Description of changes

AC:

  • Make Codebloom attempt a refresh every 15m instead of every 1hr (the actual refresh time between tokens shoul still be atleast 4 hours, but atleast if we fail on a refresh, we will retry more oftenly)
  • If LASS fails even one request, its liveness probe should go offline so that the pod can be restarted. This is because a failed request is almost ENTIRELY because the applied IP is not ideal. restarting it will give it another chance to try again when Codebloom calls it again

Checklist before review

  • I have done a thorough self-review of the PR
  • Copilot has reviewed my latest changes, and all comments have been fixed and/or closed.
  • If I have made database changes, I have made sure I followed all the db repo rules listed in the wiki here. (check if no db changes)
  • All tests have passed
  • I have successfully deployed this PR to staging
  • I have done manual QA in both dev (and staging if possible) and attached screenshots below.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Authentication failures now mark the service as unavailable, and health checks report this state instead of indicating the service is healthy.
  • Improvements
    • Authentication refreshes now run every 15 minutes rather than hourly, while retaining an immediate initial run.

📝 Walkthrough

Authentication failures now mark the service unalive, and the HTTP liveness endpoint reports that state. The scheduled LeetCode authentication check now runs every 15 minutes.

Changes: Authentication service liveness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Liveness state and failure callback
internal/leetcode-auth-stealer-service/src/httpserve/router.py, internal/leetcode-auth-stealer-service/src/grpcserve/service/auth.py
AppState adds a live flag and mark_unalive(). AuthService accepts a callback and invokes it for handled authentication failures, cancellation, unexpected exceptions, and incomplete authentication. Invalid login/password input still records failure without invoking the callback.
Service wiring and health response
internal/leetcode-auth-stealer-service/src/server.py, internal/leetcode-auth-stealer-service/src/httpserve/health.py
serve passes AppState.mark_unalive to AuthService. The _livez endpoint returns 200 with "OK" when live, and 503 with "mr stark i dont feel so good" otherwise.

Authentication refresh schedule

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scheduled authentication check
src/main/java/org/patinanetwork/codebloom/scheduled/auth/LeetcodeAuthStealer.java
The schedule changes from hourly to every 15 minutes. Its initial delay remains zero.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fd2ce

Malformed authentication requests can prevent the intended restart-based recovery behavior; address this narrow liveness gap before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to fd2ce

A request-level authentication failure can now leave the entire authentication-service instance unhealthy. Callers able to reach that service gain a potential availability-control path. The intended restart-based recovery depends on deployment configuration that was not available for verification.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Request-scoped failures now control instance-wide liveness. Handled bad credentials, timeouts and cancellation mark the shared instance permanently unlive, without an in-process recovery transition after subsequent success. A caller with access to the internal RPC can therefore potentially induce persistent unhealthy status and, where restart-enforcing probes are configured, repeated restarts. Previously these failures did not affect liveness. Deployment isolation and restart controls are unknown, so this is not a verified public denial-of-service path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected mutable state belongs to one LASS process, not one request or account. A reachable caller needs no demonstrated administrative privilege to exercise authentication failure handling. Wider impact on Codebloom credential refresh depends on service routing, available replicas and cached credentials; no tenant-wide, environment-wide or Internet exposure is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The new potential availability path is RPC access, followed by an authentication attempt that produces a handled credential failure or cancellation, followed by shared live=false and HTTP 503. Restart amplification is conditional on external probe wiring. Before this PR, the same handled failures recorded errors without changing the always-successful liveness response.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Codebloom's scheduled entrypoint uses configured credentials rather than caller-supplied arguments. Its recent-database-token check and Redis fallback remain intact. LASS rejects empty credentials before the liveness-changing path and serializes RPC admission, but neither control authorizes a caller to affect shared health.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Repeated failure callbacks are idempotent assignments to false, but successful authentication has no compensating transition. The direct Java client converts RPC exceptions to an empty result, and the refresh consumer then leaves existing credentials unchanged. This contains credential mutation on failure but does not recover LASS liveness.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate request or account rejection from evidence that the process requires replacement. In particular, consider keeping bad credentials and caller cancellation out of an irreversible global-liveness transition, or requiring a bounded service-health policy before triggering replacement.
  • proposed — Validate the lifecycle contract against actual network restrictions, liveness probes, restart limits and routing behavior, including repeated failures and successful requests after failure. Restrict RPC access to intended callers so request reachability does not unnecessarily grant lifecycle influence.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "DINO-1139: add LASS resiliency" names the main change: LASS gains resiliency through a failure-triggered liveness state and a more frequent refresh attempt. It is concise and specific. It does not name the 15-minute refresh change, but it covers the primary intent. The ticket ID adds no description, but it does not make the title misleading.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description fills in the 'Description of changes' section with two acceptance criteria: a 15-minute refresh attempt interval and a liveness probe that goes offline after a failed LASS request. The checklist, screenshots, and staging sections are unchecked or empty, and the template's auto-sync comment block is retained. The description does not explain how the changes were tested, and the QA and screenshot sections are not completed. Those are expected to be completed before review, so the description is mostly complete.

internal/leetcode-auth-stealer-service/src/grpcserve/service/auth.py:52-58
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Mark invalid arguments as a failed request.

This branch records the failure and aborts with INVALID_ARGUMENT, but it bypasses _fail, so on_failure is not called. The shared AppState remains live and /livez continues to return 200. Route this branch through _fail before aborting.

Suggested fix
- record_auth_failure("invalid_argument")
