Summary

indexer.onBlock (EVM, Fuel) and indexer.onSlot (SVM) accept fields: { block: [...] }. A handler that selects fields beyond the block key gets them on block, fully typed:

indexer.onBlock(
  { name: "headers", where: () => ({ block: { number: { _gte: 10, _every: 2 } } }), fields: { block: ["timestamp", "miner"] } },
  async ({ block }) => { block.timestamp; block.miner; },
);

Design: the block table as a source selection

  • A partition's FetchState.selection lists registrations per table: onEventRegistrations (logs) and onBlockRegistrations (blocks). A future table, such as transactions, becomes another list rather than a new kind of source.
  • Block handlers that select fields (blockFieldMask: Some, BlockItem.isFetched) are fetched in their own address-free partition. Sharing the wildcard partition would force include_all_blocks on every log query and cut RPC log pages down to the handler-block budget.
  • Field-less block handlers are still generated locally, block by block, by FetchState.appendOnBlockItems.
  • Rust routing. packages/cli/src/block_selection.rs decides once which handler runs on which block, for all four native clients (EVM HyperSync, EVM RPC, SVM HyperSync, Fuel HyperSync):
    • Block registrations are passed when a client is created.
    • select keeps only the handlers that run in the query's range.
    • route emits a BlockItem per handler per block.
    • range_end caps an RPC page at 100 handler blocks.
  • How each client fetches blocks. The HyperSync clients set include_all_blocks when the selection is non-empty. EVM and Fuel reject a page that is missing a handler block. SVM runs only on slots that produced a block. RPC reads each handler block, widened by the handler's field mask.
  • Delivering blocks to handlers. Blocks land in the per-chain block store and are written onto Internal.Block items at batch prep, the same way event blocks are.
  • Testing:
    • Simulate supports standalone { block: {...} } items.
    • Event blocks feed block handlers on the same block.
    • Auto-exit in process() counts only event items.

Breaking/internal changes

  • The napi get_items query carries on_event_registration_indexes and on_block_registration_indexes, and the response returns event_items and block_items.
  • Ecosystem.t drops the unused blockNumberName/blockHashName and gains blockFields, blockKeyField and blockFieldMask.
  • The duplicate SVM client constructor is removed.

Verification

  • New user-API and contract tests:
    • OnBlockFieldSelection, OnSlotFieldSelection, FuelOnBlockFieldSelection: types plus runtime behaviour through createTestIndexer.
    • OnBlockSourceContract: the HyperSync query shape, routing, rejection of a missing block, and the RPC block reads, against mock servers.
    • OnBlockPartition: a wildcard log fetch is not split into handler-sized pages (end to end over RPC).
    • OnBlockAutoExit: auto-exit runs to the first event block.
    • FetchState_test: client-filter collapse leaves the block partition intact.
  • Rust: unit tests in block_selection.rs and updated client tests. cargo test --lib gives 1040 passing; clippy and fmt are clean.
  • envio-tests: 874 tests across the affected suites, plus pnpm lint.
  • Scenario type-checks: tsc passes for svm_test, test_codegen and fuel_test.
  • Live check: HyperSync answers an empty-selection query, which is what an ended block partition sends.

Known trade-offs

  • A block partition whose handlers have all passed _lte keeps sending cheap empty queries, so its frontier follows the head.
  • An SVM onSlot with fields runs only on slots that have a block. This is documented.
  • Fetched block pages have no block-count cap, since itemsTarget counts handler runs, not blocks.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • EVM, Fuel, and SVM block handlers can select additional block fields, with handler arguments typed to reflect the selected fields.
    • Block handlers are supported across RPC, HyperSync, and simulated data sources, alongside event handlers.
    • Test-indexer simulations can include standalone block data.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Auto-exit now stops at the first block containing events, rather than a block-only result.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance and examples for selecting block fields, including ecosystem-specific behavior.

A block handler can now name the block fields it reads with the same
`fields` option onEvent takes. Selecting any field beyond the block's key
turns the registration into a selection on the block table: it joins the
address-free partition, sources return Block items for it alongside event
items, and its blocks are materialised from the block store like an event's.
Handlers that select nothing keep being generated locally.

- FetchState.selection carries onBlockRegistrations next to
  onEventRegistrations.
- block_selection.rs routes blocks to handlers once for every source.
- EVM HyperSync asks for every block of the range; RPC reads the handler
blocks, at most 100 per page.
- createTestIndexer simulates block headers with `{ block: {...} }` items.
- getEventItems/EventItemsQuery are renamed getItems/ItemsQuery, with
  eventItems/blockItems in the response.

