feat: try topics on the experimental links pages - #1513
An experiment on how to show topics, using links since the links pages are already a prototype. It has two pages: one to explore topics, and one for a single topic.
The goal is to try the design on real data. It stays out of the shared commit code on purpose, so this isn't the final structure.
Changes
List of links (/links): each link is a topic, drawn where a commit's author would be, with its title, its URL, its total stars and its commit count. Its 3 most starred commits of the last 6 hours nest under it, then its newest. Links with no stars in 6 hours fold into a quiet section.
A link's page (/links?url=…): a header like an organization's, with the page's title, URL, description and share image, above the usual CommitFeed, newest first.
Nested commits:LinkTopicCommits is a new component, so CommitCard and CommitReply are unchanged.
Queries:TopLinksQuery adds the star counts and the top commits, which LinkCommitsQuery ranks in a single query.
Limitations
Icons: they come from favicon.show until the app reads them itself. GitHub links show the owner's avatar instead.
Topic colour: it comes from a hash of the URL, not from the icon.
Duplication:LinkTopicCommits copies the structure of CommitReply, so it won't follow changes to it. To be sorted out if the design stays.
Deleting: your own commit can't be deleted from the list, only from its page.
Before the graph draws: the dashed lines only appear once the graph canvas has drawn, as the shared fallback lines aren't exported.
Testing
LinkControllerTest covers the ranking, the star counts, the order of the topics and hidden commits. Tried locally on made-up commits about real links, in light and dark, on desktop and mobile.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Redesigned the links overview with search, graph-style topic listings, and a quieter section for links without recent activity.
Link topics show recent and total star counts, popular commits, and previews, with ranking informed by recent stars. Individual link pages display available metadata and previews alongside a commit feed.
Bug Fixes
Link commits now appear newest first, and commits the viewer cannot access are excluded from topic previews.
The links page lists links as topics, each with its 3 most starred commits of the last 6 hours nested under it. A link's own page gets a header like an organization's, above a feed like the log.
Everything stays in the links pages: the commits nested under a link have their own component rather than changing the shared commit or reply ones. The icons come from favicon.show for now.
The link overview now ranks links by recent stars and shows top commits in graph-based topics. Link detail pages display topic metadata, previews, counts, and newest-first commits.

Link ranking and commit data app/Queries/LinkCommitsQuery.php, app/Queries/TopLinksQuery.php, app/Http/Controllers/LinkController.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/LinkControllerTest.php
The queries provide six-hour and total star counts, viewer-visible commit counts, and up to three ranked commits per link. Commits are ordered newest first. Tests cover counts, ordering, ranking, and visibility.
Graph-based link overview resources/js/pages/links/index.tsx, resources/js/components/link-topic-commits.tsx
The overview separates active and quiet links. Active topics display top commits and a link to additional commits. Quiet topics display link details and the latest available non-deleted commit.
Link detail page resources/js/pages/links/index.tsx
The detail view displays topic metadata, available previews, commit and people counts, and the commit feed or its empty state.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d0ff0
The link topic overview and detail pages change ranking and presentation. No concrete merge-blocking issue was established, and the controller tests cover ranking, counts and visibility.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to d0ff0
The topic pages introduce an external icon service that can receive topic hostnames and readers’ network metadata. Existing sign-in and commit-visibility controls remain in place. The identified exposure is browser-side and does not grant additional server privileges.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: Topic icons introduce automatic browser requests to favicon.show containing the topic hostname, including on detail pages without a stored preview. Unlike the base overview, viewing topics now exposes reader network metadata to this additional service. The no-referrer policy limits disclosure but does not remove this new privacy boundary.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified privacy exposure affects authenticated readers whose browsers load topic icons. Overview exposure follows the selected topics, while a detail URL can trigger a favicon request even without a stored preview. The hostname, rather than the full topic path or query, is included in the favicon-service URL.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A topic hostname flows into a favicon.show image URL and is loaded without an explicit external-navigation action. This gives the service a topic-hostname request associated with the reader’s network metadata. The code establishes the disclosure path, not malicious behavior by that service or disclosure of application credentials.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — New image elements use no-referrer, and outbound anchors retain noopener and noreferrer. The inspected HTTP preview provider restricts metadata image URLs to HTTPS. These controls limit referrer, opener and transport exposure, but do not prevent direct connections to external image hosts. Existing detail previews already supported remote images.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If automatic disclosure to an icon service is outside the intended privacy policy, use locally served placeholder icons or explicit opt-in for remote icons. Any future server-side icon retrieval should preserve outbound-fetch restrictions rather than accepting arbitrary destinations.

- Line 264: Use an all-time count of commits visible to the current viewer for
the topic display and “Show all” decision, replacing the use of link.commits for
those purposes; LinkCommitsQuery::stats alone does not provide viewer
visibility, so derive or reuse a count that applies the same visibility rules as
the nested commits and link feed. Keep the 30-day count for ranking.

Include the newest commit when it falls outside the top three
If three older commits have recent stars and the newest has none, the overview omits the newest commit. Append the newest visible commit when it is not already in the ranked results.

Do not send invalid links to favicon.show
If a link cannot be parsed, hostname returns the full link. A direct /links request with a malformed link can therefore send its path and query to favicon.show. Return no icon for invalid links instead.

Update siteFavicon to return no icon when the URL is invalid, rather than
passing the unparsed link—including its path or query—to favicon.show. For valid
URLs, continue building the favicon URL from the parsed hostname and preserve
the existing www handling; ensure linkTopic accommodates the nullable icon
result.
