Add an experimental in-browser Rust Lab at /labs/rust - #72
Adds an experimental Rust Lab at /labs/rust/, a separate page that compiles and runs single-file Rust in desktop browsers, as Leon asked. The lab is labeled Experimental and opened from Settings → Labs → Rust (experimental). Rust is not added as a project kind: it stays out of languageRegistry.ts, Rails KINDS/LANGUAGES, and cloud sync until it meets the graduation criteria. Learner code never leaves the browser.
Feasibility gate (done first)
I proved the approach in a throwaway local harness on a COOP+COEP page in desktop Chrome before building any UI:
rustc 1.83.0-dev for WebAssembly (with lld) plus the wasm32-wasip1 standard library, from oligamiq/rust_wasmv0.2.0-release (the toolchain behind rubrc), running under @oligami/browser_wasi_shim-threads.
A program using println!, String, Vec, a struct, an enum with match, and Result with ? compiled and ran with correct stdout and stderr.
A deliberate borrow error returned rustc's own diagnostics (error[E0382], error[E0502]). --error-format=json gives structured codes and spans.
rubrc v1's GitHub Pages URLs now return 404. The release files are still on GitHub Releases (no CORS) and a Cloudflare mirror (CORS); both are byte-identical to the pinned SHA-256s.
Design
Compiler: rustc with lld linked in, so the LLVM bundle (another 18.5 MB) is not needed. Edition 2021, std only; each compile gets a fresh WASI threads instance.
Hosting: self-hosted on our origin and not committed to git. The build downloads the two pinned files once (web/scripts/rustToolchain.mjs), rejects any SHA-256 mismatch, and publishes 10 content-addressed 4 MiB chunks under /assets/rust-toolchain/. Netlify serves files over about 5 MB from origin rather than the edge. The committed manifest pins every chunk hash. The browser verifies each chunk again and keeps it in Cache Storage, with a "Remove download" option.
Headers: COEP require-corp and a strict lab CSP apply only to /labs/rust/* and the six rustLab*.worker-*.js files. The workspace's headers are unchanged; COEP site-wide would break Clerk and CheerpJ. COOP still comes from /*. Production shows Netlify serves one value per header name (as for /javaRunner.bootstrap.js), so the lab CSP replaces the workspace CSP on the lab page. verify-production-build.mjs checks all of this and the chunk hashes.
Workspace untouched: the lab builds separately (vite.lab.config.ts) into the same dist/. The workspace entry chunk stayed byte-identical (index-CbgiXUDY.js) before the Settings link was added. The service worker ignores /labs/ and the toolchain, so the lab can't overwrite the cached workspace page.
UX: desktop gate (phones, tablets, and windows under 900px get an explanation with "Back to Hafa Code"; unsupported browsers get a hard stop). Nothing downloads before an opt-in that shows the measured size. The page has Monaco with Rust highlighting, Run/Stop, Ctrl/Cmd+Enter, stdin, a 10 s run limit, 256 KB of output, rustc output with error codes, an error list that jumps to the line, and editor markers. Coaching covers E0382, E0499, E0502, E0308, E0384, and common panics. There are five guide topics, five challenges with output checks, and local projects with import/export (.hafa-rust.json or .rs).
Measurements
Measured on an Apple M1 Max with Chrome 156 against a local production build with _headers applied:
about 0.7 GB loaded, 1.2–1.5 GB while compiling, steady over 6 compiles
Deploy impact: each build downloads 38.7 MB into node_modules/.cache (CI cold runs download again), and each deploy has 38.7 MB more files. Netlify uploads only files whose content changed. If the download fails, the build fails rather than shipping a broken lab.
Docs
New docs/RUST_LAB.md covers what works, limits, licensing, why the lab is experimental, and graduation criteria. README, ARCHITECTURE, SECURITY, FRONTEND_STRUCTURE, PRODUCT_ROADMAP, and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES are updated.
Licensing note: rustc, std, LLVM, wasi-libc, and the JS shims are permissive (MIT/Apache-2.0/LLVM exception). The oligamiq/rust_wasm build repository itself declares no license. We redistribute its unmodified builds of those projects with attribution. Confirming this with the maintainer, or building the toolchain ourselves, is a graduation requirement.
Testing (head 2ddf1df, rebased on main after the Go PR)
CI: green on 2ddf1df. That covers frontend, backend, classroom-e2e (including the real-compiler @rust-toolchain tests), the Netlify deploy preview, and Header rules.
Local ./scripts/gate.sh: passed end to end on 29e242e. On the final head, every stage passes: lint, 548 unit tests, the Go content check, the build and verifier, Rails (61 runs), RuboCop, Brakeman, bundler-audit, and npm audit. In each local Playwright run, one different existing language test failed intermittently (SQL, Python, Go). Each passed when rerun alone, and CI passes. The Rust Lab tests passed in every run.
New Playwright e2e/rust-lab.spec.ts:
COEP on the lab only, with crossOriginIsolated true on the lab and false on /.
Nothing downloads before opt-in, the size is shown, and an axe scan passes.
An edit over 200 KB is refused and real Monaco is restored.
Phone (390×844) and tablet (768×1024) gating, with no download.
Tagged @rust-toolchain: a real download, compile, and run. It covers E0382, E0502, and E0384 coaching, typing then Ctrl/Cmd+Enter, stdin, a panic, output kept after Stop, a challenge failing then passing, reload persistence, and every guide example and challenge solution. Set E2E_SKIP_RUST_TOOLCHAIN=1 to skip it offline.
Lab unit and component tests: 51 tests, using real rustc JSON fixtures.
