinBounds. gtfsdb/stops_rtree_test.go tests inside, on-edge, and outside stops across edges and corners, plus route filters and limits. The supplied test report states that the regression fails at the merge base and passes at the reviewed head.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The supplied change summary identifies changes only in gtfsdb/stops_rtree.go and gtfsdb/stops_rtree_test.go. The SQL changes implement issue #1627. The test fixture and assertions support the required spatial-query behavior. No unrelated endpoint, schema, generated-file, or API change is demonstrated.

Document the RTree exception in the repository policy.

gtfsdb/stops_rtree.go is manually maintained because sqlc does not support RTree virtual tables. However, the current guidance sanctions only gtfsdb/fts_queries.go. A local comment does not change that policy.

If these queries remain manual, add gtfsdb/stops_rtree.go to the sanctioned exceptions in CONTRIBUTING.md and document the sqlc limitation. Otherwise, move the queries to gtfsdb/query.sql and regenerate them.

LGTM @SaadShakeel1, nice tight fix and the overlap-only case being caught by the outside stops is a good touch. One small thing inline about the comment covering all three queries.

This reads as the doc comment for getActiveStopsWithinBounds only, but getStopIDsWithinBounds and the route template rely on the same two-step check. Could you say it applies to all three spatial queries (or merge it into the file comment above) so nobody drops the exact check from one of them later?

I will move the explanation to the shared file level comment and clarify that all three spatial queries rely on the same two step filtering.

Thanks for the review, I have updated the comment. Should I also document stops_rtree.go as a manually maintained exception in CONTRIBUTING.md, like fts_queries.go?
