DEV3 AI Accessibility Checker & Fixer for WordPress

Scan your site for WCAG 2.2 AA issues, review drafted fixes (alt text, contrast, headings, link text, form labels) and generate an honest accessibility statement.

Dashboard with the automated score, severity counts, top problems and manual checks

Features

DEV3 AI Accessibility Checker & Fixer finds accessibility barriers in your WordPress site and helps you fix them in the content itself. It is not an overlay: there is no toolbar widget and no promise of instant compliance. Automated checks find only part of the barriers, so every score is labelled "automated checks only" and comes with a list of things to check by hand.

Scan

  • Background site scan: each published page is loaded like a visitor sees it and the post content is checked block by block.
  • 23 rules mapped to WCAG 2.2 (A/AA) success criteria: missing or file-name alt text, empty links and buttons, unlabeled form fields, ambiguous link text, skipped heading levels, low colour contrast (inline styles, block colours, theme palette), untitled iframes, data tables without headers, autoplaying audio, page language, page title, zoom blocking, bypass blocks and more.
  • Every issue says where it comes from: post content (fixable here), a dynamic block/shortcode, or the theme/plugins (guidance only).
  • Scheduled scans (daily/weekly), rescan on publish, per-page rescans, scan history with a score trend.

Fix (drafts first, always undoable)

  • Alt text: describe with DEV3 AI (vision), use the media title, or mark decorative. Optionally saves to the media library too.
  • Contrast: nearest passing text colour or nearest passing theme palette colour, with live before/after preview.
  • Heading order: repairs the outline of the whole post.
  • Link text: rewrite "click here / read more" with DEV3 AI or from the target page title.
  • Accessible names: labels for form fields, names for icon buttons and links, titles for iframes.
  • Fixes edit only the target markup and keep blocks valid. Every applied fix stores a before/after copy; undo restores it exactly (and warns if the post changed since).

Block editor sidebar

Live checks of unsaved content, heading outline, click to select the block, apply fixes as normal undoable block changes, and a pre-publish reminder.

Also included

  • Media library alt-text audit with a bulk DEV3 AI drafting job.
  • Accessibility statement generator (W3C structure) that never claims full compliance unless you confirm a manual audit; saves a draft page and offers the [dev3ax_statement] shortcode.
  • Optional front-end helpers: skip link, visible focus outline, underlined content links, "opens in a new tab" hints. Visitors see no branding.
  • "Explain with DEV3 AI" gives tailored fix steps for any issue.

AI and privacy

AI features use Google AI with your own API key, which stays on your server. Only what a feature needs is sent (the image and nearby text for alt text, the link sentence for link text). Scans never send page content to Google. A monthly budget cap, an AI on/off switch and a usage log are included. Everything except the AI suggestions works without a key.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0 or newer (tested up to 6.8)
  • PHP 7.4 or newer
  • Optional: your own Google AI API key (from Google AI Studio) to switch on the DEV3 AI features. The rest of the plugin works without one.

FAQ

Does this make my site WCAG compliant?

No tool can. The plugin finds and fixes many common automated failures and guides you on the rest. Use the manual checklist on the dashboard and test with a keyboard and a screen reader.

Why are some pages checked from saved content only?

The scanner loads pages through your own server. If a firewall, Basic auth or a local setup blocks that, the post content is still checked; theme markup is not. Hosts can add credentials with the dev3ax_scan_request_args filter.

Can it change my theme?

No. Theme and plugin markup gets guidance (and DEV3 AI explanations). Images printed by the theme can be fixed through their media library alt text.
