What changed

  • adds strict official Transformation Plan 0.1 and 0.2 models/codecs
  • adds SPSS Frontend 0.2 parsing, binding, exact binary64 conversion, and manifest conformance
  • applies official plans atomically in place across SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and Dolt profiles
  • adds compact apply audit metadata while keeping Dolt commits and history caller-owned
  • removes the legacy package-local plan v1 plus STRING/DELETE commands
  • updates capabilities, migration guidance, documentation, and service CI filters

Why

This makes the PHP adapter conform to the published OpenStatSpec transformation and SPSS frontend contracts without creating derived datasets, copied data tables, or a second rollback/version layer.

Validation

  • fresh LF-normalized composer check: 467 tests, 2,755 assertions, 72 unconfigured-service skips
  • PHP lint, PHP-CS-Fixer, and PHPStan passed
  • official manifest coverage: Plan 0.1/0.2 and Frontend 0.2
  • live implementation evidence during development: MySQL 8.4.9, MariaDB 11.4.8, Dolt 2.2.2
  • independent per-task and whole-branch reviews passed

Remote GitHub Actions service matrices and Codex review are expected to provide the final hosted verification.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added official Transformation Plan, SPSS Frontend, and In-Place Transformation support.
    • Added computation, conditional assignment, formatting, labels, value labels, and measurement-level commands.
    • Added deterministic validation, hashing, source diagnostics, and exact numeric handling.
    • Added atomic execution, rollback protection, audit records, and database-specific safeguards.
  • Documentation
    • Updated transformation, architecture, migration, changelog, and release-readiness guidance.
  • Breaking Changes
    • Removed the legacy transformation API and unsupported STRING and DELETE VARIABLES commands.
  • Tests
    • Expanded official conformance and database integration coverage.

P2 Badge Reject reserved targets for in-place RECODE

When the input schema contains a variable such as __hidden, an in-place RECODE __hidden ... takes the replace path and skips validateTargetName(), so the frontend successfully emits a plan that the executor later rejects with reserved_target_name. Validate replacement targets as well as INTO targets so compilation does not return an unusable plan.

Addressed at d5ad3f3 (refactor: pull validateTargetName out of the targetMode === Create branch so it runs for both create and replace RECODE targets). The replace path now also rejects reserved target names, so RECODE __hidden ... no longer compiles into a plan the executor would reject later.

P2 Badge Inspect the real MySQL-family case-order column

On MySQL, MariaDB, and Dolt, this branch fabricates __case_ordinal from catalog metadata instead of inspecting the physical table. If that required column has been dropped or the table binding is otherwise malformed, assertPhysicalBindings() still passes because its readability query selects only registered variables, allowing the transformation and success audit to commit against a table that no longer preserves the required case-order invariant.

Addressed at d5ad3f3 (refactor: drop the __case_ordinal fabrication for MySQL-family and query information_schema.columns the same way PostgreSQL and SQLite do). assertPhysicalBindings now sees the real physical columns, so an apply against a wide table missing the case-order column is rejected with invalid_catalog before any mutation.

P2 Badge Allow SYSMIS when creating a numeric target

For a string source, this rejects RECODE color ('R' = 1) (ELSE = SYSMIS) INTO code., even though code is inferred as numeric and system-missing is representable there. The same command without the explicit ELSE is accepted because line 323 independently defaults a create-target recode to SystemMissingResult, so two equivalent unmatched behaviors compile differently. Validate SYSMIS against the inferred target type rather than the source type.

Addressed at d6f4a8a (relax the SYSMIS rejection: recodeResult now only fails SYSMIS when the source is string AND the target mode is Replace). RECODE color ('R' = 1) (ELSE = SYSMIS) INTO code. is accepted because the inferred numeric target can represent system-missing; the implicit ELSE = SYSMIS path was already correct, so both forms now compile identically.

P2 Badge Reject reserved RECODE targets while decoding plans

When an external plan contains a RECODE target beginning with __, PlanCodec::fromArray() accepts and canonicalizes it because this path only requires a non-empty string; the same codec already applies targetName() to assignment targets, and execution later rejects the RECODE with reserved_target_name. This lets callers validate and hash a plan that cannot be applied, so route the RECODE target through the reserved-name validation too.

