Change

The shared clock now stops scheduling updates while the document is hidden and resumes when it becomes visible. Subscribers are cleaned up on unmount, and the current time is refreshed on return.

Tests

Focused clock tests passed (3 tests). Type checks and lint passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Time displays now stop refreshing while the page is hidden, avoiding unnecessary background updates.
    • When the page becomes visible again, the displayed time updates immediately and continues refreshing every 30 seconds.

Walkthrough

useNow pauses its 30-second update interval while the document is hidden. When the document becomes visible, it updates the time and restarts the interval. The test checks these updates and visibility-listener cleanup.

Changes: useNow visibility handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Visibility-aware clock subscription
resources/js/hooks/use-now.ts, tests/Unit/UseNowVisibility.test.tsx
The hook adds a shared tick and interval-start helper. It pauses updates while the document is hidden, updates and restarts when visible, and removes the visibility listener after the last subscriber unsubscribes. The test checks notification timing and listener registration and removal.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 7c7f2

The clock now pauses in hidden tabs, but its regression test is skipped by the unit-test command and misses initially hidden subscriptions. Address these coverage gaps before relying on the test.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7c7f2

The checked server controls remain independent of the browser clock, and no introduced security bypass was established. Risk remains low because downstream behavior and notification-time cleanup were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct behavioral scope is the shared clock within a browser document and its existing consumers. The inspected device and scheduling consumers use the timestamp for presentation rather than credential revocation or scheduled execution.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A hidden tab can retain stale poll-voting UI after expiration, but this does not establish an accepted expired vote. The unchanged server request checks commit visibility and poll eligibility, and poll closure is evaluated against server time.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The pastel button uses browser time to partition client allowance state, but its request carries no client day. The unchanged server path checks eligibility, computes remaining allowance under database locks, records the server date, and returns the authoritative day and remaining count. The model helper's complete quota calculation was not inspected.

Nitpick Cover the initial-hidden subscription path.

1-59: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover the initial-hidden subscription path.

The test does not detect an interval scheduled when the first subscriber mounts while the document is hidden. This branch is part of the new pause behavior. Change the fixture to start hidden, advance the fake clock, and assert that no notification occurs before visibility is restored.

Review comment at @tests/Unit/UseNowVisibility.test.tsx around lines 1 - 59:
Update the `useNow` visibility test to cover a subscription created while the
document is initially hidden: advance fake time and assert no notification, then
restore visibility and verify the clock refreshes. Adjust subsequent
notification counts and time expectations to preserve coverage of pausing again
while hidden and resuming afterward.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Include this test in the unit-test command.

test:unit selects tests/Unit/*.test.ts, so it skips UseNowVisibility.test.tsx. This test also imports vite-plus/test, whose documented runner is vp test, not Node’s test runner. Add a Vitest step for this file to the unit-test command. Renaming the file alone would not fix the runner mismatch. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