Real-browser QA in desktop Chrome on a production build served with dist/_headers:
Full keyboard flow: consent, run, coaching, jump-to-line, Stop, the 10 s timeout, export, reload, and import.
Also checked: tab arrow keys, Escape then Tab, 1280×720, 1920×1080 dark, and phone/tablet gating with 44 px targets.
Main workspace: Java ran and the web preview rendered.
Deploy preview (real network from Guam):
Headers as designed. The lab CSP replaces the workspace CSP there, and COOP is sent once.
Cold first run took 11.9–33.5 s (download dominates); warm compile took 0.4 s.
Output printed before Stop is kept.
The workspace's Java and preview still work.
impeccable detect: no findings.
Accessibility fix outside the lab: a hovered project card's date was 4.02:1 contrast. The new Settings section moved the pointer onto a card in CI's mobile accessibility test, which exposed it. It now uses --text-muted on hover, with a regression test.
Review
CodeRabbit ran two full rounds. 11 findings were fixed with tests. One suggestion (a build opt-out for the lab) was answered and withdrawn by CodeRabbit. It verified each fix in its thread.
The final fix (2ddf1df, restoring Monaco after a refused edit) has not had an incremental CodeRabbit pass, because the free plan allows one review per hour. The PR still shows the first round's CHANGES_REQUESTED. It needs one more @coderabbitai review after the hourly window.
Deploy-preview checks for the reviewer
/labs/rust/ should send COEP require-corp and crossOriginIsolated should be true.
/ should be unchanged.
The compiler should download from /assets/rust-toolchain/*.bin and run.
The workspace's Java and preview should still work.
Not merged by this PR's author; the lead owns merge and deploy verification.
Adds an experimental Rust Lab at /labs/rust/, linked from Settings → Labs. It supports browser-based Rust editing, compilation, execution, stdin, diagnostics and error coaching, guides, five challenges, and local project import/export.
Keeps the lab separate from the project language registry, Rails models, and cloud sync. Projects remain in browser storage.
Builds the lab as a separate page with scoped COEP and CSP headers. Dedicated workers handle toolchain download, compilation, and program execution. The self-hosted Rust/WASI toolchain is pinned, downloaded after user consent, verified by SHA-256, and cached.
Limits source, stdin, compile time, run time, output, and WebAssembly memory. The lab gates unsupported environments and warns about small screens or low memory; users can continue past the environment gate.
Adds docs/RUST_LAB.md with supported features, limitations, measurements, security and licensing details, and graduation criteria. Confirming the toolchain build repository’s licensing or independently building the toolchain remains a graduation requirement. The lab remains experimental.
Adds unit, component, and Playwright coverage for lab behavior, storage, diagnostics, toolchain handling, accessibility, and real-toolchain execution. The PR description reports green CI and passing Rust Lab tests, including real-toolchain browser tests. It also reports production-build browser QA and deploy-preview checks. Some existing SQL, Python, and Go browser tests failed intermittently in local runs but passed on retry; CI passed.
A separate, cross-origin-isolated page that compiles single-file Rust
(edition 2021, std only) with rustc 1.83 for wasm32-wasip1 inside the
browser and runs the program in its own worker.
- Pinned toolchain from oligamiq/rust_wasm v0.2.0: rustc with lld and the
wasm32-wasip1 standard library (38.7 MB brotli). The build downloads it
once, checks SHA-256, and publishes 4 MiB content-addressed chunks; the
lab verifies every chunk again and keeps them in Cache Storage.
- COEP and a strict CSP apply to /labs/rust/ and the lab workers only; the
workspace's headers and build output are unchanged (separate lab build).
- Opt-in download with the size shown, desktop gate, Run/Stop, stdin,
rustc diagnostics with error codes, error coaching (E0382, E0499, E0502,
E0308, E0384, panics), five guide topics, five challenges, and local
projects with import/export.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Settings gains a small Labs section that links to /labs/rust/; the Learn
workspace and its mobile navigation are unchanged.
- Playwright: COEP only on the lab, opt-in before any toolchain request,
phone/tablet gating, and (tagged @rust-toolchain) a real compile/run of
the starter, E0382/E0502 coaching, stdin, panics, Stop, challenge pass,
reload persistence, and every guide example and challenge solution.
- Pre-bundle the lab's worker dependencies so the dev server does not
reload the page during its first run.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add docs/RUST_LAB.md (what works, architecture, hosting and pinning,
measured sizes and timings, browsers, security, licensing, why it is
experimental, and graduation criteria) and update the README,
architecture, security, frontend structure, roadmap, and third-party
notices.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Ctrl/Cmd+Enter in the editor compiles the editor's current text; it
could compile the previous text when pressed right after typing. A
ref guards against two runs starting in the same tick.
- Escape then Tab leaves the lab editor, as in the workspace, with the
same visible hint.
- Apply the theme before the first paint (no light flash in dark mode).
- rustc's line-0 spans no longer show as "line 0".
- Production shows Netlify serves one value per header name, so the lab
CSP replaces the workspace CSP on /labs/rust/; correct the comments and
docs that said values are joined.

