closes #13974

bit Boilerplate

  • The seeded accounts' password is 12345678 in the template, and a random generator in template.json replaces it with an 8 digit number on every dotnet new. The seed hashes it in Identity's own format, salted with the project's own GUID (which dotnet new also randomizes), since HasData needs the same hash on every model build and the template engine can't hash at creation time; equal passwords still hash differently in different projects. The template tree's Initial migration has the new hash. The demos page, the multi-tenancy hint and the E2E tests against the live demos use 12345678 too.
  • Passwords need at least 8 characters, in Identity's options and the sign up, change and reset password DTOs.
  • bit.json at the project root records the template, its version, the project's name and every option's value; dotnet new fills it in. It replaces the version and command block in README.md, which developers rewrite or delete, and the bit CLI can keep more there later. Only projects created from now on have it.
  • /healthz answers 503 when a check is Unhealthy, like /health. The operations page, the integration test and the E2E test still read the report from a 503, through a new AllowedStatusCodes request option the exception handler respects.
  • The app host runs without a container runtime: when neither Docker nor Podman is running, RunWithoutContainerRuntime drops the containers' named volumes, which Aspire otherwise waits for until it ends the run. The projects come up, only the containers are missing. ContainerRuntime picks the runtime the way Aspire does, so the containers keeper calls podman when Aspire uses Podman.
  • New upgrade skill, with its bridges and docs. It runs bit diff, treats the old version as the common ancestor of the new one and the project, ignores what the template randomizes on every run, adds the migrations the changes need, updates the version bit.json and the MCP configs record, and deletes the diff's folder with bit remove.
  • GoToInApp is no longer limited to advanced test projects: the image editor UI test uses it, so a default project's tests didn't build.
  • The image editor saves the edited picture as WebP, or as JPEG where the browser can't encode WebP (Safari), still within 10 MB. It no longer depends on the uploaded file's type, so ImageEditorService.Edit has no content type parameter.
  • Docs updated for running without Docker, Podman, the dev container and /healthz.

bit CLI

  • Containers come from a runtime that's free for commercial use: Podman on Windows (installed per user, so no admin prompt, its machine initialized and started at sign-in), Colima with the docker CLI and buildx on macOS (started at sign-in through brew services), Docker Engine on Linux as before. A Docker that's already installed still counts.
  • A project that doesn't wait for a container (no SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL or Redis) is started even without Docker or Podman. Docker or Podman and WSL are still installed for it, but a failure or a restart they ask for is a note, not a warning, and the virtualization warning only shows when containers or the Android emulator really need it. Outside a project, bit doctor doesn't treat containers as required.
  • The memory warning is under 15 GB.
  • The VS Code extensions step installs the project's recommendations except C# Dev Kit and the .NET MAUI extension, which come with Visual Studio's license; it installs the C# extension instead. Both stay recommended in .vscode/extensions.json. Afterwards it checks in VS Code which ones are really there, installs the missing ones once more, and names those that still failed, as a warning.
  • The GitHub sign-in runs gh in the background: bit shows the one-time code, opens GitHub's device page, and Esc skips the sign-in and the repository instead of Ctrl+C ending the whole run.
  • At the end, bit new and bit setup start the project (aspire start, or dotnet run of Server.Web, plus Server.Api when it's standalone), open the Aspire dashboard and then the app in the browser, and keep it running until the terminal is closed or Ctrl+C. Without a terminal, under a coding agent or in a dev container, they start it once with Aspire and stop it as before; CI starts nothing. --no-run skips it. The summary prints the password from the new project's README.
  • New bit diff [from] [to]. In a project it takes the name, version and options from bit.json, creates the project with both versions in a temp folder, into one git repository with one commit each, and writes the second commit as a patch there too. The project itself isn't touched. Options a version doesn't have are left out for it.

Website

  • The create project page sends the command to Telegram without the project name, and the server drops a name an older page still sends.
  • The platforms question has a Web answer that is always checked and can't be unchecked, instead of "Just the web app".
  • The getting started, create project and run project pages no longer mention Docker Desktop, say 15 GB, and say the seeded password is per project.

The test-platform skill offers a manual bit diff check next to the dev container and MCP checks, and its wording no longer assumes Docker Desktop.

Verified

  • The CLI tests, with new ones for Podman, Colima, the run modes, keeping the app running, dotnet run, starting without Docker and reading bit.json.
  • bit diff from nuget.org's 10.7.0-pre-02 to this branch's template, with options given.
  • bit new from this branch (SQLite, no Aspire): created, built, formatted and migrated; the sign-in and /healthz integration tests pass with the generated password.
  • On Windows: bit doctor --fix installed Podman with no admin prompt. bit setup in a real console window with Aspire on Podman pulled and ran Keycloak and Mailpit there, opened the dashboard and the app, and the keeper uses podman.exe. Without a usable runtime the app stayed healthy for 7.5 minutes. Closing the window stopped the app host both times.
  • The template tree and the website build; the platforms question checked in Chromium, light and dark, desktop and phone.
  • Not run: Colima on a Mac, and the image editor UI test after the WebP change (it starts the whole app host); Client.Core builds.

Walkthrough

This change adds bit diff, updates CLI project startup and container-runtime handling, and adds upgrade-agent guidance to the Boilerplate template. It also changes seeded passwords, health-check status handling, and project-creation page behavior and guidance.

