Why

obsidian-e2e 0.12 could only launch Obsidian through macOS's open, so QuickAdd patched the installed runner on Linux to call a local open shim. obsidian-e2e 0.13.0 launches Obsidian on Linux itself, on a private Xvfb display when $DISPLAY is unset. It also keeps each instance's CLI socket in its private home. This PR bumps to 0.13.0 and deletes the patch.

What changed

  • Bump obsidian-e2e to ^0.13.0. Delete .agents/patch-obsidian-e2e-linux.mjs, .agents/obsidian-open, their unit tests, and their calls in .agents/setup, .agents/resume and .agents/run-e2e.
  • On Linux the CLI socket follows XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, which 0.13.0 sets only in the processes it starts. The docs drop AGENTS.md's bare obsidian reload command, set both HOME and XDG_RUNTIME_DIR for capture-instance commands, and drop the suite recipe's export HOME. The e2e client already gets the instance env from resolveObsidianEnvOptions.

Scope

  • Covers the e2e runner on Linux and the docs that reach an instance's CLI. Plugin code and macOS behavior do not change. On macOS, 0.13.0 makes the same open call as 0.12.
  • Leaves out the export HOME in .agents/run-e2e, which the suite no longer needs. Removing it needs a macOS run.
  • Known gap: on a Linux desktop with $DISPLAY set, the e2e app now opens on the real display. The shim always used Xvfb. Use env -u DISPLAY .agents/run-e2e to keep it headless.

Blast Radius

This touches agent tooling, test infrastructure, and docs only. Nothing ships in main.js, so there is no release or migration impact. An Amp orb set up before this PR needs no new setup step. pnpm install picks up 0.13.0, and setup already installed the obsidian CLI client, Xvfb and xauth that 0.13.0 needs.

Verification

  • Fresh clone of this branch on a headless Linux host with Obsidian 1.13.7: pnpm install --frozen-lockfile, then .agents/run-e2e. 96 spec files passed and 2 were skipped (450 tests passed, 24 skipped). The parent shell still had XDG_RUNTIME_DIR set. Teardown left no Obsidian or Xvfb processes and no xvfb-run temp dirs. The same run on master (0.12.2 with the patch) failed 17 files, mostly on 5-second plugin reload timeouts. It also leaked an xvfb-run.* dir.
  • A capture instance answered quickadd:list with the README's new HOME and XDG_RUNTIME_DIR form. The old HOME-only form got "The CLI is unable to find Obsidian". The suite recipe without export HOME passed 2 specs. obsidian:e2e -- --reload quickadd:list reloaded the plugin and returned ok:true.
  • pnpm run test, pnpm run build-with-lint and pnpm run check pass.

Note

Remove Linux launcher and bundle patcher for obsidian-e2e 0.13

  • Bumps obsidian-e2e from ^0.12.1 to ^0.13.0 in package.json; 0.13 handles Linux launching natively, so the local launcher shim and bundle patcher are no longer needed.
  • Deletes .agents/obsidian-open and .agents/patch-obsidian-e2e-linux.mjs, and removes patch invocations plus launcher/patcher prerequisite checks from .agents/run-e2e, .agents/setup, and .agents/resume.
  • Drops the corresponding tests from tests/orb-setup.test.ts and updates docs (AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, .agents/capture/README.md) — the HOME export before the E2E suite is gone, and capture commands now set XDG_RUNTIME_DIR to the capture HOME.
  • Behavioral Change: no more post-install patching of the obsidian-e2e bundle; Linux runs now rely on the upstream launcher behavior.

obsidian-e2e 0.13.0 launches isolated Obsidian instances on Linux itself,
on a private Xvfb display when there is no $DISPLAY, and keeps each
instance's CLI socket in its private HOME. QuickAdd's patch of the
installed runner and its `open` shim are no longer needed, so setup,
resume and run-e2e stop applying and checking them.
On Linux the CLI socket follows XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, which obsidian-e2e 0.13
sets only for the processes it starts. A bare `obsidian` call with HOME
alone misses the instance. AGENTS.md drops its bare reload command (the
`obsidian:e2e -- --reload` instruction covers it), the capture commands
set both variables, and the suite recipes drop their HOME export: the e2e
client already gets the instance's env from resolveObsidianEnvOptions.

Existing installations may retain a broken system open command after setup. Restore the legacy bridge cleanup; the new E2E launcher itself is unaffected.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore cleanup for the legacy global bridge.

On an existing installation where /usr/bin/open points to /usr/local/lib/quickadd-obsidian-open, this setup leaves the bridge active. The shim rejects normal open arguments with status 2, so the system open command remains broken. obsidian-e2e 0.13.0 bypasses the bridge on Linux and launches /opt/Obsidian/obsidian directly, so this does not break the new E2E launch.

Re CodeRabbit's "Restore cleanup for the legacy global bridge" (setup:163-170): not restoring it. The /usr/local/lib/quickadd-obsidian-open bridge only existed while 914fcb3 was in development. That commit, the first to provision orbs on master, already shipped the cleanup, so no orb set up from master ever installed the bridge. The cleanup had no remaining target.
