Summary

Adds a D1 changelog entry for exporting databases that contain virtual tables (FTS5 full-text search tables, R*Tree spatial index tables). Databases containing virtual tables previously could not be exported at all.

  • Export uses the D1 export API with dump_options.compatibility set to sqlite3_cli_only, producing a dump compatible with the SQLite CLI.
  • The entry documents that this dump cannot be imported back into D1; the standard export remains for databases without virtual tables.
  • Dated 2026-10-28 so the entry publishes on that date, leaving time for last-minute changes before it goes live.

Follow-ups to complete before the publish date:

  • Add the exact flag name for wrangler d1 export. The option is not yet shipped in a published wrangler release, so the entry currently says the option is available on wrangler d1 export and in the Cloudflare CLI without naming the flag.
  • Confirm the "Cloudflare CLI" wording and its flag name.
  • The entry links to a new section of the import/export docs page (/d1/best-practices/import-export-data/#export-a-d1-database-with-virtual-tables) that is being added in a separate docs PR — the two should land together.

⚠️ @ivoryibu This pull request adds a changelog entry dated in the past:

  • src/content/changelog/d1/2026-10-28-d1-export-virtual-tables.mdx — dated 2026-10-28

Typically, changelog entries should be dated the day they merge. This is not blocking — if the date is unintentional, please update it.

You can now export a D1 database that contains virtual tables, such as full-text search tables using SQLite's [FTS5 module](https://www.sqlite.org/fts5.html) or spatial index tables using the `R*Tree` module. Previously, export failed for any database containing virtual tables.

To include virtual tables in the dump, set `dump_options.compatibility` to `sqlite3_cli_only` on the [D1 export API](/api/resources/d1/subresources/database/methods/export/). The same option is available as a flag on `wrangler d1 export` and in the Cloudflare CLI.

I still need to open the MR for wrangler, I will do so tomorrow morning. CF CLI is not supported yet because the export command currently doesn't work.
