  • Suppression annotations exist so every silenced finding carries a written reason, but a doc made only of spaces, tabs or newlines passed the emptiness check and silenced findings with no explanation at all.
  • The mixed-surface annotation never looked at its doc, so even an empty one suppressed UI_USED_AS_INPUT_AND_OUTPUT despite the contract asking for an explanation.
  • Default chosen for review: blank means empty after trimming Unicode whitespace, and stored annotation text is kept exactly as submitted.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Tightens model validation so existing boards with whitespace-only annotation docs may newly report errors; behavior change is limited to validation, not runtime auth or persistence.

Overview
Validation now treats annotation doc strings as missing when they are empty or only Unicode whitespace (trim), via shared helper is_stated_reason. Findings that were incorrectly silenced by " " / newline-only docs now fire again.

That rule applies to suppression/explanation annotations: DerivedFieldAnnotation, SharedConsumersAnnotation, PinnedRefAnnotation, OrphanAnnotation, and PersonalDataAnnotation. User-facing rule text for related codes (e.g. ORPHAN_DOC_EMPTY, PII_DOC_MISSING, stale-ref / mixed-surface / shared-consumers doc rules) is updated to match.

MixedSurfaceAnnotation previously suppressed UI_USED_AS_INPUT_AND_OUTPUT on presence alone; it now decodes the annotation and requires a non-blank doc, consistent with the other contracts.

Unit tests iterate BLANK_DOCS for whitespace cases; mixed_surface_tests and integration suppression_reasons.rs cover orphan suppression through put_entity / batch_mutate and validate_event_model.

Walkthrough

Annotation validation now treats empty and whitespace-only documentation as missing across several annotation checks. Tests cover blank documentation and nonblank reasons with surrounding spaces, including orphan validation after individual and batch writes.

Changes

Annotation Documentation Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nonblank documentation rule
rsworkspace/crates/trogon-atlas-server/src/validation.rs
A shared predicate and annotation checks require documentation to contain non-whitespace text. Rule descriptions and tests cover empty, whitespace-only, and newline-only documentation.
Orphan reason write validation
rsworkspace/crates/trogon-atlas-server/tests/suppression_reasons.rs
Integration tests check orphan-reason validation after put_entity and batch_mutate writes. Whitespace-only reasons produce ORPHAN_DOC_EMPTY; a nonblank reason with surrounding spaces produces no orphan issue codes.

The annotation checks reject whitespace-only reasons. Additional Unicode and storage-preservation assertions would strengthen coverage, but neither finding establishes a current behavior defect preventing merge.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files. (1 skipped: 1 too large.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

A rabbit checks each reason’s text,
No blank or space can pass the test.
A padded phrase still counts as clear,
The warning stays when words aren’t here.
It hops through checks, then rests its ears.

A reason made only of whitespace says nothing, yet it silenced the same findings a written explanation does.

Add Unicode whitespace to the blank-reason tests.

BLANK_DOCS contains only ASCII whitespace. A change from trim() to trim_ascii() would pass these tests while accepting Unicode-only reasons.

Assert that the stored reason retains its whitespace.

If a write trims the reason, this test still passes because the trimmed reason suppresses the finding. Read the event back, decode OrphanAnnotation, and compare its doc with the submitted string.

ASCII-only cases would still pass if the check switched to ASCII trimming, and a write that dropped surrounding spaces would still look like a stated reason.
