Cached validation definitions can reject valid updated workloads, and supplied definitions do not always guide placeholder types. Contributors are also blocked from regenerating maintained artifacts with the required Go version, while repeated large CI downloads delay feedback.
What
Adds a deliberate refresh that preserves existing cached definitions when fetching or validation fails, and uses supplied definitions consistently. Updates generation and lifecycle-test cleanup so contributors get reliable checks (#7998, #8001). In a local comparison, compression reduced the prepared CI download from 521 MB to 246 MB without changing its bytes; the native system-test matrix has exercised the restored binary (#8018).
Implementation and local verification at 9ae6791f8ca3539b9a2a549fce2f24716c0b5167:
Completes the remaining refresh and supplied-schema typing slices of Refresh cached validation schemas when upstream definitions change #7925. Explicit refresh owns one private cache for the complete validation, promotes downloaded entries only after successful validation, and removes its temporary cache on success or failure. Normal validation retains its existing cache policy.
Also repairs the reproduced generator blocker in Restore complete artifact generation on Go 1.27 #7998: both setup pins and contributor instructions use released Mockery v3.8.1. Generated mocks come from that tool, without hand editing.
Deterministic regressions cover stale parsed schemas and cached misses, local directories and remote templates/directories across all three validation paths, and refresh across loose, parallel, Kustomize and rendered inputs. Five parallel files make one successful fixture-schema download. Invalid enums/types, unavailable refresh, unexpected cache entries, cleanup and byte preservation remain checked.
The complete Go suite passes. The configured Go linter v2.14.0 reports zero findings in affected packages. Two final complete generation runs produce identical source digests; documentation builds successfully.
The actual compiled CLI accepts the current public Flux postRenderStrategy field, rejects its invalid enum, preserves cached bytes after a failed refresh, leaves no refresh temporary directories, and validates a cached built-in Namespace with network transport blocked.
Local actionlint v1.7.12 reports the same existing code-quality permission-scope parser error on unchanged main and this branch. This is not recorded as a clean full workflow-validation result; native configured workflow checks remain required.
Native CI and a substantive current-head review are pending. This remains a draft.
CI repair at a0e9135 addresses #8001. The previous head failed the native release-configuration job during temporary-directory cleanup; its ownership assertions passed. An earlier accepted background delete could outlive its HOME fixture, and the progress-condition test also returned before its gated create finished. Both tests now observe completion before cleanup. The production asynchronous API and ownership checks are unchanged.
Validation: the original focused pair passed 1,000 local repetitions, so the timing-dependent native failure was not reproduced locally. After repair, all three affected tests passed 1,000 repetitions each; the full lifecycle package passed ten shuffled runs (36.8 seconds), and canonical golangci-lint 2.14.0 reports no findings. Native CI is rerunning at the new head; review and merge remain gated on its complete result.
At prior head a0e91351bb5b3ec3f24f22b32795dc88225ad893, native CI's K3s and Vanilla Calico-migration legs failed while downloading the exact producer mirror artifact, before any migration assertion ran. Job 121719116650 and job 121719116526 report that the artifact action exhausted five retries. Other legs successfully downloaded the same 2,851,289,961-byte artifact and verified its expected digest. The underlying transport fault is not identified beyond that evidence.
I attempted one scoped unchanged-job retry; GitHub refused because the containing run was still running. No retry was started. That attempt has now settled, and main advanced by two protected dependency updates. Current signed head dfacce04445b3a8cff53f08a77606bf3f3bba7a2 incorporates fresh main 1ca3e3ce0462dfcb1c2b1dd311a4169026ec37c6 and the independently measured binary-compression improvement tracked by #8018. Full native acceptance runs again at this head; the stale-head retry plan is superseded.
The binary change preserves the producer checksum and exact consumer verification. It does not establish a fix for the separate mirror-download failures. No checks, integrity controls or timeouts are changed, and the original failed attempt remains part of the timing record. Review has not been requested while current native validation is pending.
The separate transfer measurements are recorded on devantler-tech/.github#654. They do not establish that the 15-minute feedback target is met.
Signed correction 28d77df3c423578c56d737bffe15778b1e550041, integrated with current main at f5185d22efd9ea3178dd881f6d2acd5ec1e0277a, fixes a reproduced interaction between explicit schema refresh and CRD discovery. A valid custom resource failed before its raw or chart-supplied schema was available. Discovery now preserves unresolved custom-resource substitutions until the same render supplies its schemas. Final refresh remains strict for every generated resource, and Helm output never receives a second Flux substitution pass. The existing single-render snapshot and attribution are retained.
The permanent command-level regression has eleven isolated loopback-TLS cases. All pass with the repair; a read-only overlay of the prior implementation fails the raw/rendered literal and typed cases and incorrectly accepts the missing-schema Helm output. Invalid custom resources, missing selected schemas even with ignore-missing enabled, and literal placeholders emitted by Helm remain rejected.
