Four abilities placed with their ranges off, then the same four turned on from the right-click menu

Four abilities get an optional range, off until someone turns it on from the right-click menu. Saved strategies look exactly as they did: the whole window is pixel-identical to main.

ci: analyze test web replay

Players plan around how far an ability reaches, and these gave them nothing to plan with. enbeee was grouping custom shapes on top of Chokehold to "model Chokehold's detection & stealth range at the same time", so they could hold a choke while the trap stayed hidden.

What changed

Numbers come from the Valorant 13.09 files (release-13.09, manifest C9CCDD84A27432E9), read with the extraction tool from #404. The files use centimetres.

Ability What the game says Menu item
Veto, Chokehold GameObject_Pine_Q_SeizeTrap: Stealth Reveal Range 900, passed to AddRevealRangeOverlapComponent. ActivationSphere 658 is the trigger, drawn already Stealth Range, a faint 9 m ring. The 6.58 m circle is untouched
Vyse, Arc Rose GameObject_Nox_StealthingTrap_Flash_2: Stealth Reveal Range 1000 Stealth Range, a 10 m outline with no fill, because it says who can see the trap and not how far the flash reaches
Raze, Showstopper Projectile_Clay_X_Rocket: ExplosionRadius 700, inner 450 Range, 7 m
Gekko, Thrash Pawn_Aggrobot_RollyPolly: Detain Radius 500, read by ComputeAffectedTargets. The 800 DisplaceVolume sphere only tracks displaced players Range, 5 m

Left out:

Ability What the game says Why
Raze, Paint Shells Projectile_Clay_4_Projectile_Primary 550, then NumberSubmunitions 4 bouncing out, each 525 It's five separate circles that land in different places. One circle would be wrong
Raze, Blast Pack DamageOuterRadius 500 Dara: doesn't need one
Skye, Trailblazer ConcussionRange 350 Dara: doesn't need one
Sova, Owl Drone EMP_Radius 350 on the pawn, and nothing else with an area The dart tags one player, so there's no area to draw. I did not trace whether anything still reads EMP_Radius
Skye, Seekers No area radius in the pawn or AbilityTuning_Guide_X_Pack They go after players, so nothing is centred on the icon
Gekko, Dizzy SightRadius 4500 at 180 degrees, and a separate ApplicationRadius 3250 Two candidates, and what it hits depends on line of sight. It belongs with the flash line-of-sight item
Gekko, Wingman and Raze, Boom Bot Boom Bot ExplosionOuterRadius 600, DetonationDistance 250. Wingman PlayerExplodeSphere 600 Both already draw a cone, and they go off wherever they end up
Viper, Viper's Pit Patch_Pandemic_X_Circular has no radius, a floor-following volume builds it No single number exists
Fade, Prowler Nearsight Radius 700 It chases a target, so the number isn't a place on the map
Omen, Shrouded Step ShroudedStepRange 1500 Measured from the caster, not the placed spot
Harbor, High Tide Its own backlog item

How off by default works

Every saved item stores true for all its range flags, so a range that starts off can't use them. A new saved field would be a format change, and old cloud clients reject fields they don't know.

So these four read showInnerOutline the other way round: a stored false means the range is on. They have no inner range, so nothing else reads that flag for them. showOptionalRange in placed_classes.dart is the one place that says this. It's an unusual use of a flag, and it's what keeps the library format and the sync protocol unchanged. A build that doesn't know about the ranges ignores the flag.

RangedIconAbility extends BaseAbility and only overrides createWidget, so a plain icon's anchor, side flip, migrations and glyph rotation stay as they were. Chokehold keeps its old definition and gains optionalRangeSize. Replays need no special case, because the range starts off there too.

The rings are bigger than the boxes they're saved in, and AGENTS.md says a drawing that can't fit its old box needs a migration. I went without one. A centred circle spilling past its box changes no stored byte and no icon pixel, and an OverflowBox in a Clip.none stack draws it. If you read that rule more strictly, this PR is the place to say so.

