Avoid temporary reference-row copies during Main10 HEVC interpolation when the horizontal support is inside the coded picture.
Background
Eight-bit interpolation already borrows consecutive interior reference samples. Main10 still gathers the same samples through a clamped column map before running the same filters.
What changes
Covered: Main10 access to checked consecutive reference rows.
Not covered: new SIMD, filter arithmetic, edge replication, scheduling or memory accounting changes.
After merging: None.
Decisions
Use the existing checked row-borrow path for both supported depths. The source samples and their order do not depend on whether they were copied into scratch first.
Preserve Main10's horizontal and vertical shifts and validation before writes. Out-of-picture support still takes the existing boundary gather, and eight-bit input keeps its existing borrowed-row behavior.
Reuse the existing literal-equation and tight-extent regressions, which already cover both depths, scalar tails, padding, extreme motion and invalid support samples.
Evidence
Verification run: Linux x86-64 passes 49 automatic and 46 forced-scalar kernel tests and strict Clippy. Formatting and diff checks pass. Complete automatic and forced-scalar conformance are still running.
The shipping-code instruction comparison on AMD EPYC 7763 removed 8,286,784 instructions (2.4677%) for c02 and 8,358,412 (3.5790%) for c03, with eight pictures per input. Both exact arms match the qualified oracle and retain identical horizontal and vertical filter instruction counts. These instruction reductions are not timing gains.
The decoder-only wall-time reference compares baseline de671521dba442a5507287ea89b62cb861bb3f1a with candidate 76e8e2ea31df095bb0d30ee9264ff7bb7571eeb7, using release builds and qualified FFmpeg n9.0.2-17-g2a571b6068 with one decoder thread. All selected cells appear below. Each arm has one warmup followed by five rotated same-host calls on an AMD EPYC 9V74 shared Linux runner, compiled with Rust 1.99.1. Both decoder arms match the oracle's exact per-picture samples before timing, and every timed call checks its frame count and completed decode work.
Wall times are milliseconds, shown as median [minimum, maximum]. Throughput is baseline median / candidate median. The final column is candidate median wall time / FFmpeg median wall time, so values above one mean CoreAV is slower.

c02 has a 1.998% throughput gain with disjoint observed ranges. c03 has a 0.277% median increase but overlapping ranges, so it does not establish an improvement. The unchanged eight-bit controls have overlapping ranges and median throughput changes of -0.682% and -0.532%. This small shared-runner reference does not establish a general Main10 speedup or a win against FFmpeg. No cell was rerun to improve its result.

The interpolation path now uses consecutive source rows at either supported sample depth when horizontal support is within the reference width. Out-of-bounds support still uses edge-clamped gathering. The design documentation describes this behavior and the unchanged Main10 support checks.

interpolate uses consecutive source rows when horizontal support is within the reference width, regardless of supported sample depth. It retains edge-clamped gathering for out-of-bounds support. The documentation describes the path, Main10 checks, and decoder-arm comparisons.
Main10 now borrows interior reference rows. No actionable merge-blocking risk was identified.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/coreav-kernels-hevc/src/inter.rs: The consecutive source-row path no longer requires 8-bit depth; any depth uses it when the horizontal support lies within the reference width, while out-of-bounds support still uses edge-clamped gathering.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/design/hevc-reference-row-borrows.md: The title changes from “HEVC eight-bit reference-row borrows” to “HEVC reference-row borrows.”
observed — Modified behavior in docs/design/hevc-reference-row-borrows.md: The documented direct-borrow path now applies to either supported sample depth with interior horizontal support; the prior text limited it to eight-bit input and said ten-bit reconstruction retained gathering.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/design/hevc-reference-row-borrows.md: A new paragraph documents unchanged Main10 filter input, shifts, sample range and operation order, and states that the full clipped support is checked against the depth maximum before either path.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "perf(hevc): borrow Main10 reference rows" follows Conventional Commits and names the main change: Main10 HEVC interpolation now borrows consecutive reference rows instead of copying them. The raw summary says the consecutive source-row path is extended from 8-bit to all supported bit depths, and the design doc is retitled for borrows generally. The title is specific and matches the changeset, so it passes.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's main sections: TL;DR, Background, What changes, Decisions, and Evidence, plus the DCO and no-copying checkboxes. It explains the situation before the change, the scope and exclusions, the design choices, and the verification run with a commit hash. Its Mermaid scenario diagram is omitted, but the change stays inside one layer, so the template allows that. The Background section is short and gives no issue link beyond 'Refs #22', and the 'Needs the maintainer' section is correctly absent. The description is mostly complete and passes. Two small gaps: the 'What changes' section does not cover user-facing before/after output, and the template's title-length rule (50 characters or fewer for the summary) is not checked here.

Safety and bounds, re-checked for 10-bit
RefPlane::data is &[u16] at both depths, so the borrowed sub-slice source[x_start..x_start + source_width] is measured in samples, not bytes, exactly as the gather buffer scratch.source[..source_width] was. Avx2::horizontal receives a slice of the same length either way and still checks source.len() >= output.len() + filter.len() - 1 before horizontal_avx2; its widest load (x + tap, 8 × u16) ends at index lanes + filter.len() - 2, below that extent. The 8-bit gate was never a memory-safety precondition for the SIMD site.
consecutive still needs x_start >= 0 && x_start + source_width <= reference.width. Under it the depth-check range [left, right] is unclamped and equals [x_start, x_start + source_width - 1], for both fractional and integer phases. So every borrowed sample is checked against max_sample() (1023 at Main10) before any write. Padding beyond width is still never read.
Out-of-picture MVs, edge rows (row clamping is unchanged) and every case with x_start < 0 or past the right edge still take the clamped column-map gather.
The first_shift = 2 and shift > 2 guard are unchanged, and the AVX2 and scalar paths consume identical values in identical order, so the i32 range argument is unchanged.
The docs/unsafe-sites.md simd.rs row is depth-agnostic ("checked output.len()+filter.len()-1 samples", "depth-validated before output writes") and still describes the site accurately. No row needs an edit.
Differential (development only, linux/amd64 Docker under Rosetta, AVX2 detected)
A temporary test, not pushed, ran 40,000 random cases: 3/4 at 10-bit and 1/4 at 8-bit, luma and chroma, widths 1–48, heights 1–12, odd picture widths (37×29, stride 41), origins anywhere in the plane, MVs up to ±4000, and output strides with padding. It asserts automatic == forced-scalar, == the literal equation helper, and that output padding is untouched. 30,874 cases took the edge path and 9,126 the borrowed path. All passed with the default build and with --features scalar, alongside the existing inter tests (23 and 22 passed).
Non-blocking
In the existing automatic_and_scalar_match_all_widths_phases_and_tails, origin x=1 puts every fractional-x luma case on the edge path (x_start = -2). Borrowed 10-bit fractional luma is covered only by the other literal tests. A follow-up could add one interior origin.
Main10 conformance (automatic and forced-scalar) is still pending in CI. This verdict assumes it stays green.
