fix(date): keep a nested variable day under Pick a day - #2266
Running a macro through its "Name (pick a day)" command gave every nested choice the picked day. A nested Template whose Which day is A variable… wrote the picked date instead of its variable. A macro's own Which day did the same without Pick a day.
There were two causes. pickDate stayed on for the whole run, so every nested choice's Which day became Ask. Separately, planDateOrigin let an enclosing day win over any nested setting, variables included.
How Which day now works
A day handed to a choice by whoever runs it replaces that one choice's Which day, even under an enclosing day. This covers Pick a day, Shift in the menu, CLI/URI date= (including date=ask), and executeChoiceoptions.date. The choices it runs do not get the caller's day directly. They inherit the day the choice resolved, like any enclosing day.
A nested choice set to A variable… reads its variable, even under an enclosing day. A variable names a specific day from the run's data, not a position relative to today.
Nested choices on Today, Ask each time, or a relative day (Yesterday, Last week, Custom) keep inheriting the enclosing day, as the Macro docs say. Offsets do not stack. A weekly pack set to Last week whose templates are also set to Last week stays on last week, not two weeks back. An Ask child does not prompt a second time.
Changes
pickDate and the clock-carried invocation date become one pending field, callerDay?: "pick" | Date. It is read through dateOriginInput by the run, the one-page preview, and requirement collection, and cleared when the choice resolves its day.
A Multi passes the caller's day to the picked choice, since a folder has no Which day.
A one-page date answer (__qa.dateOrigin) answers one ask. A later ask in the same run prompts again instead of reusing it.
A macro's discovery form asks the picked day on the macro, not on each step.
The Macro docs mention that variable children keep their day.
Verification
src/choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts covers Pick a day, a macro's own day, an invocation date, a nested date: "ask", a Multi, and the one-time answer. The repro commit lands before the fix. Each later test fails with its fix reverted.
tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts runs the reporter's setup in Obsidian: a script sets testDate, then the :pick-day command runs with a typed date. Before the fix, picked/variable/2026-01-02.md was missing. After the fix, both files land on their own days.
pnpm run test (6975 passed), pnpm run lint, and the date and prompt native specs (date-origin-scope, template-discovery-actions, prompt-cancellation, daily-note-token, date-prompt-draft, date-case-transform, peek-over-plugin-modal, choice-command-removal) pass.
Two independent reviewers covered the change. The last commit, eba9e1f2, has not had its own independent review.
Not in this PR
A variable… cannot read a global variable. In Obsidian it fails on every run with Date origin variable "testDate" is not set., because global variables only expand as {{GLOBAL_VAR:…}} text. The issue mentions a global variable, so this needs its own issue.
A macro run through {{MACRO:…}} ignores its own Which day (SingleMacroEngine). This predates this branch.
Release impact
This is a behavior change for nested variable choices under a dated macro or Pick a day: they now use their variable. There is no data migration.
Note
Fix nested variable-day resolution under a picked day in choice executor
Replaces the pickDate flag with a CallerDay type ("pick" or a concrete Date) across the executor, API, and preflight. The caller's day applies to the next non-Multi choice; a Multi choice passes it to its selected child so a nested choice can keep its own day.
Adds dateOriginInput in resolveDateOrigin.ts to combine the choice's date-origin setting with clocks and callerDay. A variable-based date origin now resolves its own variable even when the inherited clock already has a date, fixing the nested variable-day case.
Preflight date requirements for macro runs are now collected at the macro level instead of being re-requested by each step (discoveryFormPlan.ts).
executeChoice, the ChoiceSuggester Shift-key path, and registered choice commands all apply and restore callerDay around a single choice's execution.
Behavioral Change: applyInvocationDate writes to callerDay instead of mutating pickDate or clocks; executeChoice no longer saves/restores the executor's clocks. A collected date seed is consumed by one Ask resolution and then removed.
Medium Risk
Changes core date-resolution for macros, API executeChoice, and one-page forms; behavior shifts for nested variable dates under dated runs, though coverage is extensive.
Overview
Fixes incorrect Which day behavior when a macro (or caller) supplies a picked or explicit date: nested choices set to A variable… now keep their variable’s day instead of inheriting the caller’s date.
pickDate is replaced by callerDay ("pick" | Date), applied only to the next choice that resolves a date via new dateOriginInput. That override is cleared once that choice resolves; nested steps inherit the resolved day like before. planDateOrigin no longer lets an enclosing clock date override a variable date origin.
Call sites updated include ChoiceExecutor, executeChoice, Shift-in-suggester, one-page preflight/preview, and requirement collection (macro-level date prompt for Pick a day, step mode so macro children don’t duplicate asks). Multi folders defer the caller’s day to the selected child. A single collected __qa.dateOrigin answer applies to one Ask only.
Docs note that variable macro children keep their day under Name (pick a day). Tests and an e2e cover Pick a day, invocation dates, Multi, and nested date: "ask".

Bug Fixes
A child choice set to A variable… now keeps the variable’s date when run from a macro using Name (pick a day).
Picked or inherited dates now carry through nested choices and previews more consistently. Choices configured for Today can use a caller-provided day, and invocation dates are applied consistently during execution.
Documentation
Clarified how variable-based dates behave when a macro asks you to pick a day.

Walkthrough
The change replaces pickDate with callerDay, which represents either a request to pick a day or a specific date. Date resolution, execution entry points, and preflight handling now use this value. Variable date origins resolve independently of an enclosing picked day.

CallerDay represents a pick request or a date. Date-origin resolution uses the caller value and clocks, and variable settings resolve instead of inheriting an enclosing date. Tests cover nested choices, folders, and collected answers.
Registered choices, Shift execution, invocation dates, and executeChoice use callerDay in place of pickDate. Tests check its propagation and restoration.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2265] The issue requires that a nested Template with DATE set to a variable keep that variable's day when its enclosing macro runs with Pick a day. At head, planDateOrigin in src/utils/resolveDateOrigin.ts returns inherit only when clocks.date is set and setting.kind !== "variable". A variable setting therefore resolves its own day under an enclosing day. dateOriginInput gives a "pick" caller day to the choice being run, and ChoiceExecutor.resolveDateOrigin clears callerDay after that choice resolves. Nested choices then read their own settings. The macro's own Which day moves to the macro step, so its children no longer receive the picked day as their setting. tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts covers this case: the variable child writes picked/variable/2026-01-02.md and the Today child writes the picked day. Unit tests in src/choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts cover the same scoping. Global-variable reads are excluded by the PR and are not part of this issue's reproduction. Residual uncertainty: when a Template with a variable setting is run directly with Pick a day, dateOriginForPick maps the variable setting to ask, so the picker still prompts. The issue reproduction is nested, and the PR documents this behavior, so this case does not fail the nested requirement.

Explanation
All listed changes serve caller-day propagation and nested Which day resolution. IChoiceExecutor, ChoiceExecutor, quickAddApi.executeChoice, choiceSuggester Shift handling, and main.ts replace pickDate with callerDay. dateOriginInput, planDateOrigin, applyInvocationDate, collectChoiceRequirements, runOnePagePreflight, and discoveryFormPlan read the same field. Multi defers the caller day to the selected child. The one-time __qa.dateOrigin answer supports the one-ask requirement. The step preflight flag supports the macro-level picked-day requirement. The docs note and the unit and e2e tests cover these same paths. No unrelated change is demonstrated. Limitation: the whole-PR diff read for the changed blobs was unavailable, so this verdict relies on the supplied change summary and the head source of src/utils/resolveDateOrigin.ts, src/choiceExecutor.ts, src/types/dateOriginPresets.ts, and tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts.