- Toolchain download: verify each source's SHA-256 before using it, fall
back to the next source on a mismatch, and time out stalled requests.
- Editor: show existing rustc markers when the lazy editor mounts, and
keep the lab usable with a Reload action if the editor fails to load.
- Projects: keep state updaters pure, refuse edits that would exceed the
200 KB limit (they would be dropped on reload), size-check imports on
decoded content, and survive browsers that throw on localStorage access.
- Program output keeps stdout and stderr in write order.
- Correct the footer's license attribution.

- The program worker writes output to shared memory that the page reads
every 50 ms and once more when the run ends, so output printed before

and an e2e that prints, loops forever, and stops.
- Program input is limited to 20 KB of UTF-8 like the stored project, so
non-ASCII input is no longer dropped on reload.

The generic button hover gives a project card the sunken surface, where
its faint date text is 4.02:1. The Labs section in Settings moves the
mobile Color-safe button, so CI's accessibility check ended with the
pointer resting on a card and caught it. Use the muted text color on
hover, as the active card already does, and cover it with an axe check
of a hovered card in both themes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CI note for 895ce29: classroom-e2e had failed on a4015fa and 6cc8230 in accessibility.spec.ts (contrast 4.02:1 on a project card's date). The cause was a pre-existing hover-state bug. A hovered project card gets the sunken surface while its date keeps --text-faint. The new Settings → Labs section moves the mobile Color-safe button, so the test's pointer ended up resting on a card. Fixed by using --text-muted on hover, as the active card already does, plus a new axe test of a hovered card in light and dark. It fails without the fix and passes with it. The intermittent SQL languages.spec failure passed on retry, as it did locally.

A controlled value that did not change is not pushed back into Monaco,
so a refused edit stayed visible and Ctrl/Cmd+Enter could compile it.
The editor now restores the last accepted text when a change is refused.
Covered by a unit test and a real-Monaco e2e that appends 200 KB.

…d cap program memory
Independent review of the Rust Lab found:
- A refused oversized edit restored the text with model.setValue, which moved the
cursor to line 1, so the learner's next keystrokes landed at the top of the file.
The editor now puts the cursor (or replaced selection) back where the change was.
The e2e test now pastes for real and checks where typing continues.
- The "not saving" warning was only checked when the page opened. Storage is shared
with the workspace and can fill later, so every save now updates the warning.
- A runaway allocation grew a learner's program to WebAssembly's 4 GiB in about a
second, on top of the compiler's memory. Programs are now linked with a 512 MiB
maximum and end with Rust's allocation-failure message (covered with the real
compiler).
- Lab controls and the Settings Labs link get 44px targets on coarse pointers, as the
workspace's buttons do.