Validation: all three affected packages passed, the full Go suite and complete CLI build passed before the dependency-only main integration, canonical golangci-lint 2.14 reports zero issues, and the final-base discovery/concurrent-render race suite passed. A first race build was interrupted solely to reduce local build contention; that interrupted attempt is not a pass. The full Go suite subsequently passed on that base. Current-head native CI and independent review remain required; this PR stays draft.
Native validation and current-base checkpoint — 26 October
The complete first-attempt native CI run 40392461427 passed at f5185d22efd9ea3178dd881f6d2acd5ec1e0277a: 68 unique jobs, 64 successful and four expected skips. Every system-test leg passed. Its 6,411-second end-to-end duration remains an adverse CI-performance observation; this is not a claim that the portfolio fifteen-minute outcome is met.
Four dependency updates landed on main during validation. Signed merge dcaf61391f9183193f06e77bb8cda051e2220dce now integrates main c419e9d71a002ed8c980444044f72eaf04f12ce7, retaining the schema correction and all tests. The integration changes only the already-reviewed action pins, their matching harness expectations and the Flux kustomize-controller image patch. The complete first-attempt native CI run 40408331881 has now passed at this exact head: 68 unique jobs, 64 successful and four expected skips. All 30 Docker system-test jobs passed. The complete current-head check rollup is settled with 89 successes and seven expected skips, including the separate shared Go, security and managed checks. This run took 3,442 seconds (57m22s), so the portfolio fifteen-minute outcome remains unmet; differences between whole runs are not attributed to binary compression. Independent review is still required, and the PR stays draft. No additional local builds or tests were started after the host disk preflight imposed its run-level hold.

Workload validation adds --refresh-schemas, which fetches selected schemas into a temporary cache and commits them to the persistent cache after successful validation. Flux placeholders can use built-in, supplied, cached, and CRD catalogue schemas. CRD discovery supports raw and rendered workloads. Tests cover refresh behavior, schema typing, and CRD-derived schemas. The changes also update Mockery and generated mocks, adjust asynchronous test cleanup, and set CI artifact compression to level 1.
No actionable defect is established in this review. Complete the draft PR’s pending native checks before promotion.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
All four linked issues are direct, active targets with coding requirements. This assessment used the supplied whole-PR summary (merge base 00da4db to head 7f6b7cd). No repository inspection was performed, and tests were not run. The author-reported runs are not independently verified.
[#7925] Refresh path: validate.go adds --refresh-schemas. validate_schema_refresh.go runs refresh through SchemaRefresh (schema_refresh.go), which stages entries in a private temporary cache. Entries are committed only after validation succeeds. A failed refresh keeps the existing cache bytes and removes the temporary cache. TestValidateRefreshSchemas warms a stale schema, changes the fixture, confirms that ordinary validation rejects it, and confirms that refresh accepts the update. It also checks that an invalid enum value still fails, that refreshed entries work offline, and that unavailable refreshes preserve cached bytes. Typed substitution uses supplied local and remote schemas (fluxsubst/schema_locations.go; TestValidateSuppliedSchemaTypes; TestExpandFluxSubstitutionsReadsCurrentCache). The workload-validate documentation pages describe refresh and cache preservation. Cache reuse and cold-cache failure coverage were confirmed in the previous assessment. The current summary does not contradict that finding.
[#7998] Generator version: copilot-setup-steps.yml and ci.yaml install Mockery v3.8.1. CONTRIBUTING.md requires v3.8.1 and gives the install command. Mock files under pkg/**/mocks.go are regenerated. The author reports two complete make generate runs with identical source digests. The summary states that generation-drift and native CI checks are retained.
[#8001] local_service_test.go: TestProvisioningSurfacesProgressCondition waits for the cluster to reach Ready before its fixture ends. The EKS delete test for a target outside the selected region waits for the accepted asynchronous delete to return not found. Production APIs and ownership checks are unchanged. No retries or skipped tests are added. The named ownership test has no file change in the summary. The issue attributes its cleanup failure to other goroutines that wrote state during removal, and the two changed tests address that path. The author reports 1,000 repetitions of each affected test and ten shuffled package runs. Native CI at the delivered head is a validation outcome, not a coding requirement.
[#8018] ci.yaml: the binary artifact upload changes from compression level 0 to level 1. The summary reports no other change in the artifact path. Artifact identity, checksum, retention, cache-input key, and consumer verification are unchanged. Native producer and consumer proof, current-head review, and protected merge are process steps.
No unmet coding requirement appears in the supplied evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every change group in the supplied whole-PR summary maps to a linked issue:
[#7925]: validate.go, validate_schema_refresh.go, validate_schema_discovery.go, render.go, kubeconform client and schema-refresh files, fluxsubst schema lookup, the workload-validate documentation pages, and related tests. The kubeconform cache-directory selection change, the rename of runValidateCmd to runValidateCmdWithSchemaCache, and the export_test.go shims support the refresh and substitution paths.
