TL;DR

  • With --native-h264-encoder, a Matroska command whose frame rate the native cadence cannot represent (above 1,000 fps) now returns to the existing external command before any decoding or encoding, instead of after a full native encode.
  • Commands that run natively today, and every fallback output, keep their behaviour and bytes.

Tier: user-facing

Refs #25.

Background

#531 added native H.264 Matroska output. Its cadence value, which turns the admitted frame rate into the Matroska DefaultDuration, was only built after the native encode had finished. A source at 1,001 or 2,000 fps was therefore decoded and encoded in full, then refused, and the unchanged external command ran in the time that remained under the original deadline. That PR listed early cadence rejection as a follow-up.

What changes

What changes for users of the library or CLI? coreav --native-h264-encoder ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v libx264 out.mkv on a source above 1,000 fps reaches the external encoder at once. Its output, exit status and messages are unchanged; it only stops spending the shared deadline on a native encode that cannot be written.

  • Covered: the transcode pipeline's native H.264 Matroska path. The cadence is built from the admitted rate right after native timing admission, before the audio encode, the decoder and the encoder start, and the writer receives that same value.
  • Not covered: the writer's rounded timestamp collision check, which still runs after the encode because it reads the encoded presentation times; WebM, MP4 output, default and release builds, and the encoder library.

What must a person do after merging? None.

Decisions

  • Build the cadence once, where the rate is admitted, and hand the same value to the writer, instead of checking twice. The rate the writer used before was the same admitted rate, so supported commands write the same bytes.
  • Keep the collision check in the writer rather than predicting encoded timestamps ahead of the encode, which would duplicate the writer's rounding.

Evidence

Verification run

  • native_matroska_cadence_is_refused_before_the_decoder_opens builds a 16x16 H.264 MP4 at 1,001 fps and at 1,000 fps with a counting decoder backend. At 1,001 fps to Matroska it requires NativeIneligible and zero decoder opens. The 1,000 fps Matroska and 1,001 fps MP4 controls must reach the decoder. On the base pipeline the 1,001 fps case reaches the decoder, and the test fails.
  • cargo test -p coreav-transcode --features h264-native --lib: 90 passed. cargo clippy -p coreav-transcode --all-targets -- -D warnings with and without h264-native, and cargo fmt, are clean.
  • The native H.264 CLI job compares native MP4, native Matroska, default and external bytes with the base revision.
  • Similarity guard on 3adb1cd15ab7ac75ff8bc9d9ed32490f9c2b91d2 with the allowlist on the ops repository's main: 112 spans of 50+ tokens, 0 not allowlisted, 0 problems, 0 stale entries.

Build the native H.264 Matroska cadence from the admitted frame rate before the audio encode, decoder and encoder start, and give the writer that same value. A rate the cadence cannot represent now returns to the unchanged external command without a native encode first.

Walkthrough

For native H.264 Matroska output, the pipeline now validates cadence from the prepared stream before decoding and passes that cadence to the writer. Tests check that unsupported cadence prevents decoder opening, while supported cadence and MP4 output reach decoder opening.

Changes: Native Matroska cadence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pre-decode cadence validation and writer integration
crates/coreav-transcode/src/pipeline.rs, docs/design/cli-native-h264-matroska.md
The pipeline derives Matroska cadence from the prepared native H.264 frame rate before decoding and passes it to the writer. Tests check decoder opening for Matroska outputs at timescales 1001 and 1000, and for MP4 output at timescale 1001. The design document describes the validation timing and existing retry and error rules.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~15 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 3adb1

The unsupported Matroska cadence is rejected before decoding, while the supported and MP4 paths continue to the decoder. No merge-blocking issue was found.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 3adb1

Unsupported native Matroska rates are rejected earlier without adding permissions or a new external interface. The inspected paths preserve existing fallback and output protections, with no material security regression identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the inspected flow, caller-controlled media timing affects when an already-opted-in native H.264 Matroska attempt is refused. It does not gain a new execution route or authority; unsupported cadence reaches the existing external-command path sooner instead of consuming native processing time first.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The native CLI path retains its opt-in, command-shape, strict-safe and source-eligibility gates. The changed private pipeline prepares cadence only after native timing admission; the writer still validates the supplied value against its output contract.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cadence is a local value, not new shared mutable state. Early refusal occurs before pipeline spool creation and publication. Existing CLI output staging uses exclusive temporary-file creation and failure cleanup, while pipeline spools retain exclusive creation and Drop cleanup; the PR does not change those ownership controls.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(transcode): refuse native Matroska cadence before encoding" follows Conventional Commits and names the main change: a native Matroska cadence the encoder cannot represent is now refused before encoding starts. The raw summary, objectives, and description all describe this same change to the pipeline's native H.264 Matroska path. The title is 62 characters, which is within the 72-character limit set by the template, though it is above the 50-character target for the scope-and-summary part.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is thorough and follows the template structure: TL;DR with bullets, Background, What changes (user impact plus covered and not-covered areas), a Mermaid sequence diagram, Decisions, and Evidence with verification commands and checklist items. It explains the cause (cadence was built only after the native encode finished) and states the scope limits. Minor gaps: the template's 'What changes for users' asks for before/after output, which the author gave only in prose, and the 'What must a person do after merging?' item is answered 'None'. The 'Needs the maintainer' section was correctly omitted. The TL;DR includes a 'Tier: user-facing' line that is not in the template, but it does not block review.

Review: no blocking issue

Reviewed head 3adb1cd15ab7ac75ff8bc9d9ed32490f9c2b91d2.

The early check uses the same VideoCadence::new, stream index, and admitted frame rate as the removed post-encode check. The prepared rate flows unchanged into encoder settings and the former completed encoding rate; the checked value is now carried directly to the writer. This does not tighten native admission. In particular, native_timing still tries legacy_native_rate first: the restored zero/missing-duration 30 fps shapes remain admitted and pass the cadence constructor. MP4, external H.264, and non-native builds do not acquire this check; WebM's existing refusal and the writer's post-encode collision check remain intact.

The CLI retry classification, external arguments, and absolute deadline are unchanged. Rejection moves before audio encoding and decoder opening, leaving more of that same budget for the external retry. Non-blocking prose caveat: the PR's unconditional statement that exit status/messages are unchanged is stronger than the implementation guarantees. Avoiding a native timeout or decoder failure can now allow fallback to run and succeed; the preserved contract is the fallback invocation and original deadline, not identical outcomes under those failures.

All 90 feature-enabled transcode unit tests passed locally, including the new 1,001 fps early-refusal regression, the 1,000 fps/MP4 controls, and the legacy-clock tests. Current-head native-h264-cli CI was still pending when checked; its configured command runs this feature-enabled suite and the actual-base byte comparisons, so their Linux execution remains a merge gate rather than a local claim.

No CodeRabbit or Greptile inline findings were present when checked.