Settle a cancelled toolchain load without disposing a newer load.
When Stop cancels a load started through run(), RustToolchain.dispose() leaves the awaited load promise pending. The UI returns to idle, but runningRef.current stays true. Later Run actions therefore return silently until the page reloads.
Reject the active load from dispose(). Skip cleanup for the cancellation rejection, so a newer load created on the same RustToolchain instance is not terminated by the older load's catch handler.

Update RustToolchain.load and dispose so disposing the worker rejects its active

the load failure handler, recognize this cancellation and skip dispose() for it,
so an older load’s catch handler cannot terminate a newer load on the same
RustToolchain instance.

RustToolchain.dispose() terminated the toolchain worker but never settled the
load() promise, so a run that was downloading the compiler stayed "running"
after Stop or Cancel and every later Run press did nothing until a reload
(reproduced on the deploy preview; found by CodeRabbit). dispose() now rejects
the load in progress as stopped, and the lab skips its cleanup for that case so
an older load's rejection cannot end a newer load on the same instance.
Also give the challenge Hints summary the 44px coarse-pointer target.

Independent review and QA (Claude, in place of the automated review)
I reviewed the whole diff against main (54 files), tested it on a local production build served with the real _headers and on this deploy preview, and pushed two fix commits. Final head: 2aa18c5.

Material
After Stop or Cancel during the compiler download, RustToolchain.dispose() never settled the pending load(). The run stayed "in progress" and every later Run press did nothing until a reload. I reproduced it on the preview; CodeRabbit flagged it on 1de9cf5.
Fixed in 2aa18c5: dispose() now rejects the active load as stopped, and the lab skips its cleanup for that case so an older load can't end a newer one. Client unit tests plus an e2e step with the real compiler, both confirmed failing on the old code.
Material
A refused oversized edit (2ddf1df) restored the text but moved the cursor to line 1, so the next keystrokes landed at the top of the file.
Fixed in 1de9cf5: the cursor or replaced selection goes back to where the edit happened. The e2e now pastes for real and checks where typing continues; it fails on the old code.
Material
Learner programs had no memory cap. A runaway Vec reached 4080 MB in about a second, on top of the compiler's memory, which can crash the tab on a school laptop.
Fixed in 1de9cf5: programs are linked with --max-memory at 512 MiB and now stop at about 496 MB with Rust's "memory allocation … failed" message. Covered in the @rust-toolchain e2e. Docs updated.
Minor
The "not saving" warning was checked only when the page opened. Storage is shared with the workspace and can fill later.
Fixed in 1de9cf5: every save updates the warning. Unit test added.
Minor
On coarse pointers, lab controls, the Hints summary, and Settings → Labs were 40px. The workspace uses 44px there.
Fixed in 1de9cf5 and 2aa18c5. Verified 44px on a touch phone and tablet.
Residuals (not fixed)
npm run build must download the pinned toolchain from GitHub or the rubrc mirror. If both are down and the build cache is cold, deploys of the whole app fail, not just the lab. Consider mirroring the two pinned files somewhere we control, or adding a documented skip flag.
Imported project titles keep bidi-override characters such as U+202E. This is cosmetic and local only, and the workspace's own titles behave the same way.
An out-of-memory abort shows "The program panicked" without a coach card. Its message still explains it.
After Remove download, toolchainCacheState() reopens an empty hafa-rust-lab-toolchain-v1 cache. It holds no bytes.
On deploy previews, the lab's frame-src 'none' blocks Netlify's preview drawer. This doesn't apply in production.
The full local e2e suite failed one timing-sensitive test per run in two of three runs (Python slow download twice, SQL once). Each passes alone, and the final gate and CI were clean.
Evidence
./scripts/gate.sh on 2aa18c5 passed: 554 unit tests, 65/65 e2e (including both @rust-toolchain tests), 61 API runs, rubocop, brakeman, bundler-audit, and npm audit at high.
CI on 2aa18c5: backend, frontend, and classroom-e2e all passed; deploy preview ready.
Preview QA on 2aa18c5 (Chromium, 1280×720, plus 1920 and 2560 wide):
Lab, all passed: opt-in download and starter run (no requests before consent), E0382 coaching with an editor marker, stdin with non-ASCII input, panic coaching, Stop keeping prior output, 10 s timeout, 256 KB output limit, memory cap, refused paste, challenge fail then pass, reload persistence, Remove download, and export then import.
Hostile imports: malformed, wrong format, missing source, oversized, prototype keys, HTML or script in the title, and binary files were all rejected or sanitized. No XSS from program output or diagnostics.
Gating: 390×844 and 768×1024 touch screens, and an 800px-wide desktop, all show the desktop-only message with zero downloads.
Main app, all passed: Clerk sign-in opens, Java runs, Go runs, the web preview renders, and Settings → Labs opens an isolated lab from a page controlled by the service worker. Back in the workspace, the page is not isolated.
Headers on the preview: / sends COOP and the workspace CSP with no COEP. /labs/rust/ sends COOP, COEP require-corp, and the lab CSP. All six rustLab*.worker-* files send COEP and their own CSP. Toolchain chunks are immutable.
Merge readiness, in my view: ready. No material findings remain. CodeRabbit was rate-limited on the final head.
Addressed: every CodeRabbit finding from this review is fixed on the current head (the cancelled-load issue in 2aa18c5, settled in RustToolchain.dispose() and skipping cleanup for stopped loads), and all review threads are resolved. CodeRabbit was rate-limited on the final head, so per the owner's instruction an independent review + full QA replaced it: #72 (comment) . Gate and required CI pass on 2aa18c5.

