Summary

Native e2e specs failed on master in a macOS isolated worktree instance. The failures came from the test environment and from test hygiene. None of them is a QuickAdd UI defect. This PR fixes five causes, each reproduced in a live instance before the fix and verified after it.

  1. New choice menu specs (3 tests). On macOS, Obsidian treats an unset nativeMenus as native OS menus (app.updateUseNativeMenu), so no .menu element exists for a spec to find. The shared dev vault passes only because its appearance.json turns native menus off. The e2e setup now draws menus in the page. It sets the config, calls updateUseNativeMenu(), and restores the config, so a later config save cannot write the override to a real vault.
  2. package-import-result. The import summary overhangs the scroll body by exactly 0.0703125px at every window size tried. Scroll offsets snap to device pixels on a 2x display. The check now allows half a pixel. A spec with the modal's scrollIntoView removed still fails it.
  3. one-page-pinned-actions (flaky). There are two causes. A test window covered by other windows reports visibilityState: hidden and gets 0 animation frames, so the footer's scroll-driven animation never applies. The setup now turns on CDP focus emulation when the page is not already visible and focused. The settings-popout-save hidden-window case turns it off, because it needs throttled timers: 302 timer ticks in 3s with emulation, 3 without. Separately, Submit's focus ring grows from 0 to 3px over a 0.15s transition, and the spec measured it once right after Tab. It now waits for the transition to finish. Mutations with footer padding of 0 and of 2px both fail the check.
  4. external-settings-change "does not treat its own saves as external changes". It flipped showCaptureNotification through the plugin's own save and never flipped it back, inverting the value in data.json on every run. It now restores the value in a finally through the same path. After two runs, data.json is byte-identical.
  5. templater-rerun-deprecation. It never disconnected the MutationObserver that pushes into window.__qaNotices. Once that spec had run, choice-builder-pages "says once that a choice deleted elsewhere..." saw its one notice twice. The spec now disconnects the observer after each test.

Verification

All runs used a fresh isolated instance (Obsidian 1.14.3, macOS).

Not fixed here

Release impact

None. Only tests change.

Note

Fix native e2e test failures on macOS and two spec leaks

  • Makes the e2e harness use page-rendered menus and enable main-window focus emulation before each test in setup.ts, restoring the native-menu setting afterward
  • Adds a setFocusEmulation helper in uiHelpers.ts that sends the CDP focus-emulation command and throws on a bad response
  • Fixes spec leaks: the external settings change test restores the original notification setting in a finally block, and the templater deprecation suite disconnects its notice observer in afterEach
  • Fixes flaky measurements: the pinned-actions test waits for focus-ring animations before asserting layout, and the package import test allows 0.5px of overhang at the dialog body edges
  • Behavioral Change: all e2e specs now run with non-native menus and focus emulation when the window is not visible or focused

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved end-to-end test coverage for settings saves, pinned actions, package import results, and template reruns.
    • Updated test setup to handle window focus and menu behavior more consistently, and to clean up notices between tests.

On macOS, Obsidian shows native OS menus unless the vault turns them off, so
specs that measure or click the New choice menu found no .menu. A test
instance is also usually covered by other windows, which stops animation
frames, so transitions and scroll-driven animations never applied.

The setup now turns native menus off in memory, restoring the vault's
setting so a later config save cannot persist it, and turns on CDP focus
emulation before each test. The popout save spec turns emulation off for
its hidden-window case, which needs throttled timers.
… is in view

Scrolling snaps to device pixels, so the summary scrolled flush with the
body overhangs it by 0.07px on a 2x display and the strict check failed.
The ring grows from 0 to 3px over 0.15s, so a read right after Tab could
see no ring and fail.
It flipped showCaptureNotification through the plugin's own save and never
flipped it back. The harness only restores data.json after a write through
plugin.data(), which would count as an external change here.
Left connected, it pushed every later notice into __qaNotices, so the choice
builder spec that checks a notice shows once saw it twice.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request updates E2E test setup and cleanup, adds focus-emulation control, restores a settings value after a test, and adjusts UI assertion timing and bounds.

