Password entry is not focused by default #907

Closed

Description

@ryonakano

What Happened?

Password entry is not focused by default when Greeter appears on OS 9 Daily, although the intended code exists:

var focus_controller = new Gtk.EventControllerFocus ();
focus_controller.enter.connect (() => {
if (focus_controller.is_focus) {
password_entry.grab_focus_without_selecting ();
}
});
add_controller (focus_controller);

You need to manually focus on it to start typing your password.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Boot OS 9 Daily
  2. See the password entry is not focused by default when Greeter appears

Expected Behavior

Password entry should be focused by default.

    I found two causes:

    1. Gala does not give keyboard focus to the greeter window. Mutter does not focus desktop windows when they map. Fix: ShellClientsManager: Focus the greeter window when it is shown gala#2937
    2. In GTK 4, grab_focus () on a card does nothing, because the card is not focusable. Fix: BaseCard: Move focus to the first focusable child on grab_focus #912

    Both fixes are necessary. I tested them together on Fedora 44 (gala 8.6.1, GTK 4.22.5, Wayland). The password entry has focus when the greeter shows.