Addressed at d6f4a8a (swap recodeOperation's nonEmptyString(['target'], ...) for targetName(['target'], ...), matching assign and conditionalAssign). PlanCodec::fromArray() now rejects __-prefixed RECODE targets at decode time, so the canonical hash and any caller-side validation match what the executor accepts.

OfficialInPlaceTransformation01Test and OfficialInPlaceTransformation02Test
both carried near-identical scalar/column/rows helpers around the
shared PDO access pattern. Hoist them into a single trait at
tests/Support/OfficialFixturePdoAccessors.php so any future official
conformance suite can adopt the same one-stop accessors instead of
re-defining them per test class.

The trait uses prepare() + execute() for every query so callers can
pass positional parameters uniformly; column() preserves the original
list<mixed> shape (no strval coercion, which previously broke null
round-trip in numeric comparison tests).
…rent commit

assertOfficialDoltContextChanged previously faked the post-mutation
evidence by returning a synthetic head hash from an in-process mock
DoltEvidenceReader. The reviewer wanted end-to-end evidence that the
guard actually detects a concurrent commit on the same branch.

Open a second PDO against the same isolated Dolt database via
doltConcurrentSession() and have the reader call DOLT_COMMIT on that
second session before the executors afterExecution check runs, so
the executor observes a real head advance through its own session.
The reader still falls back to the local row-read assertion for the
mutation observation so the existing case fixtures stay valid; the
new helper only contributes the head-hash the guard compares.
Two cosmetic follow-ups from the final review:
- Collapse the stray quoted-string whitespace concat in the
concurrent-commit test back into a single literal.
- Update doltConcurrentSession()s docblock to reflect that the
returned PDO is held by the anonymous reader closure, not by
  tearDown() state.
The previous review added the validation but no focused unit test
asserted the new rejection paths. SourceSpanTest exercises the
canonical constructor path plus three rejection branches:
- inverted offsets (startOffset > endOffset)
- inverted line position (startLine > endLine)
- inverted column on the same line (startColumn > endColumn)

The cover() helper gets a positive test and one rejection case
(end span positioned before the start span) to lock the asymmetric
boundary check.
If a previous migrateMySqlFamilyByRename() reached the RENAME TABLE
step but crashed before the final DROP, the archive table name would
be reused and fail with "Table already exists" on the next attempt.
The next migrate() short-circuits via mySqlAcceptsVersion02() so
this DROP only fires when the migration actually runs; it is a
no-op on clean state and a clean-up on partial failure.
The previous comment conflated two scenarios: it described what happens
when the cleanup is *not* needed (migrate() short-circuits via
mySqlAcceptsVersion02()) in a way that made it look like justification
for the cleanup. Replace with a direct statement that the DROP only
executes when migrateMySqlFamilyByRename() actually runs, i.e. when a
prior attempt reached the RENAME step but crashed before its DROP.

P1 Badge Fold MySQL schema aliases before ownership checks

When lower_case_table_names is 1 or 2, MySQL-family database/schema names are also compared case-insensitively, but this branch returns explicit schemas without folding them. Two dataset rows using schema names such as Analytics and analytics can therefore resolve to the same physical table while each passes the exclusive-owner check, allowing an apply to mutate a table owned by another logical dataset.

Fixed in 438423f. canonicalPhysicalSchema now folds explicit MySQL-family schema names through the same cached @@lower_case_table_names decision used for physical table names. Null schemas are folded after DATABASE()/current-schema resolution as well, so Analytics and analytics cannot bypass exclusive ownership on case-insensitive MySQL/MariaDB/Dolt deployments.

P2 Badge Drop stale staging tables before rebuilding

If a MySQL-family migration is interrupted after this CREATE TABLE but before the atomic rename—such as from a transient failure while copying rows—the _v04_pending table remains. Every subsequent migration attempt reaches the same CREATE TABLE and fails because that staging table already exists, so the migration cannot recover without manual cleanup; drop or otherwise reconcile the staging table before recreating it.

