TL;DR

  • Avoid temporary reference-row copies for eight-bit HEVC interpolation when every horizontal tap is inside the coded picture.

Background

The opt-in decoder gathers every interpolation source row through a clamped column map. Most interior blocks already reference consecutive samples, so that work repeats without changing the filter inputs.

What changes

  • Covered: eight-bit interior reference-row access, with the existing filter arithmetic and support checks.
  • Not covered: ten-bit optimization, new SIMD, predictor combination, scheduling or boundary replication changes.

After merging: None.

Decisions

  • Borrow only a checked consecutive source slice. Keep the existing gather when a tap crosses either picture edge, and keep the full support validation before any output write.
  • Leave the horizontal and vertical filters, rounding, scratch footprint and ten-bit path unchanged. A separate instruction-count preflight removed only the interior column map and gather copies, not the filter arithmetic.
  • Keep reference-support calculation shared with scheduling; this change consumes its coordinates below that calculation rather than introducing another owner.

Evidence

Verification run: Linux arm64 development builds pass 46 kernel tests in each of automatic and forced-scalar modes and strict Clippy. The new regression checks literal interpolation equations at exact source-row extents, both neighboring edge cases, independent strides, unpadded final rows and invalid support samples before writes. Formatting and diff checks pass. At 6b003e899d6077e4d445487c6c20e70fa4763475, complete forced-scalar and automatic conformance both pass, including all five required evidence jobs and every required proof step in each mode. The exact-head verifier passes, and actual vector build flags confirm the two modes. No wall-time speed claim is made here.

Exact-head similarity at 6b003e899d6077e4d445487c6c20e70fa4763475 passes: 112 spans, 0 not allowlisted, 0 problems and 0 stale entries.

Walkthrough

For eligible 8-bit inputs, interpolation now reads a contiguous reference-row slice. Other inputs retain the edge-clamped gather path. Tests cover exact filter-support extents, and a design document describes the path conditions.

Changes: HEVC interpolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select interpolation row input
crates/coreav-kernels-hevc/src/inter.rs
When the bit depth is 8 and horizontal filter support is in bounds, interpolation uses a direct reference-row slice. Otherwise, it gathers edge-clamped samples into scratch storage.
Check and document support extents
crates/coreav-kernels-hevc/src/inter_tests.rs, docs/design/hevc-reference-row-borrows.md
Tests compare outputs with scalar equations for selected widths and origins across 8-bit and 10-bit luma and chroma. They also check that an out-of-range sample returns Error::Sample without changing output. The design document describes the direct-slice and gather paths.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/coreav-kernels-hevc/src/inter.rs: The code now uses a contiguous source span only when the bit depth is 8 and the full horizontal support is in bounds. Other cases populate the scratch column map with edge-clamped coordinates; previously, all inputs used that mapped path.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/coreav-kernels-hevc/src/inter.rs: When the contiguous-path condition holds, the row input is sliced directly from the reference row. Otherwise, samples are gathered through the clamped column map into scratch storage, preserving the previous path for those cases.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/coreav-kernels-hevc/src/inter_tests.rs: Added a test covering exact filter-support reference extents for luma (8 taps) and chroma (4 taps), at 8- and 10-bit depths and supported selected widths. For origins one position before, at, and after the filter’s first tap, it compares interpolation output with equation_sample; when a sample exceeds the bit-depth range, it expects Error::Sample and unchanged output.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/design/hevc-reference-row-borrows.md: Added design documentation for the eight-bit interior-support borrow path, its retained boundary and ten-bit gather paths, unchanged support checks and filtering behavior, and the scope and limits of the diagnostic comparison.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "perf(hevc): borrow interior reference rows" follows Conventional Commits with the perf type and a clear scope. It names the primary change: eight-bit HEVC interpolation now borrows consecutive reference-row samples directly instead of gathering them through a clamped column map. It is 42 characters, under the template's 50-character limit, and it does not list several changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the template's main sections: TL;DR, Background, What changes (covered and not covered), Decisions, and Evidence with a verification run and links. The Background explains the gather-through-clamped-column-map cost. The Decisions section records the bounds-check and the shared reference-support choice. Two template items are missing or weak: the 'What changes for users' question is not answered, and the 'How it works' section (Mermaid diagram) is absent. The template treats that section as optional when the change stays inside one layer with no user-visible behavior change, so its absence is acceptable here. The 'Needs the maintainer' section is correctly omitted. The Evidence section states that complete conformance is pending, which is honest and clear. Minor issues: the TL;DR has one bullet, which is within the limit, and the template asks for the title to be restated in the TL;DR only as needed. Overall the description is mostly complete.