Purpose
Adds an experimental Rust Lab at
/labs/rust/, a separate page that compiles and runs single-file Rust in desktop browsers, as Leon asked. The lab is labeled Experimental and opened from Settings → Labs → Rust (experimental). Rust is not added as a project kind: it stays out oflanguageRegistry.ts, RailsKINDS/LANGUAGES, and cloud sync until it meets the graduation criteria. Learner code never leaves the browser.Feasibility gate (done first)
I proved the approach in a throwaway local harness on a COOP+COEP page in desktop Chrome before building any UI:
wasm32-wasip1standard library, from oligamiq/rust_wasmv0.2.0-release(the toolchain behind rubrc), running under@oligami/browser_wasi_shim-threads.println!,String,Vec, a struct, an enum withmatch, andResultwith?compiled and ran with correct stdout and stderr.error[E0382],error[E0502]).--error-format=jsongives structured codes and spans.Design
web/scripts/rustToolchain.mjs), rejects any SHA-256 mismatch, and publishes 10 content-addressed 4 MiB chunks under/assets/rust-toolchain/. Netlify serves files over about 5 MB from origin rather than the edge. The committed manifest pins every chunk hash. The browser verifies each chunk again and keeps it in Cache Storage, with a "Remove download" option.require-corpand a strict lab CSP apply only to/labs/rust/*and the sixrustLab*.worker-*.jsfiles. The workspace's headers are unchanged; COEP site-wide would break Clerk and CheerpJ. COOP still comes from/*. Production shows Netlify serves one value per header name (as for/javaRunner.bootstrap.js), so the lab CSP replaces the workspace CSP on the lab page.verify-production-build.mjschecks all of this and the chunk hashes.vite.lab.config.ts) into the samedist/. The workspace entry chunk stayed byte-identical (index-CbgiXUDY.js) before the Settings link was added. The service worker ignores/labs/and the toolchain, so the lab can't overwrite the cached workspace page..hafa-rust.jsonor.rs).Measurements
Measured on an Apple M1 Max with Chrome 156 against a local production build with
_headersapplied:Deploy impact: each build downloads 38.7 MB into
node_modules/.cache(CI cold runs download again), and each deploy has 38.7 MB more files. Netlify uploads only files whose content changed. If the download fails, the build fails rather than shipping a broken lab.Docs
New
docs/RUST_LAB.mdcovers what works, limits, licensing, why the lab is experimental, and graduation criteria. README, ARCHITECTURE, SECURITY, FRONTEND_STRUCTURE, PRODUCT_ROADMAP, and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES are updated.Licensing note: rustc, std, LLVM, wasi-libc, and the JS shims are permissive (MIT/Apache-2.0/LLVM exception). The oligamiq/rust_wasm build repository itself declares no license. We redistribute its unmodified builds of those projects with attribution. Confirming this with the maintainer, or building the toolchain ourselves, is a graduation requirement.

CodeRabbit ran two full rounds. 11 findings were fixed with tests. One suggestion (a build opt-out for the lab) was answered and withdrawn by CodeRabbit. It verified each fix in its thread.
The final fix (
2ddf1df, restoring Monaco after a refused edit) has not had an incremental CodeRabbit pass, because the free plan allows one review per hour. The PR still shows the first round'sCHANGES_REQUESTED. It needs one more@coderabbitai reviewafter the hourly window.Deploy-preview checks for the reviewer
