v0.20.0

[0.20.0] - 2026-09-26

This release is focused on [Linux perf][perf-wiki] and adds it as a first-class tool alongside the Valgrind tools. Existing Valgrind benchmarks work the same as before. Here the most important breaking changes in short. See the sections below for all changes and additions:

  • Renamed gungraun::ValgrindTool -> gungraun::Tool
  • Renamed the gungraun features client_request_defs -> stubs and client_requests -> act

This release also bumps the gungraun summary schema version from v6 to v7. Parsing the new format is simplest with the gungraun-summary crate if the parser is written in Rust. For non-Rust parsers like jq, the schema has been refactored and simplified.

Added

  • (#656): New features perf (default), perf_stubs (at least one of them is required)
  • (#656): New --perf-args, --perf-bin, --perf-events, --perf-limits, --perf-record, --perf-record-args, --perf-run-mode, --perf-sampling, command-line arguments to control perf
  • (#656): Added new variants ExitWith::Signal(i32), ExitWith::Signals(Vec<i32>)
  • (#710): Added test mode to run each benchmark once without Valgrind or perf. This supports cargo test --benches and cargo test --all-targets on platforms without these tools. Thanks to @nickbabcock
  • (#746): gungraun-summary: Added a v7 module and version-aware parsing helpers for version 7 summaries. The version 6 model is frozen as released with gungraun-summary 6.0.0 (see the gungraun-summary CHANGELOG)
  • (#767): Added timings and a start date to the json summary (and schema) for internal and consumer use:
    • New required started_at field (RFC 3339 UTC timestamp) in the top-level summary and in every profile
    • New required profile fields duration_ns (wall time of the whole tool run) and process_ns (time of the process phase including command assembly and calibration)
    • New optional profile fields setup_ns, delay_ns and teardown_ns, which are omitted when the corresponding phase never runs
    • Profiles from --load-baseline runs record the timings of the current load/compare operation instead of the original benchmark run
  • (#771): Added perf section to the Gungraun online guide

Changed

  • (#656): Breaking: Renamed gungraun::ValgrindTool -> gungraun::Tool
  • (#656): Renamed GUNGRAUN_VR_DEST_DIR, GUNGRAUN_VR_HOME, and GUNGRAUN_VR_WORKSPACE_ROOT to GUNGRAUN_TR_DEST_DIR, GUNGRAUN_TR_HOME, and GUNGRAUN_TR_WORKSPACE_ROOT environment variables
  • (#656): Breaking: feature rename of client_request_defs -> stubs and client_requests -> act, act now includes perf and stubs includes perf_stubs
  • (#656): Replaced specific valgrind-runner arguments with tool-runner arguments and updated the docs accordingly. Renamed --valgrind-runner, --valgrind-runner-args, --valgrind-runner-dest, --valgrind-runner-root to --tool-runner, --tool-runner-args, --tool-runner-dest, --tool-runner-root
  • (#656): ExitWith::Failure now accepts also death by signals in addition to the already existing exit code > 0. ExitWith is not Copy anymore
  • (#656): Improved multi-line split logic in terminal output
  • (#656): Print empty line between metrics and possible regressions
  • (#656): Extract valgrind support table from valgrind-requests build script into new gungraun-common crate.
  • (#656): The default tool can be disabled and only enabled tool configurations are validated
  • (#656): Allow empty metrics and print an Empty data message instead
  • (#723): Bump MSRV to 1.88.0
  • (#723): deps: Exchange minijinja with tera
  • (#723): gungraun-runner: Removed schemas link to gungraun-summary schemas directory
  • (#764): Errors are printed with more context
  • (#746): Breaking: Rework of the json summary (and schema) from version 6 to 7 with the goal of a consumer-oriented format:
    • Metric values are plain numbers instead of {"Int": ...} / {"Float": ...} wrappers and old/new comparisons are {"new": ..., "old": ...} objects instead of Left/Right/Both
    • Metric maps are flat without the tool-variant wrapper key (metrics_summary.Callgrind.Ir -> metrics.Ir) and "None" becomes an empty map
    • Renamed details -> description, summaries -> data, metrics_summary -> metrics, the total's summary -> metrics, diffs -> change, metrics -> values and ProfileInfo -> ToolRun with its details -> output
    • New top-level group and output_dir fields; removed summary_output and the per-profile flamegraphs, log_paths, out_paths lists and the tool run path in favor of output_dir; paths are now relative to the project root where possible
    • Optional fields are omitted instead of serialized as null (except the baselines tuple)
    • Added optional display and unit fields to ToolRegression (Soft and Hard variants)
