wally update can exit successfully on macOS and Linux even when downloading the installer fails. The curl | sh pipeline reports the shell's exit code, so an empty download can look like a successful update. A partial download can also run before curl reports the error.
This change downloads the whole script first and only runs it if curl succeeds. The background update check uses the same approach, so a failed download cannot replace the cached version.
I added 20 end-to-end checks for the built CLI using a local server. They cover failed and partial downloads, installer failures, and background checks without changing an existing installation.
Formatting, Python syntax and consistency checks pass locally, and the shell checks reproduce the original problem and confirm the changed commands behave as expected. macOS and Linux CI are still running, so this stays in draft until the native checks finish.
Summary by cubic
Fixes Unix wally update so a failed installer download exits with failure instead of executing an incomplete response, and now falls back to a usable temporary directory when TMPDIR is missing or not a directory, so background version-refresh checks still complete.
Downloads the full installer to a private temp file and runs it only after curl finishes (foreground and background refresh).
Locks temp files with traps so failed or interrupted downloads never leak or execute.
Falls back to /tmp when TMPDIR is unusable and passes that directory to the installer, preserving cached version checks.
Adds 20 end-to-end checks covering download, partial-response, installer, background-refresh, and unusable-TMPDIR cases; macOS and Linux CI now run them.
Written for commit 4e02b9d. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Unix updates now download the complete installer before running it, apply configured timeouts to downloads, and remove temporary installer files after use.
Background update checks now replace cached results only when the check succeeds and returns nonempty output.
Tests
Added automated macOS and Linux coverage for update commands, download and installer failures, background refresh and cache behavior, and temporary-directory fallback.
On non-Windows systems, updater commands download installer scripts to temporary files before running them. A new integration test checks foreground and background update behavior. macOS and Linux CI run the test against the built executable.
Changes: Unix updater download flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Download before installer execution src/commands/cmd_update.rs
Foreground updates download the installer to a temporary file before running it. Background checks use the same download-first flow and update the cache only when the check succeeds with nonempty output. Temporary files are removed on exit.
The integration test checks foreground and background update outcomes, including download failures, installer failures, cache behavior, temporary-directory fallback, and temporary-file cleanup. macOS and Linux CI run the test against the built executable.
The download-first updater has no established merge-blocking defect. Checking fallback temporary-file cleanup would improve regression coverage but need not block merging after normal checks pass.

Explanation
The title "fix: report Unix update download failures" matches the main change. The PR changes wally update on macOS and Linux so the full installer downloads before it runs, and a failed download is reported instead of reported as success. The background cache refresh uses the same flow. The title is short, specific, and follows a conventional commit prefix. It does not mention the new test harness, but that is a supporting detail and not the primary change.

Assert the request target the test server receives.
The handler parses only the mode value and never checks the request path or the rest of the query. A change that drops /installer%20script.sh or truncates the URL after mode still gets the fixture script, so every check still passes. The override URL reaches the installer through "$1" in DOWNLOAD_INSTALLER, and this argument path has no assertion. The current code forwards the URL unchanged, so this is a coverage gap, not a current failure.

Review comment at @scripts/test/test-update-download.py at line 39:
Extend the request checks around InstallerHandler.do_GET to retain the full
request target, then assert in the foreground and background test flows that
successful requests include the expected encoded path and complete query string.
Skip this assertion for connection-failure cases.
Cover fresh-cache suppression in the background test.
Cover fresh-cache suppression in the background test.
Every background() case starts with a stale cache and runs --help once. Its only throttle assertion, cache.stat().st_mtime > old, also passes when a build refreshes on every invocation, so that regression is not detected.
Add a fresh-cache run:
Write the cache with a current mtime, then run --help once.
Wait up to 5 seconds on server.requested, and assert that it is not set.
Assert that fixture.downloads stays empty and that the cache content and mtime are unchanged.
Kill the process if communicate() times out, as background() does.
In finally, call server.release.set(). Wait until the downloads directory and update-check.* files are cleared before the check returns, so the temporary directory is not removed while a refresh is still running.
Update the hardcoded all 20 update download checks passed message to the new check count.

Extend the background() test coverage with a fresh-cache case: set the cache
mtime to current, run --help once, and verify within five seconds that
server.requested remains unset, fixture.downloads stays empty, and cache content
and mtime are unchanged. Match the existing timeout cleanup by killing the
process if communicate() times out; in finally, release the server and wait for
downloads and update-check.* files to clear before returning. Update the
hardcoded success message to reflect the revised check count.
The two fallback cases (missing and not-directory) create /tmp/wally-update.* installer files when TMPDIR cannot be used. assert_clean checks only downloads and state, so a change that stops removing those files would not fail either case. Current production code removes them, so this is coverage for working behavior, not an existing leak.
Check the foreground case after the process exits. For the background case, the test can return before the shell runs its exit trap. Record the wally-update.* entries in /tmp before each run. After the background wait, poll with a timeout until entries created by that run are gone. Then assert that none remain. Entries that existed before the run are not counted, so host files do not cause failures.

Extend the fallback-case cleanup assertions in the test flow around assert_clean
to track wally-update.* entries in /tmp before each run and verify that entries
created by that run are removed. Check the foreground case after process exit;
for the background case, poll with a timeout after waiting for the process
before asserting cleanup, while excluding entries present before the run.

When TMPDIR is unusable, the installer file is created in /tmp. Fixture.assert_clean checks only self.downloads and self.state, so a leftover /tmp/wally-update.* file does not fail the fallback cases. Add a leftover check for /tmp that does not depend on other concurrent runs.

Update Fixture.assert_clean to check for a leftover installer file in /tmp
during fallback cases, while identifying only files created by this test rather
than treating files from concurrent runs as failures. Preserve the existing
checks for self.downloads and self.state.

Reviewed the download-first flow and re-ran the wrapper scripts locally: good download runs the installer with args, missing file and installer exit codes propagate, bad TMPDIR falls back to /tmp, background check leaves the cache alone on failed/empty downloads and updates it on success, no temp files left behind. CI green on all 5 platforms. LGTM.