Review: no blocking issue

Reviewed head 6b003e899d6077e4d445487c6c20e70fa4763475 against base 80b030245.

Memory safety of the AVX2 loads. With borrowing, the slice passed to Avx2::horizontal is no longer a scratch copy. It is now reference.data[row + x_start .. row + x_start + source_width], and it is used only when x_start >= 0 and x_start + source_width <= reference.width. It is formed with a checked .get inside the row's active begin..begin + width, so it never covers stride padding, the next row, or bytes past the final row. Avx2::horizontal still requires source.len() >= output.len() + taps - 1. The last tap load ends at (lanes - 8) + (taps - 1) + 8 <= source.len(), so no load reaches past the borrowed sub-slice, even into memory inside the same allocation. Every input to the borrowed path stays on the gather path: an out-of-picture or extreme motion vector, any tap left of column 0 or right of width - 1, and every Main10 block. Clamped rows (top and bottom edges, i16::MIN/i16::MAX) borrow from the clamped row, which is the same row the gather read. The borrowed samples are exactly the columns x_start..=x_end and rows y_start..=y_end that the existing pre-write depth check already validates, so a borrowed sample is never unchecked. Chroma uses the same code with 4 taps, and odd widths go to the unchanged scalar tail. Record 0045's "no load may read padding outside the borrowed active region" still holds. The docs/unsafe-sites.md row for simd.rs ("every tap load ends within the checked output.len()+filter.len()-1 samples… Pointer additions stay inside their borrowed slices") is still accurate, because it never relied on the input being scratch. No new unsafe, allocation, panic or unchecked indexing was added.

Bit-exactness, checked by a differential run. I ran a throwaway seeded test through the public API, development only, in linux/amd64 Docker with AVX2 detected at runtime. It covered 60,000 cases: 8 and 10 bits, luma and chroma, every width and height from 1 to 64 (1 to 32 for chroma), reference planes from 1 to 96 with strides of width+0..4 and tight final rows, origins up to 8 samples past the picture, and motion vectors that are small, random, or i16::MIN/i16::MAX. 2% of the cases planted an out-of-range sample. On each case the automatic and forced-scalar paths gave identical results and outputs, including the untouched padding. The hash over all results and outputs was identical at this head and at the base (f24b8302a56dd273). The counts were 59,967 Ok, 33 Error::Sample and 7,832 cases on the eight-bit interior borrow path. The crate's 49 lib tests pass on amd64 with native-hevc,test-support.

#516 compatibility. git merge-tree of this head with #516's head 9cf7ad4d8 is clean. After the merge, the borrow reads x_start from InterPrediction::support().start, the same value it computed before. Under #516's RefPlane::prefix, an unpublished row still fails the same checked row .get with Error::Buffer, on either path, before any SIMD call. I found no semantic clash.

Evidence. I recomputed the internal A/B from the raw per-call results. The medians give 1.06143× (c00) and 1.04100× (c01), with disjoint baseline and candidate ranges, and Main10 at 1.005× and 1.001×. Callgrind gives 4,101,323,638 → 3,971,223,305 Ir, which is 3.172%. The wrapper's self-Ir drop accounts for all but 2,054 of those instructions. These figures are not in the public text, which is correct.

Non-blocking:

  • The PR body's Evidence still says complete conformance at this head is pending. Refresh it once the full modes finish.
  • Optionally, the simd.rs unsafe-sites row could say that the horizontal input may be a borrowed sub-slice of a reference row. It is accurate as written.