[#7998]: version pins in copilot-setup-steps.yml, ci.yaml, and CONTRIBUTING.md. The mock files under pkg/**/mocks.go changed in the summary (Helper() calls, interface{} to any parameter types, and renamed Return parameters) are Mockery v3.8.1 generator output.
[#8001]: the two lifecycle test changes in local_service_test.go.
[#8018]: the single compression-level change in ci.yaml.
The summary does not show any change without a connection to a linked issue. Excluded files (pkg/cli/cmd/workload/snapshots/workload_test.snap, pkg/toolgen/snapshots/toolsurface_snapshot_test.snap, and pkg/svc/chat/docs_generated.go) were not inspected. No linked coding requirement depends on them, so this result does not rely on their contents.

Review follow-up for signed candidate 807b53f8c73b6235d819d40f98fca2bf89494382:
Deferred source documents without Flux placeholders now retain their bytes and skip repeated per-document substitution preparation. The final whole-render strict schema prefetch remains in place, and Helm-generated documents retain their separate handling.
The fixture uses t.Context(). The reported authored string literals and declarations now fit the repository's 100-column rule; generated files were preserved.
The signed integration also includes main's Helm-controller 1.7.1 patch after review of its upstream release notes. Fresh native CI is running at this new head. The earlier 68-job pass and completed CodeRabbit review bind to the previous head. The PR stays draft; the review threads remain open pending current-head validation and a new review.

Source excerpt: **Generated — never hand-edit; run the generator:** `make generate` regenerates everything in dependency order and is THE regeneration command.
Signed repair 5f71d0a9b7424e33fe0abc093c70ce8bd5209349 separates cache selection from an explicit schema-refresh session at both preparation stages. The new behavioral regression failed at both stages before the fix and passes all six default-cache, isolated-cache and explicit-refresh cases afterward. All tests in the three affected packages pass; the CLI builds and opens validation help, and canonical lint reports no findings. Generated files are unchanged.
For the completed previous head807b53f8c73b6235d819d40f98fca2bf89494382, native CI 40419155529 passed all 68 jobs: 64 successful and four skipped, including all 30 Docker system-test cases. One Docker Hub login timeout occurred before its system test started; one targeted job retry passed. The separate Go validation run passed all 12 jobs, including the affected lifecycle package. The binary producer uploaded a 244,399,396-byte artifact in eight seconds; all 30 system cases restored it successfully in 5–19 seconds (median 8.5 seconds). These are bounded transfer measurements, not proof of the portfolio's overall 15-minute CI target.
Fresh native CI 40430998524 and Go validation 40430998157 are running for the new signed repair. The prior pass and review do not transfer to this head. The new review thread remains open pending native validation; current-head review, protected merge and release verification remain required.

Current-head native evidence for #8018, run 40440704427: producer 121980236729 uploaded the 244,403,915-byte binary archive in 8 seconds. Native artifact 12706790869 is bound to this head and run, with archive digest sha256:acd8fe5724b059955152406afb8de4d075a734c4c43b6bea2ea6b6aef479af6e.
All 30 Docker test legs completed the existing checksum-bound binary restore successfully: 5–11 seconds, median 7 seconds. The sample consumer exercised the pinned restoration action and the producer’s exact artifact/checksum outputs. These are artifact-transfer measurements; preparation/build time and cluster execution are separate. The full workflow still had system tests running at the last observation, and this is not a claim that whole-PR feedback meets 15 minutes.
Ready for promotion at this exact signed head and current base 00da4dba076374a13a6f3c6e299f5be01ee9db83. Native CI passed all 68 jobs (64 successful, four expected skips), including every Docker system-test case. The separate Go validation passed all 12 jobs. Required readable gates pass; the configured code-quality rule has no readable analysis verdict, and GitHub reports CLEAN.
The current-head CodeRabbit review, completed at 03:58 UTC after the authenticated request, reports no actionable comments. Its exact-head summary passes the verdict classifier; all thread, body and explicit ancillary findings are resolved, with no current human review request or competing holder.
User evaluation includes the compiled validation command accepting refreshed public definitions and rejecting invalid enums, retaining cached bytes after failed refresh, removing temporary refresh state, and validating a cached built-in resource with transport blocked. Current native command regressions retain supplied-schema typing, strict refresh and isolated-cache behavior. The native producer and all 30 real Docker consumers also exercised the exact checksum-bound compressed binary. This delivers #7925, #7998, #8001 and #8018; it does not establish complete offline CRD operation (#7999) or the separate fifteen-minute whole-PR target. Protected merge and publication verification are next.
