feat(api): classify dependents of a version change as breaking or bump-only - #291
Deciding whether a new version can land meant diffing by hand and then filtering GetImpact paths by direction, which is slow and easy to get wrong when outgoing references look like dependents.
Callers need a categorical answer they can gate on (breaking, bump-only, unknown) with the exact ops and consumed fields that justify it, without a numeric score that hides why.
Additions are not always safe: projections and slices that must source every field break when one appears, so the classification models each reference site instead of treating additions as compatible.
The answer is computed from one read and names its snapshot id, so it never takes a lock and a concurrent write shows up as a different snapshot rather than a wrong answer.
Default chosen for review: missing, hidden or unresolvable dependents, a depth limit or a truncated snapshot make the answer UNKNOWN with a reason and never BUMP_ONLY, because a dependent that cannot be checked can still break.
Default chosen for review: a missing current or candidate version is NOT_FOUND, because there is nothing to compare.
Default chosen for review: the client reads BUMP_ONLY beside any incompleteness, an unrecognized verdict, or pages from different snapshots as unknown, and the CLI exits 12 for unknown.
Default chosen for review: reference sites without a consumption model are UNKNOWN unless the versions differ in documentation alone.
Note
Medium Risk
New server-side classification engine and graph traversal drive release gating workflows; behavior is read-only and feature-gated, but incorrect rules or incompleteness handling could mislead bump decisions.
Overview
Adds ClassifyImpact (wire contract 22, impact_classification feature): a read-only RPC that diffs two exact versions, walks incoming referrers only (up to 16 hops), and labels each dependent breaking, bump-only, or unknown with consumed_paths, causal_ops, transitively inherited risk, and snapshot_id-scoped incompleteness reasons. Classification is fail-closed—anything not provably bump-only (hidden dependents, depth/snapshot limits, opaque consumption, field additions that slices/projections must source, and similar) stays unknown.
Surfaces: Rust client (impact::classify with paging and clientVerdict), CLI trogon-atlas classify-impact (exit 0 / 1 / 12 / 8 when unsupported), and MCP classify_impact. Docs and how-tos now center this flow instead of manual diff_entities + get_impact intersection.
Supporting changes:DiffEntities reports .repeated, .optional, and .metadata field changes (used by the classifier); server classify_impact handler plus a large impact_classification engine; snapshot cache generation guard and owner view cache keyed by baseline Arc so filtered views cannot cross stale loads; is_derived_field shared for sourcing rules; dependency-scan ignore entries for test-only advisories.

Walkthrough
The change adds ClassifyImpact to the event-model API. The server classifies dependents of an exact current version against an exact candidate version. The Rust client, CLI, and MCP tool expose the result, including incomplete classifications and snapshot information.

New correctness-critical read path for version promotion gates; wrong breaking/bump-only labels could mislead migrations, though the RPC is read-only and heavily tested.
Overview
Adds ClassifyImpact: compare an exact current and candidate version, walk incoming referrers only, and label each dependent breaking, bump-only, or unknown, with causal_ops, consumed_paths, and snapshot_id. Classification fails closed—incomplete traversal, hidden dependents, or unmodeled reference sites never read as bump-only.
Surfaces: gRPC (Reader, GetServerInfo.features.impact_classification), Rust client with paging and clientVerdict, trogon-atlas classify-impact (exit 0 / 1 / 12), and MCP classify_impact. Docs replace the manual diff_entities + get_impact workflow in the blast-radius how-to and add docs/reference/impact-classification.md.
Server work includes a large impact_classification engine (per-site consumption rules, including field additions for projections and command sourcing), diff_entities ops for .repeated, .optional, and .metadata, and snapshot-cache fixes so truncation flags stay paired with the load that produced them.
Integration tests cover verdicts, transitivity, paging, branches, visibility, and parity with the documented manual procedure.

Add a client test that drives classify through two pages.
classify requests the next page with next_page_token. It merges dependents into the first page and sets PageSnapshots::Mixed when a later page has a different snapshot_id. No test under rsworkspace/crates/trogon-atlas-client/tests references impact::, ImpactClassification, ImpactVerdict, or classify_impact. The in-file tests build PageSnapshots::Mixed directly and do not call classify. The CLI and MCP fixtures return one page each.
A change that stops after the first page, drops dependents from later pages, or ignores a snapshot change would not fail any test.
Add a test with a stub service that returns two pages with different snapshot IDs. Assert:
Both requests, including the page_token sent with the second request.
The dependents merged from both pages.
The resulting verdict and PageSnapshots value.

Scoped readers cannot use get_snapshot_id to detect hidden dependents.
classify_impact computes snapshot_id from the visible set. It computes the hidden-dependent verdict from the full snapshot. A hidden write that adds a dependent of the current version leaves the visible set unchanged. get_snapshot_id then returns the same ID, while a fresh classification returns HIDDEN_DEPENDENTS and UNKNOWN.
The guide says the answer holds for the reported snapshot_id, and the reference says state changes appear as a different snapshot_id. For a namespace-scoped reader, the documented before-landing recheck can pass when the answer is no longer valid.
Revise the recheck guidance so scoped readers run classify_impact again before landing. Do not rely on get_snapshot_id alone. Changing snapshot_id to include hidden state would need a separate design, because a hash of hidden entities could reveal information to scoped readers.

A walk that stops at 16 hops cannot recover the dependents DEPTH_LIMITED omitted. A transitive dependent inherits the intermediate it references, so a break there stays unknown instead of a field intersection with the root.