The block table selection reaches the other ecosystems' sources:

- SVM asks for every slot's block and routes the ones returned, so a slot
handler selecting fields runs only on slots that produced a block. It
  gets `block` beside `slot`.
- Fuel asks for every block and checks the page covers each block a
handler runs on, like EVM HyperSync.
- createTestIndexer simulates SVM slot blocks and Fuel blocks with
  `{ block: {...} }` items.
- Fuel and SVM clients are renamed getItems/ItemsQuery to match EVM, and
  Fuel reuses HyperSync's missing-fields parsing.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KN2w22m7kaqG5v19xmsCms
Sources get block registrations at construction and select only the
handlers that run in the fetched range: a blocks-only query is trimmed
to the span of handler blocks, and a range without handler blocks asks
for none. SVM handlers selecting only the slot get no block argument,
and simulated event blocks feed block handlers on the same block.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KN2w22m7kaqG5v19xmsCms
A block handler selecting fields gets its blocks from the source along
with events, but only an event block ends a run without an endBlock.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KN2w22m7kaqG5v19xmsCms
Sharing the wildcard partition forced every log query to return all
blocks and held RPC log pages to the blocks a handler could afford to
read. A query now covers its whole range rather than trimming to the
handlers' span, which made a complete page look partial. The simulated
source checks a handler runs before building a block, and the runs-on
check is shared.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01KN2w22m7kaqG5v19xmsCms
Routing returns every handler block of the covered range, leaving each
source to check presence its own way. A negative to_block is rejected
again instead of meaning unbounded. Range narrowing touches event
registrations only, and the SVM client keeps a single constructor.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds selectable block fields to EVM, Fuel, and SVM block handlers. RPC, HyperSync, and simulation sources now return block items alongside event items, and the processing pipeline passes selected block data to handlers.

Changes: Block handler selection and processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registration and field-selection contracts
packages/envio/index.d.ts, packages/envio/src/EventConfigBuilder.res, packages/envio/src/HandlerRegister.res, packages/envio/src/Ecosystem.res, packages/envio/src/sources/BlockItem.res, packages/cli/src/block_selection.rs, packages/cli/templates/static/shared/.claude/skills/indexer-blocks/SKILL.md
Block handler options accept field selections, and handler types expose selected fields. Registrations now carry field masks and share block-key metadata across ecosystems.
Fetch partitions and block materialization
packages/envio/src/FetchState.res, packages/envio/src/ChainState.res, packages/envio/src/ChainFetching.res, packages/envio/src/EventProcessing.res, packages/envio/src/sources/SimulateSource.res, packages/envio/src/SimulateItems.res
Fetch selections include block registrations. The pipeline routes block items, materializes selected fields, and passes block data to handlers. Simulation inputs can include standalone blocks and expose block lookups.
EVM RPC block reads
packages/cli/src/evm_rpc_source/*, packages/envio/src/sources/EvmRpcClient.res, packages/envio/src/sources/RpcSource.res
RPC pages select block registrations, read the required block fields, and return event and block items separately.
EVM HyperSync item queries
packages/cli/src/evm_hypersync_source/*, packages/envio/src/sources/HyperSync*, packages/envio/src/sources/EvmHyperSyncSource.res
The EVM HyperSync query accepts separate event and block registration indexes. It requests required block data and returns separate event and block item collections.
Fuel and SVM HyperSync item queries
packages/cli/src/fuel_hypersync_source/*, packages/cli/src/svm_hypersync_source/*, packages/envio/src/sources/FuelHyperSync*, packages/envio/src/sources/SvmHyperSync*
Fuel and SVM HyperSync clients accept block registrations and return block items with event items. The SVM query also maps selected block fields to query columns.
Source and API validation
packages/envio-tests/test/OnBlock*, packages/envio-tests/test/OnSlotFieldSelection_test.res, packages/envio-tests/test/FuelOnBlockFieldSelection_test.res, packages/envio-tests/test/*HyperSync*_test.res, packages/envio-tests/test/lib_tests/*
Tests cover selected-field typing, source query selection, block routing, simulation inputs, client filtering, and updated item APIs.

Advance currentBlock after a standalone block.

If a standalone block specifies number 100, a following event without a block still uses the previous currentBlock. The event lands at the wrong block, while the block handler reads the standalone block at 100. Set currentBlock to blockNumber after accepting the standalone block.

Keep the SVM block slot consistent with the instruction slot.

If an instruction supplies slot: 5 and block.slot: 6, this code stores a block whose slot is 6 under key 5. A field-selecting onSlot handler for slot 5 then receives inconsistent block data. Reject conflicting values or set the parsed block’s slot to the resolved instruction slot.

EventFilters_test.res was replaced on main by the served-chain onEvent
where tests, so it stays deleted. The new block field selection types are
added to ENVIO_TYPE_EXPORTS, which main now checks against index.d.ts.

Do not treat optional field selections as guaranteed fields.

A value typed as { block?: readonly ["hash"] } can contain no block property. ListedFields removes undefined and still reports "hash" as selected. Consequently, indexer.onSlot({ name: "x", fields: maybeFields }, handler) types handler as receiving a required block.hash even when maybeFields is {}. The registration then has no block mask, so the handler can fail when it reads block.hash. Require a present selection before exposing its fields, or reflect the optional selection in the handler type.

Correct the slot-only selection description.

When fields.block contains only "slot", registration removes the key field and generates items locally. The handler therefore still runs on skipped slots. Replace “selecting any” with “selecting a field other than slot” so the documented execution rule matches the registration rule.