Changes

E2E test stability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Focus emulation and popout setup
tests/e2e/uiHelpers.ts, tests/e2e/setup.ts, tests/e2e/settings-popout-save.test.ts
Adds a CDP helper for focus emulation. Setup checks document visibility and focus, manages native menus and the vault setting, and enables focus emulation when needed. The popout test disables it when mainWindow is "hidden".
Test state cleanup
tests/e2e/external-settings-change.test.ts, tests/e2e/templater-rerun-deprecation.test.ts
The settings test restores its original toggle value in a finally block. The notice observer disconnects after each test.
UI assertion timing and bounds
tests/e2e/one-page-pinned-actions.test.ts, tests/e2e/package-import-result.test.ts
The pinned-actions test waits for animations before measuring the focus ring. The import-result test allows up to 0.5 pixels of overhang at either review-body edge.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fbf4e

A setup failure can leave the test vault’s native-menu setting false for a later save. This is a bounded test-environment risk; the remaining changes have no established material issue.

A rabbit checks the focus glow,
Then lets the tiny timers go.
It saves the switch, restores it right,
And lets the notice end its flight.
“These tests are set,” it says with cheer,
Then bounds away with carrots near.

PASS+NOTES

Head fbf4edb, base 2abd73c (master's tests/e2e checked out into the same worktree). Isolated instance, Obsidian 1.14.3, macOS.

  1. Base fails, head passes:
    • Base: choice-list-layout "opens the New choice menu under its button" FAIL (expected false to be true), both choice-builder-pages Back from a choice's settings page clears the choice filter and moves focus to the top of the list #2150 tests FAIL (.menu-item never appears, 10s timeout), package-import-result FAIL (inView: false). 4 failed / 12 passed.
    • Head: same 3 files 16/16, run once with the window visible and once with it covered (20/20 with pinned-actions included).
    • one-page-pinned-actions on base, 5 runs: run 1 (window visible) 1/4 failed (is-phone focus ring). Runs 2-5 (window covered, visibilityState: hidden) 4/4 failed (15px inset misalignment, so the scroll-driven animation never applied).
    • one-page-pinned-actions on head: 5 runs 4/4, plus 3 runs of menu + pinned-actions together at 7/7 with the window confirmed hidden (emulation off) before and after.
  2. external-settings-change leak: base flipped data.json showCaptureNotification true -> false (7742 -> 7743 bytes, sha256 f3db13a9 -> 7e5dd177). Head, 2 runs: byte-identical (cmp clean, sha 7e5dd177 before and after both runs), 7/7 passing each run.
  3. templater-rerun-deprecation observer leak: after the base spec, a fake .notice appended to body was recorded in window.__qaNotices (recorded: true). After location.reload() and the head spec, it was not recorded (recorded: false).
  4. Full head suite, window covered: 449 passed, 24 skipped (Templater-gated), 1 failed. The failure is choice-builder-pages-phone "keeps the focused field and its suggestions above the keyboard..." (More options for Phone macro never appears), the known fix(settings): stop an unloaded QuickAdd from adding or removing choice commands #2215 regression tracked in e2e: choice-builder-pages-phone fails since #2215 (row never holds still after reload) #2218. No other failures, so nothing needed a rerun. settings-popout-save has no skip gate, so both of its window cases ran and passed.
  5. Diff review: nothing masks a user-facing defect, and nothing leaks into a real vault.
    • app.updateUseNativeMenu is e=vault.getConfig("nativeMenus"); isMacOS&&null===e&&(e=!0); Menu.useNativeMenu=e. It sets only the in-memory flag. After the full suite no vault config file contains nativeMenus, and getConfig("nativeMenus") still returns null.
    • Focus emulation toggles as claimed. Window covered, timer ticks in 3s at a 10ms interval: off 5, on 300, off 4. So the popout spec's setFocusEmulation(false) really restores throttling for its hidden case.

Notes (none block the merge):

  • On macOS the menu specs now exercise page-drawn menus. Users on macOS with default settings get native OS menus, which the DOM can't observe, so no testable path is lost. It just means those specs never cover the native-menu path.
  • In this instance document.hasFocus() stayed true even while the window was hidden, so the inFront gate effectively keys on visibilityState. Harmless, since a covered window still triggers emulation.
  • The restore leaves nativeMenus as an own undefined property on app.vault.config. getConfig maps undefined to the default and JSON serialization drops it, so the behavior is unchanged.
  • During one head run a CLI dispatch (Input.dispatchMouseEvent mouseReleased) lost its reply and left a client process hanging. The harness recovered and the run passed. This is the known transport noise, not this PR.
