Summary

Fixes DEVA11Y-477 / F-005 (CWE-829), which was reopened by the 2026-10-10 security retest. The Package.swift that scripts/{bash,zsh,fish}/spm.sh generate tracked branch: "main", so every scan resolved whatever was at the tip of main at that moment. PR #30 pinned it once, but that was reverted because the scans are supposed to always use the latest plugin.

This PR keeps the "always latest" behaviour, but delivers it through a reviewed, immutable pin instead of a mutable branch.

What changed

  • Pin: the three spm.sh variants now generate .package(url: …, revision: "806f98cb0e8a93656e52aba6394b9366ec0c5b3b"). That is the latest first-parent main commit touching Package.swift / Plugins/. The .sha256 self-update sidecars are regenerated.
  • .github/scripts/update-spm-pin.sh: rewrites the pin (from branch: or an older revision:) in all three scripts and regenerates their sidecars. With no argument it pins to the latest first-parent origin/main commit that touched the plugin. It rejects anything that isn't a full 40-character SHA.
  • .github/workflows/spm-pin-bump.yml:
    • bump runs on a push to main that touches Package.swift / Plugins/**, on a weekly schedule, and on manual dispatch. It runs the script and force-updates the bot branch ci/spm-pin-bump, then opens or updates a PR. The PR body lists the plugin commits between the old and new pin so the reviewer sees exactly what users will start running.
    • guard runs on PRs touching scripts/. It fails if any spm.sh stops pinning a full 40-character revision, so a quiet revert to branch: "main" (what happened in PR fix(scripts): pin self-update + SPM dependency to immutable revision (DEVA11Y-475,478,477) #30) is caught.

Design notes

  • Bumps go through a PR, not a direct push. main is protected (1 review plus semgrep/ci and Claude Code Review), and the review step is the security control F-005 asks for. Pushing HEAD of main automatically would bring back the mutable-ref problem.
  • No bump loop. The pin follows commits that touch the plugin. Bump PRs only touch scripts/, so merging one leaves the computed SHA unchanged and the next run does nothing.
  • Required checks on bot PRs. PRs opened with the default GITHUB_TOKEN don't trigger other workflows, so the required checks won't start on their own. Add a PIN_BUMP_TOKEN secret (a GitHub App installation token or a fine-grained PAT with contents + pull-requests write) and the workflow uses it automatically. Without it, close and reopen the bump PR to start the checks.
  • Once release tags exist, the script can switch to .exact("x.y.z").

Validation

  • Ran update-spm-pin.sh locally:
    • all three .sha256 sidecars pass shasum -a 256 -c;
    • bash -n passes on all three scripts;
    • a second run makes no changes;
    • re-pinning over an existing revision: works;
    • a non-SHA argument is rejected.
  • swift package resolve on the generated manifest resolves to 806f98cb0e8a93656e52aba6394b9366ec0c5b3b.
  • actionlint (workflow) and shellcheck (script) are clean.
  • The guard regex accepts all three pinned scripts and rejects branch: "main".
  • Not exercised: the bump job itself. It only runs on main / dispatch, so it can be tested with a workflow_dispatch after merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Maintenance
    • The Swift package dependency is now pinned to a specific revision across Bash, Zsh, and Fish scripts, providing consistent dependency versions.
    • Dependency pins can be updated automatically when relevant package changes are made, on a weekly schedule, or on demand.
    • Checks help ensure the scripts continue to use revision-based pins.

…t (DEVA11Y-477)

scripts/{bash,zsh,fish}/spm.sh generated a Package.swift that tracked
branch: "main", so every scan resolved whatever HEAD of main was at that moment
(F-005, CWE-829). Pin it to revision 806f98c (latest main commit touching
Package.swift/Plugins) and regenerate the .sha256 self-update sidecars.

To keep scans on the latest plugin without a mutable ref, add
spm-pin-bump.yml: when plugin code lands on main (plus weekly / manual), it
runs .github/scripts/update-spm-pin.sh and opens or refreshes a PR moving the
pin, listing the plugin commits being pulled in. Bumps go through review, and
since bump PRs only touch scripts/ they never move the pin themselves. A guard
job fails PRs where any spm.sh stops pinning a full 40-char revision, so the
PR #30-style revert to branch: "main" can't recur silently.

📝 Walkthrough

The Bash, Zsh, and Fish SPM scripts now use a fixed AccessibilityDevTools revision with updated checksum sidecars. A new script selects and applies revisions. A GitHub Actions workflow runs pin updates and checks pull requests for revision pins.

Changes: SPM Pin Automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select and synchronize dependency pins
.github/scripts/update-spm-pin.sh, scripts/*/spm.sh, scripts/*/spm.sh.sha256
The script accepts or selects a commit SHA, updates the dependency pin in all three shell scripts, and regenerates each checksum sidecar. The scripts now use revision 806f98cb0e8a93656e52aba6394b9366ec0c5b3b.
Automate pin updates and validate pull requests
.github/workflows/spm-pin-bump.yml
The workflow runs on pushes, pull requests, a weekly schedule, and manual dispatch. It creates or updates a pull request when pins change and checks that each shell script contains a 40-character revision pin.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c2c17

The current installers use the same plugin revision. Before relying on the new PR guard, make it reject future changes that give Bash, Zsh, and Fish users different versions.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c2c17

The change improves dependency integrity by replacing a moving branch with commit pins. The new pull-request guard unnecessarily retains a read-only checkout credential, but its subsequent steps only inspect fixed files. Write-capable update automation is separated from pull-request execution. Merge-protection settings and the optional bot token’s actual restrictions were not verified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The newly added pull-request guard leaves checkout authentication persisted despite needing only local file inspection. This unnecessarily retains a repository-read credential in the job environment. Current subsequent steps perform fixed-path grep checks rather than executing checked-out scripts, substantially limiting demonstrated exploitability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A malicious accepted pin could affect developers or CI environments using any of the three synthetic-manifest launchers, inheriting the plugin’s existing credentials, network access, and allowed filesystem writes. The new automation can write repository content and PRs, but its configured push target is the bot branch. Actual alternate-token privileges are not available for verification.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained finding is unnecessary persistence of the guard’s checkout credential. PR-controlled file contents reach fixed-path text inspection, not execution by the guard. The current steps demonstrate neither credential extraction nor repository-write access, supporting the finding’s low impact and likelihood.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pull-request events run the read-only guard and are excluded from the write-capable bump job. The bump job explicitly checks out main, uses an immutable checkout-action revision, and publishes a PR rather than directly changing main. These controls separate ordinary PR file input from the privileged update path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Launcher self-update remains explicitly requested and follows main. Its checksum is an integrity check from the same origin, not an independent authenticity guarantee. Mismatched downloads are rejected before atomic replacement. These existing controls are unchanged by the pin automation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Disable credential persistence in the inspection-only guard. Confirm that replacement bot-branch heads invalidate stale approvals and receive fresh required checks, and restrict the alternate bot token to the intended repository and operations.

18-18: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The concern does not apply to this package. Package.swift declares only the a11y-scan plugin and no Sources/, resource, binary-target, or transitive package inputs. The plugin implementation is under Plugins/, which the script tracks. No change is needed for this concern.
