  • Callers usually know when something happened, not which changeset id was current then, so pinning a projection required walking the changeset log by hand first.
  • Changeset ids are UUIDv7, so the instant can be resolved against the log itself without a second time index that could drift from it.
  • The response now returns the resolved changeset id, so a time-based read can be repeated exactly and compared with later reads.
  • Default chosen for review: precision is milliseconds and the boundary is inclusive, matching what a UUIDv7 id can encode; changesets minted in the same millisecond as the instant are included.
  • Default chosen for review: an instant in the future is refused rather than read as "now", because the answer would silently change as time passes.
  • Default chosen for review: an instant older than every changeset the caller can read is FAILED_PRECONDITION rather than an empty board, since history before the log is unknown, not empty.
  • Default chosen for review: only changesets the caller can read are candidates, so another tenant's activity neither resolves the instant nor reveals that it exists.
  • Default chosen for review: as-of reads remain baseline only and refuse a branch header, because branch history has no rewind path yet.
  • An older server would ignore as_of_time and return the current model, so a client sends the instant only after the server advertises the feature.

Note

Medium Risk
Adds a new resolution path over the baseline changeset log with tenant visibility and rewind-cap behavior, though it is read-only and gated by a feature flag with integration coverage.

Overview
GetEventModelProjection (and the MCP get_event_model_projection tool) can now take an optional as_of_time RFC 3339 instant instead of hunting for a changeset id. The server maps the instant to the newest baseline changeset the caller can read whose UUIDv7 id is at or before that millisecond, then reuses the existing as_of_changeset rewind path. The response adds as_of_changeset so time-based reads can be pinned and repeated by id.

Validation and compatibility match the documented rules: as_of_time and as_of_changeset are mutually exclusive; branch headers are rejected; future instants are INVALID_ARGUMENT; instants before any readable changeset are FAILED_PRECONDITION; unreadable tenants’ changesets are skipped as resolution candidates. Wire contract revision 23 introduces the as_of_time feature flag; clients and MCP only send the field after the server advertises it.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Adds a new historical read path that resolves time via log walks and visibility rules; mistakes could return wrong board state or leak existence, though behavior mirrors existing as-of changeset semantics.

Overview
GetEventModelProjection (and the MCP get_event_model_projection tool) can now take as_of_time, an RFC 3339 instant, as an alternative to as_of_changeset. The server walks the baseline changeset log and picks the newest readable changeset whose UUIDv7 id is minted at or before that instant (millisecond precision, inclusive boundary), then builds the same rewound view as an id-based as-of read.

The response adds as_of_changeset so time-based callers get the resolved id (empty on a current read). as_of_time and as_of_changeset are mutually exclusive; both remain baseline-only with no branch header. Future instants are INVALID_ARGUMENT; instants before any readable changeset are FAILED_PRECONDITION, with the same rewind cap as existing as-of reads.

Documentation in changesets.md and proto comments describe resolution rules, tenancy (unreadable changesets are skipped as candidates), and cost.

Walkthrough

Event-model projection requests can now select a readable baseline changeset by RFC 3339 instant. The server resolves the instant at millisecond precision and returns the selected changeset ID. The API advertises support through a feature flag, and the MCP tool checks that capability before sending the request.

The projection API adds the time selector and resolved changeset ID. The server feature flag and client capability mapping expose support. The MCP tool checks support before sending a request with as_of_time. The contract revision changes to 23. Documentation describes the behavior and compatibility.
Timestamp parsing and projection resolution
rsworkspace/crates/trogon-atlas-server/src/as_of.rs, rsworkspace/crates/trogon-atlas-server/src/service.rs
The server validates the timestamp, finds a readable baseline changeset at or before it, and uses that ID for the projection and response. Unit tests cover timestamp parsing and UUIDv7 time comparisons.
Projection integration coverage and behavior documentation

Integration tests cover timestamp-selected projections, reported changeset IDs, invalid selector combinations, and existing requests with an empty as_of_time value.

The time-based projection tool has an incomplete RPC policy and reference. Updating them is a bounded follow-up; the omission does not currently change required permissions.

An older server drops GetEventModelProjection.as_of_time and returns the current model. Clients that send the instant require the feature first.

The role map and the tool reference only check RPCs the policy lists. An as-of instant calls GetServerInfo first, and that call was missing from the list.

An instant one millisecond before the model is also before every readable changeset when both puts share a millisecond, and the server answers FAILED_PRECONDITION instead of the model's absence.
