What

  • guardener/github/configuration.md: says that organization-level configuration from the .github repository covers only Guardener's files, and that Chainguard Checks and Chainguard Workspaces never read ci.yaml, ci/, or develop.yaml from it.
  • checks/identity-and-trust.md: on the console-api.enforce.dev row, says that console.viewer isn't the name of an IAM role, and to bind the assumable identity to a role such as console_viewer.

Why

The Guardener page lists the Checks and Workspaces files right before its organization-level section, so readers could expect the .github repository to supply them. A repository without its own Checks configuration gets no checks.

The other roles in the identities table share names with built-in IAM roles, so console.viewer looks like a typo for console_viewer. Writing console_viewer in identities.yaml makes the file invalid, and no checks run for that commit.

How it was checked

  • Traced the configuration loaders in chainguard-dev/mono at the commit deployed to production on October 21. Guardener's organization fallback serves only actions.yaml and images.yaml. Chainguard Checks reads its files only from the pull request's repository. chainctl develop 0.2.388 reads develop.yaml only from the directory or repository you open.
  • Read the identities.yaml parser. For console-api.enforce.dev, it accepts only console.viewer and rejects console_viewer with an unsupported role error. No IAM role is named console.viewer, and the built-in console_viewer role includes every capability that console.viewer allows.
  • A second pass re-checked each finding at the cited lines.
  • pre-commit and markdownlint-cli2 0.23.3 pass on both pages.

For reviewers

Not changed: the organization-level example on the Guardener page lists source.yaml, but Commit Verification appears to read only the repository's own source.yaml. The page also doesn't mention that Guardener checks a .github-private repository after .github. Both need a check with the Guardener team first.

Guardener's configuration page lists the Chainguard Checks and
Chainguard Workspaces files right before its organization-level
section, so they read as if the .github repository can supply them.
Neither product reads them from there, so say so on that page.

On the identities page, say that console.viewer isn't an IAM role
name, and which built-in role to bind the assumable identity to.
