VMOD useful to access to contents of environment variables and local or remote files from VCL, usually for configuration purposes.
Currently (1) JSON files; (2) Python's ConfigParser .INI-like files; (3) files containing collections of pattern matching rules; (4) Lua 5.1 scripts; and (5) ECMAScript (i.e. JavaScript) scripts are supported. Remote files can be accessed via HTTP or HTTPS.
Wondering why I created this VMOD? How it could make your life easier? I wrote a blog post with some answers: Moving logic to the caching edge (and back).
Vinyl Cache, Varnish Cache, and Varnish Enterprise are all supported by this VMOD. Looking for official support? Please contact Allenta Consulting, a Varnish Software Premium partner.

The original goal of this VMOD was offering efficient strategies to parametrize VCL behavior based on information provided by external local or remote data sources. That evolved from environment variables and configuration JSON / INI files, to simple Lua / JavaScript programs executed in local interpreters embedded in the VCache core. All these strategies, specially the one based on INI files and the one based on Lua scripts interpreted by LuaJIT, have been successfully and extensively tested in several highly trafficked environments.
At some point the VMOD evolved towards a more general framework useful to execute arbitrarily complex Lua and JavaScript programs. Somehow something similar to OpenResty in the Nginx arena. For example, using the cfg VMOD you can write crazy Lua-flavoured VCL. That includes loading any rocks you might need, facilities to safely share state among execution engines or among VCache threads, etc. Used with caution, this allows you to go beyond the limits of VCL as a language and help you to model complex logic in the caching layer. Of course, you can also use the VMOD to shoot yourself in the foot.
Next you can see a simple useless example showing the power of the VMOD.
Beware it assumes a local Redis Server running and it depends on the
http, redis-lua and lua-cjson rocks. As well, beware VCache
should be started with the right environment variables properly configured
(i.e. eval `luarocks path`).

The source tree is based on autotools to configure the building, and does also have the necessary bits in place to do functional unit tests using the test tool.
Beware this project contains multiples branches (main, 4.1, 4.0, etc.). Please, select the branch to be used depending on your VCache version (VCache trunk → main, VCache 4.1.x → 4.1, VCache 4.0.x → 4.0, etc.).
Dependencies:
- libcurl - multi-protocol file transfer library.
- luajit (recommended; disabled with
--disable-luajit) or lua 5.1 - powerful, efficient, lightweight, embeddable scripting language.
Beware using LuaJIT GC64 mode is recommended is order to avoid not enough memory errors due to the 2 GiB (os much less) limitation. See this excellent post by OpenResty for details.
Messages logged by the VMOD are always sent to the VCache Shared memory Log (VSL), using the VCL_Error tag for errors, the VCL_Log tag for other relevant messages, and the Debug tag for debug messages. Whenever possible messages are attached to the transaction being processed; otherwise they are logged without a VXID (e.g., messages generated during initializations or by background threads).
Additionally, messages can be duplicated to extra sinks selected using the VMOD_CFG_LOG_SINKS environment variable, which is checked for occurrences of the following tokens:
syslog: messages are also submitted to syslog. This is the default behavior when the environment variable is not set.stderr: messages are also written to the standard error output. This is specially useful in containerized environments, where syslog is usually not available and where the manager process standard error output is typically forwarded to the container logs.
Multiple sinks can be combined (e.g., VMOD_CFG_LOG_SINKS=syslog,stderr), and both can be disabled using any value not containing those tokens (e.g., VMOD_CFG_LOG_SINKS=none). In any case, VSL logging is always enabled.
The test suite is executed using make check. Each .vtc test is wrapped by src/tests/runner.sh, which creates a temporary scratch folder (injected into the test as the ${tmp} macro, used by most tests as the place where configuration files, scripts, backups, etc. are stored) and sets up the environment variables required by some tests (i.e., LIBVMOD_CFG_VALUE).
The whole test suite or just a single test can be executed:
# Whole test suite. make check # Single test. make check TESTS=tests/file.remote.vtc