Fixed in 438423f. migrateMySqlFamilyByRename now runs DROP TABLE IF EXISTS on both the archive and _v04_pending staging names before CREATE TABLE. A failure after staging creation but before RENAME TABLE is therefore recoverable on the next migration attempt without manual cleanup.

Fold explicit MySQL-family schema names to lowercase when
@@lower_case_table_names is 1 or 2, matching the existing physical-table
case folding so dataset bindings such as Analytics and analytics cannot
bypass the exclusive-owner check.

Also drop a stale _v04_pending staging table before rebuilding the
MySQL-family audit migration. A failure after staging CREATE but before
the RENAME TABLE swap can otherwise make every retry fail with a
pre-existing staging-table error.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 645a7

The PR changes in-place transformation and audit behavior across multiple database engines, but unresolved issues can leave archive tables after interrupted renames, expose unstable constraint names, and allow invalid compiled plans; MariaDB coverage is also skipped because required CI configuration is missing. These create substantial merge-readiness risk and should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

P1 Badge Use unique constraint names for the MySQL staging table

When upgrading an existing MySQL/MariaDB transformation_apply table, this staging CREATE TABLE reuses names such as fk_transformation_apply_dataset and chk_transformation_apply_contract while those constraints still belong to the original table. MySQL-family servers require explicitly named foreign-key constraints—and relevant releases also require CHECK names—to be unique within the schema, so the rebuild fails before copying any rows and v0.1 audit tables cannot migrate; generate staging-specific constraint names before the atomic rename.

Fixed in cf3f89d. createTableSql now accepts a constraint suffix, and the MySQL-family staging table is created with -suffixed foreign-key and CHECK constraint names. The live table's names remain unchanged; the staging CREATE can now coexist with the old table before the atomic RENAME TABLE swap.

P1 Badge Fold every SQLite schema alias before ownership checks

For SQLite datasets bound to an attached database, aliases are case-insensitive identifiers, but this branch normalizes only null/main; explicit aliases such as Aux and aux remain distinct. Two dataset rows using those spellings for the same attached table therefore each pass the exclusive-owner check, allowing a transformation to mutate a physical table owned by another logical dataset; lowercase every SQLite schema alias before comparison.

Fixed in cf3f89d. canonicalPhysicalSchema now lowercases explicit SQLite attached-schema aliases, while preserving the main/null canonical form. Aux and aux therefore resolve to the same ownership namespace before the exclusive-table check.

MySQL/MariaDB require named foreign-key and CHECK constraints on the
staging table to have names distinct from constraints on the live
transformation_apply table. createTableSql now accepts a constraint
suffix and the v04 pending table uses _v04_pending names before the
atomic rename.

SQLite attached database aliases are case-insensitive too;
canonicalPhysicalSchema now lowercases explicit attached schema names
so Aux and aux cannot bypass exclusive physical-table ownership.

The MySQL job now exports OPENSTATSPEC_MYSQL_ADMIN_USER and OPENSTATSPEC_MYSQL_ADMIN_PASSWORD. The MariaDB job (lines 148-152) exports no admin variables. Drop the pre-v0.4 archive table on the short-circuit path too.

If a process fails after RENAME TABLE but before DROP TABLE ... _pre_v04_archive, the next migrate() call sees a current schema and takes the mySqlAcceptsVersion02() branch at Line 111. That branch never removes the archive table. CatalogOwnership::assertExclusiveNamespace() then reports the leftover table as an unowned catalogue object and blocks ordinary use.

Remove the archive table unconditionally on the MySQL-family path.

Add explicit parentheses to the ownership filter condition.

The condition relies on && binding tighter than ||. It currently means: include the row when the schema is non-null and not a string, or when the canonical schemas match. That is fail-closed, because a malformed schema value increases the owner count and triggers the invalid_catalog failure. The intent is not visible in the current form, and a later edit can invert it silently. Make the grouping explicit.

Consider distinguishing the ambiguous-match case from the unknown-variable case.

resolve() emits one code and one message for two different conditions. When no variable matches, the code unknown_variable is right but the message "does not resolve uniquely in the current schema" is misleading. When more than one variable matches, find() delegates to resolve() with the default code unknown_variable, which does not describe an ambiguity. Separate messages, and a distinct code for the ambiguous case, would make the diagnostics actionable.

