Problem

A failed IndexedDB open promise remained cached, preventing later calls from retrying after a transient failure.

Change

Clears the cached open promise after transient failures so a later request can retry, while retaining persistent permission-denied failures and reusing successful connections.

Tests

The full JavaScript unit suite passed (226 tests). Focused tests cover concurrent opens, transient retries, permission failures, and successful connection reuse. Type checks and lint passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Image storage now recovers when a temporary database-opening failure occurs, allowing stored images to be accessed on a later attempt.
    • When browser security restrictions prevent storage from opening, the app avoids repeatedly requesting access.

Walkthrough

IndexedDB open failures now clear the cached promise for retry, except for SecurityError failures, which remain cached as null. Unit tests cover synchronous and asynchronous failures, retry recovery, and open-attempt counts.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 571b3

A transient storage failure followed by an image edit can erase previously saved draft images. Address this before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 571b3

The retry preserves permission-denied handling and does not introduce a new access boundary. However, after an initial storage failure, adding an attachment can replace previously saved draft images before they have been restored.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: If a draft already has persisted images and the initial open fails transiently, restoration returns an empty map and is not retried by the stash loader. Adding an image can then retry the connection and replace that draft's stored images without restoring or displaying the previous attachments. The base kept subsequent writes disabled after the failed open; the new retry behavior exposes this recovery-ordering gap.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated replacement path targets the active draft's browser-storage key, formed from user ID and draft name. It establishes local persisted-draft loss, not cross-user access or additional server-side authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Retry uses the same browser IndexedDB API and fixed database name and version as the original attempt. Both synchronous DOMException SecurityError and asynchronous request SecurityError retain the cached null result; no alternate storage authority or permission bypass is added.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Transaction-level completion handling does not coordinate restoration with replacement writes. The composer connects attachment changes directly to stash updates without a restoration guard, so successful write recovery can undermine preservation of data left unread by the earlier failure.

Explanation

The title "fix: retry IndexedDB after a failed connection attempt" matches the main change. The summary says open now clears the cached database promise after non-SecurityError failures so later calls can retry, while SecurityError failures keep the cached null result. The PR objectives describe the same fix for a cached IndexedDB open promise that blocked retries after transient failures. The title names the primary behavior change and uses the conventional fix: prefix.

Nitpick Add a sequential reuse assertion.

98-108: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a sequential reuse assertion.

The concurrent reads only prove that one pending open is shared. Add a later, nonconcurrent readStoredImages() call and assert that attempts remains 3. This protects successful connection reuse after the open promise settles.

Suggested fix
         assert.equal(attempts, 3);
         assert.equal(transactions, 2);
+        const reused = await readStoredImages();
+        assert.equal(reused.size, 0);
+        assert.equal(attempts, 3);
+        assert.equal(transactions, 3);

Add a sequential connection-reuse assertion after the concurrent reads in the
test using readStoredImages: call it again after the open promise has settled,
verify the result is empty, and confirm attempts remains 3. Assert the
transaction count reflects the additional read.

Defer image writes until restoration succeeds.

When the initial read fails transiently, readStoredImages() returns an empty map. A later updateImages() call can retry IndexedDB and replace the existing key through store.put. Track restoration failure separately from a valid empty result, retry restoration, and apply the edit only after the existing value has been loaded.

Review comment at @resources/js/lib/image-storage.ts around lines 30 - 34:
Update readStoredImages and the updateImages flow to distinguish a failed
initial restoration from a successfully restored empty map. Retry restoration
after transient failures and defer edits that would reach store.put until the
existing value has been loaded; preserve the behavior for valid empty results
and permission-denied connections.