How far I got

Driver builds of main and this branch, on Windows.

Check Result
Strategy saved by main, opened in main and this branch, whole window on attack and on defense 0 differing pixels
Each range turned on from the menu Draws at its size, centred on the icon
Saved with ranges on, reopened in this branch Ranges still on, same spots
Same strategy opened in main Plain icons in the same spots, no errors
Screenshot capture with ranges on Rings draw past their boxes, below
.ica export with ranges on showInnerOutline: false on those four, no new field
Dragged Showstopper by its icon, range on The range went with it
Dragged on Chokehold's stealth ring, away from the icon Chokehold stayed put
Side switch and back with ranges on Clean, driver reports nothing misplaced

tool/drive/scripts/ability-ranges.json runs the hands-on part. It needed one driver-only step, addAbility. test/ability_ranges_placement_test.dart renders each ability against its old definition at a saved position, on both sides and at two icon sizes.

Not covered

  • I never saw a range turned on during a drag mid-flight, a page transition mid-animation, or a video export.
  • Turning one on in a real replay isn't possible, the replay has no such menu. A strategy captured from a replay starts with these off, like any other.
  • I didn't run this on web in a browser. The web lane runs in CI.

The current changes appear safe to merge; no new actionable issue was established.

Summary

Adds ranges users can turn on for Showstopper, Thrash, and Arc Rose, plus a separate stealth ring for Chokehold. The current code keeps these new ranges off by default and preserves the boxes used by saved placements.

  • Raze, Gekko, and Vyse icons can show their measured ranges.
  • Chokehold can show its 9 m stealth ring beside its trigger circle.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional range rings for selected abilities, including Raze’s Showstopper, Gekko’s Thrash, Vyse’s Arc Rose, and Veto’s Chokehold.
    • Range rings can display outlines, fills, and labels, and can be enabled or hidden using ability visibility controls.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved range and icon placement so ability markers remain aligned across map scales, icon sizes, and attack or defense views.

Raze's Blast Pack, Paint Shells and Showstopper, Skye's Trailblazer, Gekko's
Thrash and Vyse's Arc Rose now draw their range from the Valorant 13.09 files.
Chokehold gets its 9 m stealth ring around the 6.58 m trigger circle.

A saved item stores the top-left of its box, so the boxes stay as they were
and the circles spill past them, centered. Nothing saved moves.

Walkthrough

The change adds ranged icon abilities and optional ranges for circle abilities. It updates four agents, adds visibility-menu controls, and adjusts range rendering. Tests check placement and range behavior. A drive script adds the abilities and exercises the range controls.

Explanation

The title "Add optional ranges for four abilities" matches a real part of the changeset. The raw summary shows optional range support added to Chokehold, plus RangedIconAbility entries for Showstopper, Thrash, and Arc Rose, which together cover four abilities. The PR objectives describe a broader change: range visuals added to ability icons, including Chokehold's 9 m stealth ring. The title names the main feature but omits the placement tests, the drive script, and the context-menu visibility controls. It is an accurate, specific summary of the primary change.

Blast Pack, Paint Shells and Trailblazer lose their ranges: Paint Shells is
several circles, not one, and the others weren't worth drawing. Showstopper,
Thrash, Arc Rose and Chokehold's stealth ring start off and turn on from the
right-click menu.

Every saved item stores true for its range flags, so a range that starts off
can't use them. These abilities read a stored false on the inner outline flag,
which they otherwise never use, and that leaves the file format alone. Chokehold
goes back to its old definition, so its saved toggles keep their meaning, and
replays need no special case.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Expose the optional range’s checked state to screen readers.

_buildToggleItem shows isEnabled only through an unlabeled icon. A screen reader cannot tell whether “Range” or “Stealth Range” is on. Add checked-state semantics to the menu item and assert that state in a widget test. Flutter provides Semantics.checked for this purpose. (api.flutter.dev)

Based on learnings, tests for new interactive Flutter controls should verify semantic labels, roles, and screen-reader announcements.