P2 Badge Recover audit artifacts before validating the namespace

When a MySQL/MariaDB rebuild is interrupted after creating transformation_apply_v04_pending or after the rename leaves transformation_apply_pre_v04_archive, the next public migrateCatalog() call invokes CatalogOwnership::ensure() before reaching this migrator; that check classifies either artifact as an unrelated table and aborts, making the cleanup in migrateMySqlFamilyByRename() unreachable and requiring manual database repair. The fresh evidence beyond the earlier staging-table fix is this public call ordering and namespace validation. Remove recognized migration artifacts before ensure(), or explicitly permit and reconcile them during migration recovery.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

A successful RENAME TABLE swap leaves the staging tables constraint
names on the new live table. Reusing the fixed _v04_pending suffix on a
later legacy migration therefore collides with the live foreign-key
constraint before any rows can be copied. Generate a short random suffix
for each staging rebuild; the live table keeps its existing names, while
each temporary table has schema-unique foreign-key and CHECK names.
The second Dolt session previously called DOLT_COMMIT without changing
its working set, so Dolt correctly returned nothing to commit and the
CI context-change case failed before exercising the guard. Update the
fixture dataset_name from the independent session before calling
DOLT_COMMIT; the snapshot deliberately excludes dataset_name, so the
metadata probe moves HEAD without changing the rollback assertions or
target rows.
The real concurrent Dolt session connected on its default main branch,
while the fixture and dataset tables lived on the expected feature/recode
branch. The metadata probe therefore failed with table not found before
DOLT_COMMIT could move HEAD. Checkout the same expected branch in the
second session before updating dataset_name and committing.

Preserve canonical constraint names after the MySQL/MariaDB table swap. createTableSql() applies a random _v04_<hex> suffix to every foreign-key and CHECK constraint, and RENAME TABLE leaves those names on transformation_apply. Rename the constraints to their canonical names before completing the migration, or update all name-based consumers and assert the final names.

In `@src/Transformation/Audit/TransformationAuditMigrator.php` at line 150, The
migration flow using createTableSql and the subsequent MySQL/MariaDB table swap
must leave foreign-key and CHECK constraints on transformation_apply with their
canonical names. Rename the suffixed constraints to canonical names before
completing the migration, and ensure name-based consumers continue to resolve
the final constraint names.

DOLT_CHECKOUT -b creates a branch and fails when the expected fixture
branch already exists. The concurrent session only needs to switch to
the existing feature/recode branch, so call DOLT_CHECKOUT with the branch
name directly before the metadata probe and real DOLT_COMMIT.
The real second-session DOLT_COMMIT correctly advances the branch HEAD
and adds a history entry that is intentionally not rolled back by the
executor transaction. Compare the post-failure snapshot excluding
repository evidence, assert data/metadata/audit state is restored, and
explicitly assert the branch is unchanged while the concurrent HEAD
advance remains visible.

- Around line 475-482: Update the checkout logic around DOLT_CHECKOUT to
validate both the procedure result and the session state: inspect the returned
status after PDOStatement::execute(), and verify active_branch() equals $branch
before returning the session. Ensure failures are surfaced instead of silently
continuing with an unconfirmed branch.

The concurrent-session test now stores the HEAD returned after its real
DOLT_COMMIT and asserts that it is exactly the final repository HEAD
and appears in dolt_log history. Keep the existing before/after HEAD
difference assertion so the test proves both mutation and identity of
the concurrent commit.
Use mb_strtolower for SPSS schema and RECODE target keys and require
ext-mbstring so accepted UTF-8 variable names resolve case-insensitively
without ASCII-only regressions. Add focused Unicode schema coverage.

Reject empty RecodeOperation rule lists at construction, expand parser
comparison permutation coverage, guard optional expected_error manifest
fields, and make integration cleanup resilient when a constraint or
isolated database teardown fails.

Refresh the Task 7 migration report and documentation imports to match
the implemented MySQL staging/rename path and public example.