Changes

Project startup and container runtimes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Container requirements and runtime setup
.github/agents/test-platform.md, .github/agents/test-platform/test-platform.ps1, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Projects/ProjectContext.cs, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Templates/TemplateSelection.cs, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Tools/*, src/Cli/Tests/Bit.Cli.Tests/HardwareTests.cs, src/Cli/Tests/Bit.Cli.Tests/ToolTests.cs, src/Cli/README.md
The CLI identifies when containers are required and updates runtime detection, installation, and hardware checks. Guidance now describes Docker or Podman on Windows, Colima on macOS, and Docker Engine on Linux.
Boilerplate container-runtime handling
src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Server/Boilerplate.Server.AppHost/Infrastructure/Services/*, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Server/Boilerplate.Server.AppHost/Infrastructure/Extensions/*, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Server/Boilerplate.Server.AppHost/Program.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Tests/Features/AppHost/ContainerRuntimeTests.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.docs/20- .NET Aspire.md
The AppHost detects the configured container runtime. When a runtime is unavailable, it removes container volume mounts and skips persistent-container setup.
Project startup and browser flow
src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Commands/*Command.cs, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Projects/*, src/Cli/Tests/Bit.Cli.Tests/ProjectStepTests.cs, src/Cli/Tests/Bit.Cli.Tests/Infrastructure/FakeProcessRunner.cs, src/Cli/README.md
The CLI selects whether to skip startup, run once, or keep the project running. Aspire and .NET startup paths check readiness and retain running-project details; interactive runs can open available URLs and wait for shutdown.

Version diff and upgrade workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Diff command and snapshot workflow
src/Cli/Bit.Cli/CliApp.cs, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Commands/DiffCommand.cs, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Projects/TemplateDiff.cs, src/Cli/Tests/Bit.Cli.Tests/{CommandTests.cs,DiffTests.cs}, src/Cli/README.md
bit diff reads project metadata and template options, generates and commits source and target snapshots in a Git repository, then writes a patch.
Seeded-account password generation
src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Projects/NewWorkflow.cs, src/Cli/Bit.Cli/Templates/TemplateLabels.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.template.config/*, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Server/Boilerplate.Server.Api/Features/Identity/Configurations/UserConfiguration.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Server/Boilerplate.Server.Api/Infrastructure/Data/Migrations/*, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Tests/Features/*, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/README.md, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.docs/*, src/Websites/Platform/src/Bit.Websites.Platform.Client/Pages/Templates/Templates05RunProjectPage.razor
The template accepts seedPassword and generates an eight-digit fallback. The CLI records and displays the selected password. Seeded account data, documentation, and tests use 12345678.
Upgrade agent and skill integration
src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.github/agents/upgrade.agent.md, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.agents/skills/upgrade/SKILL.md, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.claude/skills/upgrade/SKILL.md, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.gemini/commands/upgrade.toml, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.docs/18- Available Agent Skills.md, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/AGENTS.md, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/Boilerplate.sln*
The template adds an upgrade procedure and agent-skill entry points. The procedure covers identifying versions and options, reviewing upstream changes, applying changes, validating the project, and reporting results.

Health-check status handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Health endpoint status and report handling
src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Server/Boilerplate.Server.Shared/Infrastructure/Extensions/WebApplicationExtensions.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Client/Boilerplate.Client.Core/Components/Pages/Management/OperationsPage.razor.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Client/Boilerplate.Client.Core/Infrastructure/Services/HttpMessageHandlers/*, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Internal/Boilerplate.Tests.E2E/Features/HealthChecks/HealthCheckTests.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/src/Tests/Features/Diagnostics/HealthCheckIntegrationTests.cs, src/Templates/Boilerplate/Bit.Boilerplate/.docs/15- Logging, OpenTelemetry and Health Checks.md
Unhealthy health checks now use the framework’s default HTTP status mapping. Client requests and tests allow HTTP 503 while reading the report body.

Project-creation page updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project setup guidance and locked Web choice
src/Websites/Platform/src/Bit.Websites.Platform.Client/Pages/Templates/Templates02GettingStartedPage.razor, src/Websites/Platform/src/Bit.Websites.Platform.Client/Pages/Templates/Templates04CreateProjectPage.razor*, src/Websites/Platform/src/Bit.Websites.Platform.Client/Pages/Templates/Templates05RunProjectPage.razor
The pages describe platform-specific container runtimes and project startup. The Web answer is locked and cannot be selected or cleared.
Copied command formatting
src/Websites/Platform/src/Bit.Websites.Platform.Client/Pages/Templates/CreateProject/*, src/Websites/Platform/src/Bit.Websites.Platform.Server/Services/TelegramBotService.cs
The copied command omits the project name. Telegram formatting removes the project name from a leading bit new command.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes address the active coding requirements in #13974. Boilerplate now supports a generated eight-digit seed password, updated Identity seeds, unhealthy /healthz status codes with 503 report handling, container-runtime detection, and startup without container volumes. The CLI adds cross-platform runtime handling, no-container startup, the under-15-GB warning threshold, persistent run modes, --no-run, bit diff, and the upgrade skill. The create-project page omits the project name for Telegram, locks Web as always enabled, and removes Docker Desktop guidance. The summary also identifies automated tests for these areas.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files remain connected to #13974. CLI implementation and tests support runtime setup, project startup, password handling, README parsing, and bit diff. Boilerplate migrations, health-check handlers, AppHost changes, tests, skills, and documentation support the requested template and upgrade work. Website, agent, and platform documentation changes support the requested create-project and runtime guidance. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Then hops through versions, patch in hand.
A seed is tucked where passwords grow,
While project servers start and glow.
Health checks report their status true,
And runtime paths take rabbits through.
